UGA's win over Auburn is good now...bad in the long run.

A 7 or 8 win season is probably enough for Richt to keep status quo, which is the worst thing for our team. We need wholesale changes in coaching. The play calls on critical plays was terrible AGAIN. And our defense was caught out of position and run over AGAIN.  Joe Cox was TERRIBLE at quarterback. Half of this game I was ashamed and appalled.

It all falls back on the coaches. Our players are as talented as any team. Missed blocks, missed tackles, blown coverages, not "staying home on defense" , are all a product of poor coaching. And they HAVE to realize that you need

a quarterback that is big to play at this level. Our great QB's were 6'5 --240lbs. (Green, Stafford) Cox looked like a scared little kid in the pocket. I could go on and on, but I hate the fact that everyone in the athletic dept. is saying "oh well" and not doing anything about it. We will never beat the good teams playing like this.

(VERY FRUSTRATED)

A win over Auburn is NEVER a bad thing

Never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever. Ever, ever, ever. Ever.

That is all.

Driving the "Fire Willie Martinez" bandwagon since 2006

Agreed wholeheartedly

I’m proud of the results of the Bulldogs’ defensive performance in the second half, but the usual problem of letting the receiver catch the ball behind the linebackers and in front of the safeties was evident, as always. The fact that the Red and Black scored 31 offensive points and made a key stop late while inspired by Bacarri Rambo doesn’t change the reality . . . and, frankly, we all know any goodwill Willie Martinez earned last night is going to be obliterated at historic Grant Field two weeks from now.

Also, there were plenty of recruits in the house last night. I’m guessing they came away impressed at the atmosphere. It wasn’t the 2007 Blackout, but it was an experience those young men won’t soon forget.

While I agree about the defense...

give Cox a break. He’s played under immense pressure all season. He proved last night that if the Defense can get some occasional stops he’s good enough. He’s not Stafford, but he had a decent game last night.

decent maybe

but Cox has been a huge disappointment to me. I hope this proves to our recruiters that just because a QB puts up good numbers, and excels in HS football, does in no way automatically make him a good QB on the college level, especially an SEC QB.
I actually feel for the kid, having to go out there week after week, looking like a deer in my headlights. Yes, he had that ONE good game, but as the season has gone on, I haven’t seen much of anything he has done, to make me believe he can compete at this level.
I wish the kid the best in the future, but can’t wait to see him move on……

First off....

A win is NEVER a bad thing. I will not ever root for the Dawgs to lose in order to get rid of a coach or force a change of some sort.

Last night did not in any way cure all ills as far as the defense goes, however I think that it does show that with a good pass rush from the front four the scheme works. Auburn was the 2nd overall Offense in the SEC and with the exception of the first two drives we shut them down. IF Willie is retained (which I think he was going to be either way) and our Defense is the old “Junkyard Dawgs” next year (which I really think that they are going to be), then what?

As for Joe Cox…..he’s a good kid, and a Dawg to the core, but I will be glad to see him go as our QB. He locks onto receivers, throws late over the middle and holds on to the ball way to long. These are things you expect from a Freshman not a 5th Year Senior.

James, I hope you were not one of the people booing Cox in the stands...

… because one of the few hard and fast rules I have when at a ballgame is that you never… ever… boo your own team. The poor plays the offense had frustrated me, but I was far more incensed by the classless, ignorant people booing in the stands early. I’m going to go ahead and guess that they were among the ones cheering later on when Cox threw a long TD pass and another long almost-TD to Tavarres King.

I understand your frustration, and like any reasonable person, I wholeheartedly share your fear that a strong finish might just possibly preserve Willie Martinez’s job. I really think that no matter what happens, though, Damon Evans understands that Willie Two Thumbs has to go. Georgia stopped a bad Auburn team when it had to, but as Kyle said, the egregious errors that the Tennessee and Florida defenses exploited in embarrassing blow-outs once again reared their ugly heads this week. Auburn just couldn’t take advantage of them, for some reason. I don’t think Willie helped his case in this game.

Remember, too, that Chris Todd threw at least 4 “gimmie” interceptions, but the Georgia defense only pulled down 2 of them.

Vineyard - saw your other posts

and agree. I think Auburn is just a horrible team. They could have, with a QB, ate us apart with posts and deep slants. Our defense was able to stop them, when it was obvious they were going to throw. Mostly auburn stopped themselves until the 4th quarter. Chris Todd, bless him, is even worse that Cox and it seems Auburn is in a bad way at QB right now as well. Auburn game out prepared and motivated and mostly couldnt get it done, I didnt see anything different form CWM.

I dont like the booing your team stuff either. It accomplishes nothing but making yourself look classless. It also ques me in you probably dont care anything about the University as an institution of learning.

Please note

Reshad Jones interception was because he was out of position. In other words it was dumb luck not skillful ball-hawking.

Luck is half the game in football.

It was about time some of those turnovers actually went our way. I don’t care how we got them.

not being in position is piss poor play,

getting an interception due to piss poor play – that’s dumb luck =)

Also in the "dumb luck" category:

Having an interception bounce off of the defender’s hands and into the grasp of the intended receiver.

However, I credit Orson Charles with not giving up on the play and I’ll take the bounces, which have gone against us for a while now. Luck is the intersection of preparation and opportunity. I’ll give a guy credit for catching a ball that hits him on the hands.

I didnt boo the Dawgs,

and of course I was happy when I went to sleep Sat. night. But-all Im saying is :
beating a team that is not that good- the fun is short lived.
when we are a team that is coached well enough to win in Jacksonville and beat the team that I HATE THE MOST. we will then be a quality team that can go for a championship

On that point, James...

… I think we can all wholeheartedly agree.

I hate Florida.

Richt and the status quo

I couldn’t agree more. But it is too early to thing about the status quo. We have Kentucky and Tech left. The latter is by no means a walk in the park.

If we win both, my question would be "Why did this turn around take so long? Why do we continue to play down to our opponents such as Arizon State who took us to the last seconds before Blair Walsh bailed us out. Playing down to opponents is self-destructive because close games against the Little Sisters Of The Poor prohibits the use of the scrubs which is essential to get them seasoned and ready for next year. The most glaring example this year is the 99% use of journeyman QB Joe Cox. If he goes down in the next two games, what then? It also means that we start 2010 with nary an experienced QB in sight. What kind of personnel management is that.?

When Richt was hired, I dreamed of the FSU approach to things. Vanquish the vanquishable so that when we’re somewhere in the third quarter the scrubs begin to play.

Richt has never followed that script. So it is most often “next year” with us. To repeat, this is losing proposition.

He begins his 10th year as HC without even playing in the BCS championship game, much less winning one. And I see little chance that we will be East Division champions next year. If so, that will be the fifth successive year with such.

OFF WITH THEIR HEADS. THEY’RE ABJECT FAILURES.

While these are fair criticisms . . .

. . . I hope that last sentence was hyperbole in the service of your larger point (which, to be fair, it well may have been).

If Georgia beats Kentucky and wins its bowl game, even with a loss to Georgia Tech, Mark Richt will have won 90 games in nine years. I’m going to go out on a limb and say that ten wins a year (not to mention two SEC championships, three SEC championship game appearances, four years of finishing no worse than tied for first place in the SEC East, three Sugar Bowl appearances, and two final rankings in the top three) doesn’t quite constitute abject failure.

Go 'Dawgs!
