New BlogPoll released; Oklahoma ranking absurd
The new BlogPoll is out and No. 1 Alabama still holds a narrow edge over No. 2 Florida with 50 first-place votes to the Gators' 43.
Georgia is unranked, which makes perfect sense, but Oklahoma remains in the top 25, which makes no sense whatsoever.
The Bulldogs are 3-2. The Sooners are 2-2. Advantage: Georgia.
The Bulldogs have beaten Arkansas, Arizona State, and South Carolina. The Sooners have beaten Idaho State and Tulsa. Advantage: Georgia.
The Bulldogs' two losses were to Louisiana State and Oklahoma State, who are ranked fourth and sixteenth in the BlogPoll, respectively. The Sooners' two losses were to Miami (Florida) and Brigham Young, who are ranked ninth and 21st in the BlogPoll, respectively. Advantage: Georgia.
I don't think either one of them deserves to be ranked---I tied with Doug Gillett for fourth place in the running for the Straight Bangin' Award---but there's no way to justify ranking Oklahoma and not ranking Georgia.

Oklahoma: The next Notre Dame?
It appears Oklahoma is getting the same treatment from the pollsters as Notre Dame did a few years back…respect due to their long tradition, but a noticable drop-off in on-field production. If I remember correctly, ND seemed to get ranked much higher than they deserved post-Lou Holtz into the early Ty Willingham years…it took several years of no bowl wins and mediocre seasons before the polls punished them and ranked them appropriately. Now you see Charlie Weis complaining about lack of recognition!
Will this ever happen to Oklahoma?
For extra credit
Compare and contrast Ohio State’s record in the BCS era with Oklahoma’s, and reflect on how the media and fan communities regard both teams.
Re: Oklahoma ranking absurd - somewhat disagree on 2 points
“Georgia is unranked, which makes perfect sense..”.
This does NOT make “perfect sense”. Admittedly, when Georgia lost to number 8 in the country, OSU, a slight drop in the polls was justified. But when they lost to number 4 in the final seconds and were completely tossed from the top 25 (when teams like BYU – who got WAXED by a horrible FSU – stay ranked) that was ridiculous.
“I don’t think either one of them deserves to be ranked..”
Oklahoma certainly does not deserve to be ranked, but Georgia is at least a top 25 team. When you consider opponent quality and strength of schedule, no ‘rational’ person would keep UGA out of the polls – not to mention putting OK in.
Yeah
This is ridiculous, but there’s very little you can do to change perception. Georgia is not seen as a top tier team, and even though both of our losses have reasonable excuses (flu on the road, horrible calls) just like Oklahoma’s do (Lost QB for 2nd half, missing starting QB on the road), we’re never going to get the benefit of the doubt until we start becoming the dominant force that Oklahoma usually is. Sure, Georgia wins 10 games a year regularly, but we seem to loose our biggest contests each year. Falling flat on your face every year regularly isn’t great for perception. Oklahoma at least usually comes through 1/2 the time, beating Texas or some other big name team at some point, before losing in the bowl game.
If Phil Steele is accurate . . .
. . . then, from 2004 through the first portion of 2009, Georgia went 17-12 (including a 4-1 record in bowl games) against ranked opponents, while, during that same span, Oklahoma went 15-11 (including a 1-4 record in bowl games) against ranked opponents.
In the last five and a half years, the Bulldogs have a .586 winning percentage in what might fairly be called big games and the Sooners have a .577 winning percentage. Even though Oklahoma has been to more conference championship games than Georgia has in that span, the ’Dawgs have played more ranked opponents.
If the perception is that the Red and Black are falling flat on their faces more often than the Crimson and Cream, then those doing the perceiving need to learn more math.

"Oklahoma at least usually comes through 1/2 the time, beating Texas or some other big name team at some point"
Agreed, but the “big name schools” they beat are always in the Big 12 teams. You have to admit that the Big 12 has been inferior to the SEC since the beginning of time. In the old days, the only team Oklahoma played all year was Nebraska, and vice versa. They both would look like champions in the regular season, but then look like chumps in the post season. You’d think the pollsters could see the pattern. Jeez.
Want to know why it's whack?
Take one look at ATL Eagle’s BlogPoll ballot…I dare you. It defies all logic (resume or predictor or even the “sniff test”). GA Tech at 9?

I was surprised..
When the Sooners were still ranked and the Bulldogs weren’t. To be honest I would give both the benefit of the doubt at this point and rank both teams. Considering both teams loses a serious case can be made that both warrant rankings. UGA will be back in the rankings when it matters most, towards the end of the season UGA will be a 10-20 ranked team.
"UGA will be back in the rankings when it matters most"
True, but it’s the continued lack of respect Georgia gets throughout the season… year after year. The post season tells the tale…
Just look at OK’s bowl record for the past 6 years vs UGA’s:
OKLAHOMA
2008 (Orange) LOSS – Oklahoma 14 Florida 24
2007 (Fiesta) LOSS – Oklahoma 28 West Virgina 48
2006 (Fiesta) LOSS – Oklahoma 42 Boise State 43
2005 (Holiday)NEAR LOSS – Oklahoma 17 Oregon 14
2004 (Orange) LOSS – OKLAHOMA 19 Southern Cal 55
2003 (Sugar) LOSS – OKLAHOMA 14 LSU 21
-———————————————————————————————-
GEORGIA
2008 (Capital One) WIN – Georgia 24 Michigan St. 12
2007 (Sugar Bowl) WIN – Georgia 41 Hawaii 10
2006 (Chick-fil-a) Win – Georgia 31 Virginia Tech 24
2005 (Sugar Bowl) NEAR WIN – Goergia 35 West Virginia 38
2004 (Outback) WIN – Georgia 24 Wisconsin 21
2003 (Capital One) WIN – Georgia 34 Purdue 27
Nuff said!
Yeah but
OU played in 5 BCS bowls in those 6 years. UGA has played in 2 BCS bowls.
Plus “near win” and “near loss?” Couldn’t you call any game won by a TD or less a near loss and any game lost by a TD or less a near win?
