Around SBN: Jeremy Lin Continues Rampage, New York Wins On Road

One simple question

After having to kick off from our own fifteen yard line, why did we not simply kick the ball out of bounds and give LSU the ball on the forty?  It seems to me that we would have been much better served to not even allow the possibility of a deep return, force LSU to actually have to manage the clock, and take away the possibility of them being able to just run the ball down our throats for four or five yards, run the clock down, and kick a field goal.

Because they would have gotten the ball at our 45. The penalty puts the ball 30 yards away from the spot the kicker tees it up. It still would have been an improvement, but there was no way of knowing that at the time.

I see...

I was not aware of the thirty yard rule, I thought it was simply the 40 yard line or the spot where it went out of bounds. Gracias.

Yeah, I think a better . . .

strategy would have been a squib kick to the second line. It would have eaten up some clock and not put the ball in the hands of a guy who was a whisper away from making the U.S. Olympic track team.
