The Question No Georgia Bulldogs Fan Wants to Have to Face

Later today, I will be bringing you a special World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party Law School Graduation Fete Paid for by the University Foundation (I'm sure that's what Michael Adams would prefer to call it) edition of Too Much Information, in which I will be positive (or, at least, as positive as I am capable of being at this point).

Accordingly, I want to go ahead and get all the negativity out of my system now, and I am using the attached poll for that purpose.

Assume the worst tomorrow. Assume the Red and Black go careening over the precipice. What changes will then need to be made at what I would argue is the most critical position of need on the Georgia coaching staff?

I have listed what I believe are the obvious options, but you are free to vote "none of the above" and explain your answer in the comments below.

Oops...

… I voted for Sly Croom before I saw tankertoad listed. Can I change my vote?

Right now, Willie Martinez has one vote . . .

. . . and tankertoad has none. That is just sad. Anyone reading Dawg Sports comment threads on a regular basis knows tankertoad makes more in-game adjustments than Willie.

Feel free to vote again. If you like, you can log in using the name a recently deceased citizen of Telfair County.

Croom, because

with any of the others, Garner is a goner and recruiting will suffer. The hiring of Croom may not cost us Garner, and even if it does, Croom can reduce the impact of Garner’s leaving more than any of the others. Also, Croom is an “in your face” guy who puts up with NO NONSENSE, which everyone agrees we need in a DC, given the personality of our HC. I think Kirby Smart, my second choice, is a goner to FSU anyway__heck, Tallahassee is less than 50 miles from his home town.

Croom may be a no nonsense coach...

But I think we can all agree that what our defense really needs is the Greatest Mustache of Our Era (GMOOE).

Only Dick Bumpas can bring UGA’s defense the mustache it so desperately needs and the mustache the fans deserve.

I want every college football fan in America to be as miserable as I am.

Two words: Todd Donnan

I’m done with hiring coaches who insist as a condition of their employment that we give jobs on the staff to their imbecile sons.

I really think Smart would be the greatest choice

He might not think he’s ready to leave Saban yet. Bumpas would also be a good one.

It would have made as much sense for Kyle to have listed Charlie Strong....

…as Kirby Smart as neither of them is leaving UA or UF to come to UGA at the same position.

by Vindexdawg on Oct 30, 2009 10:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Not necessarily

I’ll grant that Kirby Smart is a relatively long shot, but he is a Georgia alum and (unlike Will Muschamp) he hasn’t been given the sort of “head coach in waiting” tag that would discourage him from going elsewhere.

I’m not saying that I’m sure he’d come if we called, but, unlike Charlie Strong, he’d take the call.

Hands off Kirby.

Why, surely an Alabama fan . . .

. . . would have no quarrel with a coach leaving because “Mama called”!

Besides, Nick Saban can always find another University of Georgia graduate to mold into a first-class defensive coordinator.

I voted "none of the above"

All smart head football coaches (a distinction that includes Richt) have “short lists” in mind. I’d be willing to bet a large sum of money that CMR already knows who he’d call should any of his assistants need to be replaced for any reason.

No idea who is at the top of his DC list, but all past evidence tells me that it’ll be someone slightly off the radar.

by Hobnail_Boot on Oct 30, 2009 1:36 PM EDT reply actions

I'd hope

that Kirby would come home to mama, but I’d venture a guess that he thinks he’s a lot closer to a NC and ultimately the HC jobs that would come with it at Alabama than he would be coming to UGA.

Personally, I just want a new scheme. I think people have just solved Willie’s D (hello play action and TE sitting in the soft zone!). I don’t care if we kept Willie if he went to something like a 3-4 or 3-3. Just something to force the other teams to find new ways to beat us.

On a side note. I know Muschamp isn’t coming. But can someone seriously explain how the fact that our offense always torched his D was the sole reason not to hire him. Wouldn’t he be coaching against the other teams in the SEC rather than our offense every game? Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t he helm some pretty stout Ds at LSU? Though I know lately his Texas D has been a little hit and miss. But I never really understood the UGA torched him theory.

Yes, that is my son. Yes, that is a bottle of Crown.

by BCDawg97 on Oct 30, 2009 2:33 PM EDT reply actions

I think that the basis for the theory is...

…that Saban basically called the shots on D at LSU and that Will was basically his Executive Officer. As indeed was the case with him and Tuberville at Auburn. Although that need not in itself disqualify him; really it’s just more of a corrective to frantic posts that since he’s a former Dawg and has been DC on some great Ds, we just need to holler and carry on and he’ll come to Athens. It reminds me of Gator fans squealing for Stoops to “come home” from Oklahoma when they were starting to get pissed about Zook. Forget about Muschamp or Smart, it’s not gonna happen. When Bear Bryant heard Mama call, it wasn’t to be an OC or DC. And if it had been, Bama would have twisted slowly in the wind until they got their offer right. But there are lots of other possibilities out there. I myself would love to see a Dawg as our DC but any sane person must understand that the two primary qualifications are capability first, then availability.

by Vindexdawg on Oct 30, 2009 10:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think Bryant is a fair comparison

since he was successful head coach at three schools before going to Alabama.

by CraigT on Oct 31, 2009 8:04 AM EDT up reply actions

Good point

Bear Bryant gave up what was then a good coaching job for what was then a bad coaching job so that he could go home to his alma mater. I would argue that going from being the Alabama defensive coordinator to being the Georgia defensive coordinator is a lateral move, but, if it’s a step down, it isn’t remotely as much of a step down as the Bear took by going home to Tuscaloosa.

Will Muschamp is off the board because he’s going to be the head coach at Texas. Kirby Smart has no such impediments. I’m not sure he’d take the job, but neither can anyone else be sure he’d turn it down.

i just want to thank all the little people that made this campaing happen

if i am not elected as DC i would be willing to take on the position of “i will kill you if you dont have a license” at UGA. As Czars are popular, maybe i can get a direct opponent as Czar of off field discipline.
