Around SBN: Raiders' GM Begins The Purge

Two things I took from that game

One, the run blocking has to be where we're failing.  Our run game has been painfully bad really all season, but I just can't believe that Richard Samuel and Caleb King are that bad that they're gonna get under 10 yards together for an entire half.  I think last week we had 0 rushing yards at halftime.  That's ridiculous.  I will say that seeing WaShaun come in and play well was a good thing, but I think our run blocking is where we're lacking.  Our guys are getting hit in the backfield way too much.  It is weird though because our pass blocking has been pretty darn good all year.

And second, special teams are the weakest part of our team.  Everybody talking about Willie Martinez and Bobo, but they have their days.  Special teams ALWAYS sucks.  My Michigan-fan friend came with me to his first game in Athens today, and I asked him if it was weird that we NEVER return punts.  Never!  I call Logan Gray "Mr. Fair Catch", but really it's anybody back there.  What are we doing wrong?  Are we not blocking the guys coming downfield or what?  It just blows my mind that we don't return punts, we don't make the first man miss on kickoffs, and then the BLEEPING awful play at the end of the game that lost it.  Bobo and Martinez were okay-to-good today, special teams SUCKED, period.

For the hell of it, #3, AJ Green is the man.  He won the game for us today and we fell on our butts.

The run blocking is part of it, but there is more

Just as a general statement on the season, it has not been very good. But today was a bit different. We were consistently running into the heart of an eight or nine man front. I don’t care who your offensive line is, they are not going to open up holes. Playcalling is at fault there. We were being challenged to throw and backed down. If we don’t display a passing game to be afraid of, then teams can load up against the run. Once Washaun went in, we started running outside more. There was more room there-LSU was loading up towards the inside. Unfortunately, it didnt last and we quickly went back to the runs that were failing miserably. Even my 17 year old sister asked why we would stop doing the one run play that looked like it had a chance if LSU was yet to stop it.

And yeah, special teams are atrocious. One reason kick coverage was so weak today was that we had players who I have never seen before on that unit. Literally-I have no idea who on earth some of those guys are. But I think I’ve already made my thoughts on all facets of the game pretty clear.

The lack of creative play calling did effect the run

UGA is somewhat trying to set up play action. But without a hot pass, a TE pass, a screen, a something other than throw deep to AJ, you cant set up the run, and therefore cant set up the play action. We are so one dimensional – the teams watch the film and I fully expect 8 in the box every week. I actually had someone tell me the weather affected Cox last week. Ok, what was it today? it was horrible play calling backed up with horrible execution. We cant run the ball for crap – part of it is the blocking, part of it is we dont have great backs this year, but a lot of it is the failure to work the short passes and develop the play action to free up the run. or the pass. thats the point of it.

What burns me us is that we could do it

We could have gone to the tight end all day long. With as much as LSU was crowding the line, not only did AJ have a ton of single coverage (a good bit of it against someone other than Peterson), but the middle of the field was wide open. We didn’t have to worry about splitting the safeties-they had been taken out of the passing game before the ball was snapped. Our tight end and slot receivers should have had a field day. We just don’t take advantage of the opportunities that are presented.
