Georgia Bulldogs v. LSU Tigers Game Day Open Comment Thread

LSU Tigers at Georgia Bulldogs, Oct 3, 2009 3:30 PM EDT

I have no idea whether this is the game in which one or both of these teams will put it all together, one or both of these teams will continue to befuddle us, or one or both of these teams will perform somewhere in the middle of those two extremes. However, I am fully cognizant of the fact that 4-1 and 3-0 in conference play is better than 3-2 and 2-1 in conference play.

Therefore, let us root, root, root for the home team with many heartfelt exhortations and engage one another with impassioned dedication to our team. If you want to send up a prayer for good weather like the chaplain in "Patton," that'd be all right, too, since those of us who will be there would prefer not to be soaked like we were last week.

Go 'Dawgs!

After my rain-soaked weekend at the ASU game

I’m ready to watch the Dawgs play from the comfort of my recliner.

But, to give myself the most accurate gameday experience possible, I am cooking corndogs.

Geaux Dawgs!!!

i am surprised T Kyle King didnt do his usual “its the first sat in Oct and that means somebody in the midwest is playing for a shovel they found in a cave, or a rock, or some other yard implement” lines.

That is good and bad. I want a new DCO. But I want all our players to do well.

I have long pined for a change in a new DCO and a new OCO. Today along with OKST were good examples of needing good OCOs. We can’t entirely blame the Running game on King and Samuels. They plays they were given were right up the middle. Which we don’t have yet.

Refs need to let players decide games

That call changed everything. No it didn’t mean we had to fail to cover the kick or let Scott make a great run. But if you take away 20 yards of penalties, they have to throw to get in FG range, it’s a totally different situation.

After reviewing some of the comments

I am not as upset with the offense as the defense. It did take Cox a while to settle down, but that last scoring drive looked classic Mark Richt/David Greene. The only difference was that the defense didn’t finish the drill. Ealey (sp.?) looked good. But we don’t have a NFL caliber QB or RB. They don’t have to be 1st round pick NFL caliber, but at least draftable to compete in the SEC.
But the Defense seems to have plenty of NFL talent in the front seven and can’t consistently make stops.
O playing to talent available, D is not.

by hbtd on Oct 3, 2009 7:27 PM EDT reply actions

Not a very good 18 months for the state of GA...to say the least

Last year, we lost bad to Alabama and the Techies AT HOME. And then the unemployment in GA skyrocketed to 10.7%. And then, the bad flooding in metro Atlanta. And then… and then… Well, there’s always next year for things to be better

by thefirstgenesis on Oct 3, 2009 7:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I was circling this game...

as a potential stumbling block. And yes, we held them to 20 points. I wouldn’t mind having LSU score 20 points on us …IF we score a little bit more than them. Three quarters of play with not a single field goal is pathetic on our offense. Georgia CAN’T SCORE period.

Still congrats to LSU. They played us tough. Georgia even with AJ Green still couldn’t get an offense going.

It was a nail biter for both sides

LSU was tentative through most of the game. That’s the difference between Miles and Saban. Saban knew when to take chances, to go for it. Miles has to be backed into a corner before he does that. Luckily, and I mean LUCKILY, he found some conjones with a minute left and it paid off. Good, hell GREAT, game Dawgs. It could have gone either way, we both know that.

I appreciate all you guys allowing me to comment , and not treating me like some dumb blonde :)

I am blonde, but love watching and commenting on both my Dawgs and Braves blogs! :)

Ok no more comments please :) jk

by dawgblogit on Oct 3, 2009 8:02 PM EDT up reply actions

No.

It would come forward another 15 yards, and it would have given them the ball at our 45. (Which would, of course, still have been an improvement.)

Basically, if you kick it out of bounds, they get the ball 30 yards downfield from where you kicked it from.

What happened to Rennie?

So I’m watching the tivo’d game and we’re struggling (duh) and Rennie’s not playing? What’s up with that??!!!

by podunkdawg on Oct 3, 2009 8:15 PM EDT reply actions

no one every knew -

best guess is playing time….no one knows

by tankertoad on Oct 3, 2009 8:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Rennie cannot get entire drives off

It is no coincidence that LSU had a long drive when Rennie wasn’t out there. He is too good.

by SG Standard on Oct 3, 2009 9:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Time mgmt

They wanted to give him time so that he was fresh second half

by dawgblogit on Oct 3, 2009 9:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Discouraging that our defense spent so much time on the field that we needed to give players entire possessions off.

by RJohn on Oct 3, 2009 9:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Oddly enough

if we come back from tonight to win the rest of our games (most importantly Tn & Fl) we still get to play alabama for the SEC Championship.

by podunkdawg on Oct 3, 2009 9:09 PM EDT reply actions

I HOPE SO!!

I hate losing. Hate losing in the SEC. But we can still win the East

by dawgblogit on Oct 3, 2009 9:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Lets be honest

Do you really think that’s gonna happen?

by SG Standard on Oct 3, 2009 9:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Not unless

Offense can play consistently
Defense can play how they did tonight every game from here on out!

by dawgblogit on Oct 3, 2009 9:24 PM EDT up reply actions

It is a possibility

I did not say it was a probability. However, if we decide to bring the ENTIRE football team (offense, defense & special teams) to the same game, it’s a definite possibility. I believe Tn is very beatable. Florida has a big question mark in my mind right now – the situation with Tebow. Still several weeks until that game and if they play tebow during those weeks, I can see a possibility that he’s not playing in the cocktail party due to injury.

by podunkdawg on Oct 3, 2009 9:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Folks, its time to admit what we see before us.

We have a HORRIBLE offensive coordinator.

We have a HORRIBLE defensive coordinator.

We have a HORRIBLE special teams coach.

We have GREAT, GREAT players who absolutely kill themselves on that field.

Aside from his stubborn refusal to fire bad coaches, we have a GREAT head coach.

We are going 8-4 or 7-5 this year, and that might be a good thing. It is time to clean house in the coaching ranks.

by Muckbeast on Oct 3, 2009 9:34 PM EDT reply actions

The reason some games the OC/DC don’t look as bad as they are is because our amazing players bail them out. It really is that simple. If the OC/DC didn’t suck, we’d have some sort of consistency.

by Muckbeast on Oct 3, 2009 9:35 PM EDT up reply actions

As much as I want the DC to go...

It will take the GA team to lose every game and giving up 30+ points to have Willie gone. If we win every single game this year, he Willie stays. So yes, it is a dilemna. GA football team wins every game from now on or have GA lose 3 or 4 more games this year and Willie fired

by thefirstgenesis on Oct 3, 2009 9:37 PM EDT up reply actions

IMHO

We have an irratically decent OC
a bad DC
and a bad ST
We have a good/great HC, whom needs to bring the hammer down.

We have had the skills. We just couldn’t pay the bills.

With our recruiting record… being ranked below 15 in the polls is failing.

We need to win.

by dawgblogit on Oct 3, 2009 9:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think we have a decent OC. I think we have such great players, they just make stuff happen in spite of him.

But the rest, I agree with 100%.

by Muckbeast on Oct 3, 2009 11:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Tankertoad has been arguing a house cleaning all year.....

i agree with all of that. CMR has got to get mean, take the emotional toil, and clean house.

by tankertoad on Oct 4, 2009 2:26 AM EDT up reply actions

And yes...

I would dye my hair pink if Georgia beats Florida this year which that ain’t gonna happen. I’m being very realistic about this knowing how we played today

by thefirstgenesis on Oct 3, 2009 9:39 PM EDT reply actions

Celebration???

I Thought we would only be paying for the 2007 shennanigans in 2008. I was wrong. Officials see us as 1980’s Miami. Find me an LSU fan who would bet they win without that call. I mean WOW.

by lebetkowi on Oct 4, 2009 12:22 AM EDT reply actions

The celebration call was b.s. but...

…you guys still hurt yourself by allowing an above-average run back (40 yards) AND by not kicking off with at least four guys on either side of the kickoff man, tacking on another 5 yards of field position.

The penalty aside, we should have put the game away in the first half, to be up at least 21 – 0 by halftime and coasted the rest of the way. Instead, we throw a dumb little pass that gets intercepted. settle for gimme field goals and screw up a 4th and inches.

Good luck in the rest of your season, we’ll be pulling for you (as I’m sure you will for us) for strength of schedule issues and the like.

by TigerPaw on Oct 4, 2009 2:13 AM EDT up reply actions

All we had to do was kick the ball out of bounds.

Certainly their 40 is a reasonable compromise for kicking off from your own 15. But that removes the “challenge” aspect, doesn’t it?

Fabris needs to go. It’s unacceptable to lose a game because you are too stupid NOT to kick it to their great return man with the game on the line.

by rbubp on Oct 4, 2009 8:36 AM EDT reply actions

It would't be at the 40

The penalty is enforced 30 yards from the spot of the kickoff, so LSU would have gotten it at our 45. The odds of us keeping them out were slim and none.

I am well aware that the penalty is not what caused us to lose, and anybody who is arguing otherwise didn’t see the same game I saw. It sure didn’t help though.

by SG Standard on Oct 4, 2009 9:19 AM EDT up reply actions

Keep burying your heads guys....

If there was absolutely nothing different about our team, results, etc. the last two years except that the coach’s name was Jim Donnan instead of Mark Richt, there would be a bloodletting going on right now. Richt is getting taken apart on gameday and clearly outworked during the week. The metaphorical lid that Richt wanted to knock off in 2002 has been firmly reattached.

That game yesterday made my Mom drop an F-Bomb.

I am 31 years old. Yesterday I heard my mother, who does not swear very often at all, drop the F-bomb. A saintly mother and grandmother who never swears dropped the F-bomb over that debacle. I think it was appropriate and summed it all up for me. I am really hoping that the pain of this year will be a catalyst for change next year, and maybe even this year. Our offense looked worse than a Vandy offense in the first half. One first down in the first HALF is the equivalent of upper decking the toilet at your grandmothers house after she made you lunch. I for one did not get completely distraught because we really shouldn’t have been in a position to win with the way the offense played in the first half. We were lucky to have taken the lead at the end, and if we can’t do the small thing s right like tackle and play special teams, whose failures led to the easy LSU score, then we don’t deserve to win. I love the Braves, Dawgs, and Falcons. They always are finding new ways to break my heart. I gotta tell you though, I wouldn’t have it any other way. So in my mind, it’s time to circle the wagons, get out your best Red and Black and get ready for the long fall ahead. Go Dawgs!

I think Erk Russell could have kicked Clint Eastwood and John Wayne's butts with a corn cob and one hand tied behind his back. GATA!

Some trends...

As a Georgia alma mater from the class of 2006, I’ve seen how the ebbs and tides of the GA football program had shaped up. But now, it looks like the program is heading in the wrong direction. Just to let you know…

1. Each year, our defense is getting worse in almost every statistical category with the biggest being average points scored by opponents per game. Our defensive players deserve better with the talent they have, however, on the field, it doesn’t show as much because of the head scratching scheme Willie employs. From 2005 until now, each year we lost a game on defense where we should have won. This year, it is this game. Who cares if LSU started on our own 30, 45, or 50 yard line in the last minute of the game? We still couldn’t stop them, end of story.

2. Now on offense. I had mixed feelings about Bobo calling plays because there were times where he could throw a lighter in the offensive players and score a bunch and then lay an egg for three quarters before a
However, for the past three seasons he has been OC, there has been at least one game where the GA offense has NOT scored in the first half. Remember South Carolina and GT in 07, Alabama in 08, and now LSU in 09?

3. Special teams. I don’t think I can go further with this but to say the least, it already has become atrocious. More yards given up on kickoffs and poor execution. Enough said.

For every game we play, these issues are creeping up to potential sink us just like a flood slowly reaching past its river banks, and if we continue to ignore them, it will swallow us whole. The coaching styles have to change. To compete, mediocrity is not an option, and we can’t stop saying “We got to limit our turnovers Blah Blah Blah” without any action. Oh and by the way, we had no turnovers in the game (except Cox’s interception at the end) and we still lost.

I do believe this season is a turning point for our program heading into the next decade and what changes that will be made will define what kind of teams will be produced in the next several years ahead. It’s hard to say that the GA football program is clumped into the likes of FSU, Clemson, and Washington, but if we don’t play football the right way, I won’t be ashamed to admit that GA plays football like the FSU’s, Clemson’s and such.

Double the work...

He’s probably busy researching how he’s going to defend Richt after next week’s loss while he writes his defense for this one. It sickens me that we are going to give that douchebag his first SEC win.

problems...

QB – We do not have consistent play at QB. It’s amazing how bad a team looks when it doesn’t have a good one. We can complain about the other aspects of the game, but had Cox just completed half his passes in the first half the game would have been a lot different. If opposing defenses do not respect our QB it’s going to be difficult to run the ball.

Will CMR just suffer this entire season with a below average QB or get someone else some reps so we’re not starting from scratch next season?

I know I’m throwing Cox under the bus, but if it’s not him who is responsible for this offense?

by mdhenshaw on Oct 4, 2009 3:12 PM EDT reply actions

Hmm....

How about the highest paid state employee in GA? Is he ever going to be held responsible for anything?

by UgaMatt on Oct 4, 2009 3:24 PM EDT reply actions

Why do some of you even watch the games?

The people on here bashing our team disgust me. As you bash our D, you do realize that without their spectacular play we SHOULD have been down 28-0 at the half. For everyone who has determined that the sky is falling and that since we have lost 2 games that we are now in a spiral down to FSU levels of mediocrity, you’ve been given a team that has played too well for too long. I honestly think that perhaps GA fans are reaching the levels of delusional expectations previously only seen in Alabama fans.

I expect better from us.

by DarinSmith on Oct 4, 2009 5:50 PM EDT reply actions

I live in Florida and the FSU fans are truly depressed. One FSU fan said “Mark Richt will be our next coach.” When I asked why would CMR make a lateral move he threatened to fight me. haha
