Watching Ole Miss . . .
jump out to a good start versus Arkansas, while Ohio State muddles through against the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Does anybody know the history behind that nickname, by the way? Gophers, even golden ones, are neither terribly majestic or fierce. Actually, given the recent history of Minnesota football the gopher may be exactly the right mascot. Forget that I asked that.

I'm guessing...
That Tressel spent at least one day this week searching for plastic explosives he could mold into arousing gopher shapes.
But what he does in his spare time is really none of our business.

My story, and I'm sticking to it.
I think Minnesota wanted to come up with a mascot that highlighted as much as possible the funny accent many Miiinnesooootans have. I mean, it’s just so easy… Goooolden Gooophers. Goooo Gooophers!
by vineyarddawg on Oct 24, 2009 4:15 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well, whadda ya know, Wikipedia disagrees with me. (I can fix that! Where’s that edit button…)
To wit:
The Gopher mascot is a tradition as old as the state. Minnesota was tabbed the "Gopher State" in 1857 after a satirizing cartoon, depicting nine Gophers with the heads of local politicians pulling a locomotive, was published. The story was over legislative action for a $5 million railroad proposal in western Minnesota. Later, the University picked up the nickname.
The "Golden" adjective has not always been a part of the Gopher nickname. During the 1930s, the Gophers wore gold jerseys and pants. Legendary KSTP radio announcer Halsey Hall coined the term "Golden Gophers" in reference to the team’s all-gold attire on the field. From 1932 through 1941, Minnesota compiled an impressive record, losing only 12 games and winning seven Big Ten titles and five national championships—a true "golden" decade of Gopher football.
I still think it’s funny to hear a Minnesotan say it.

Thanks for this info
I have always thought the “Golden Gophers” was a goofy mascot name, still do :)

Saftey Blitz...hmm
Wish Willie knew what one of these were….Notice how both teams that put up over 40 on us get ownt on Offense against Ala ?…Oddly enough both teams get ownt by Ala using a simple Saftey Blitz and decent coverage…
If UGA wins next week danielson and Verne will be crying…They were so funny to listen to for that Ark vs Fla game…they were so bias for Fla it was sad. Every time a call or play didn’t work out for Fla they were making excuses for every player. When Tebow skrewed up it was always someone elses fault.
by Merk on Oct 24, 2009 5:58 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
you know, i got an idea
how about UGA just kick off from the 1 yard line to start the game, and that will just clear out any celebration penalties for the day.
ok, nap time. Bama’s D is great, surprised they cant run better though.
by tankertoad on Oct 24, 2009 5:59 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
nap didnt happen as Alabama wont shut the door
I wish UGA players would notice the focus and determination of Alabama. Ingram just fumbled for the first time – he is on the sidelines, helmet still on, not looking for love or making excuses. The Defense of bama gives 100% every play even though the offense isnt helping them. Special Teams are a difference maker rather than a hinderance to overcome.

how can you have a celebration call when the game is over?
please someone tell me that they cant rekick on a 0 clock for a celebration call
by tankertoad on Oct 24, 2009 7:02 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Technically, yes.
Not to nit-pick or anything, but Gary Danielson was technically right. The ball was live on the field until covered by the Alabama defender. (He tried to lateral to a guy behind him, but he was lying down on the field when doing so.) If Cody took his helmet off before the defender covered the ball, that should have been a penalty. And even if there’s 0:00 on the clock, the game can’t end on a defensive penalty. There would have been one more untimed down played.
And, given their track record thus far in the game, Alabama would have either blocked it or Tennessee’s kicker would have missed it, so it probably wouldn’t have mattered.
by vineyarddawg on Oct 24, 2009 7:30 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
i get it
part of me wishes it was called – just so this issue could be thoroughly addressed and vetted because i am sick of it. if alabama lost over that call that state would have revolted.
and part of me says it was a good no call.
by tankertoad on Oct 24, 2009 7:57 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Exactly
It’s dumb that it’s even an issue.
The Bill of Rights prohibits unreasonable searches and seizures because reasonable searches and seizures are allowed. The rules of college football prohibit excessive celebrations because proportional celebrations are permitted.
Alabama just blocked what would have been a game-winning field goal against its second-biggest rival to remain unbeaten and on track for the national championship. It was a big, big, big deal. The guy who got the block understandably was excited, and (with remarkable fluidity for a big man) he took off his helmet. Anyone who thinks that’s disproportionate and deserving of being penalized is an uptight old fuddy-duddy with no appreciation for the joy of life.

Egad, AeroDawg!
I agree with tankertoad, though. Tim Tebow obviously is a phenomenal football player of enormous achievements, but the records are not comparable.
Herschel played in the era of eleven-game regular seasons, Tebow in the era of twelve-game regular seasons.
Herschel played in the era before conference championship games, Tebow in the era of conference championship games.
Herschel played in the era in which bowl games did not count towards season statistics, Tebow in the era in which they do.
It does not diminish Tebow’s accomplishment to say his and Herschel’s are not comparable. It’s like Maris hitting 61 in 162 games and Ruth hitting 60 in 154, or Simpson breaking in 16 games a record Brown set in 14. The data sets are dissimilar.

I think you'd have to actually get Hershel there
No video replay…surely he could squeeze it in amongst his MMA training, right?
I am not sure Richt thinks that way, but I think it would definitely provide a spark for your defense, which may or may not be needed going up against an offense that can’t seem to get out of its own way!
I am not very excited about the game being on Halloween. As a father of 2 young girls, we have a Halloween party and costume parade in our neighborhood which will start right around halftime.

Clearly, the SEC . . .
. . . gave ESPN its money’s worth today!

But I’m a Dawg, and have no room to judge!

You're right
I’m looking hard at Texas as my new No. 1 come Monday morning.

Georgia will have to run the ball effectively against Florida
in order to win. Special Teams will have to make a difference. And Tebow has hown he can be pressured and make bad decisions. We can pass much better than MSU, but without ball and field control and an effective run game it wont matter.

So the announcers know
that was a bad call giving UF a touchdown, and of course all those watching know, but does this mean another SEC officiating crew gets suspended?

They should, but probably not :(

Nothing will overcome the refs
Offsides on the KO…really. That must get called twice a season in all of the FBS.

Refs must be getting paid by the # of penalties they call........

It can't be that . . .
. . . or they wouldn’t have missed the flagrant hold that allowed Tennessee to maintain its touchdown drive.
Here’s a tip, ref: if you can see the defender’s jersey being pulled away from his body, it’s holding.

the scripture Tim Tebow had on his face was:
“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”
for those keeping track

Stuff like that is why I have to separate Tim Tebow . . .
. . . from the Tim Tebow hype. He genuinely does seem to be a good young man and a quality role model.
It’s the Thom Brennemans of the world who are so insufferable, but the problem isn’t Tebow, it’s the news media’s Tebow adulation. There’s a difference. Hate the game (or the narrative), not the player.

Agreed
I admire his devotion… how hard he plays… but there is way too much hype around him…
I did see some analysis on the wildcat in the pros maybe he WILL get drafted high enough to play in that spot… Urban sure isn’t doing him any favors in that regard..
after this year’s performance he SHOULD NOT get the heisman but it sounds like the press has already given it to him

Kyle
we are of like minds. I havent seen or heard one thing I dont like about Tebow. But the media’s desire to put him on the throne, rather than the saviour which he gives his faith -
you get it.

wathing the replay
MSU has a good coach – and as silly as it is – dedicated fans. I would not under estimate MSU in future years. They gave it hell with half the money. talent and hype. I honestly think with some depth they can move up – no longer the bottom 3 of the SEC

Agreed
It hasn’t necessarily shown up in the won-lost record, but, when you look at the situations each of them inherited, Dan Mullen clearly has been the most successful of the three rookie coaches in the SEC. We are rapidly approaching a point at which there could be eleven pretty decent teams in the league. The conference is down this year, but, a couple of years from now, the SEC could be frighteningly good everywhere outside of Nashville.

This, skigator93 . . .
. . . is one of the reasons we like you. Sometimes, the enemy of my enemy is my friend.
I don’t like Urban Meyer, but he’s one of those guys (like Nick Saban and Paul Johnson) who comes across as a jerk because he’s so intense about achieving perfection that he doesn’t have time for that politesse stuff.
For those sorts of fellows, being a jerk is a means; that’s very different from Lane Kiffin, for whom being a jerk is an end.
