So when did . . .

Paul Finebaum start writing the Dr. Saturday column? Seriously, I thought the bloggers, even the big name ones, were supposed to leave the hyperbole to the guys like Terence Moore. This is the kind of stuff I started reading Hinton’s stuff to avoid.

Exactly . . .

. . . although, to be fair, I think Matt may have been commenting on the absurdity of it.

The Phillip Fulmer comparisons are strictly nuts. Even leaving aside the inaccuracy of the observation about four years of also-ran status—-Georgia tied for first place in the division in 2007; would anyone call last year’s Texas Longhorns an also-ran?—-the fact is that Coach Fulmer posted two losing seasons with no bowl games in his last four years. Mark Richt has never had a losing season and has never missed out on a bowl game . . . yet folks have him entering 2010 on the hot seat? That’s just crazy.

Perhaps Matt was commenting on the absurdity of it all. . .

but that “four years of also-ran status” thing was the one line that really kind of got to me. Because, yeah, 2007 was really a bummer, what with the BCS bowl victory and the #2 national ranking. And I know Matt knows better than to use the old arbitrary cutoff date bit.

Though I think that most of us can agree that the fact that this “Fire Mark Richt” discussion is not only going on, but that the likes of Hinton have taken note, speaks quite poorly of a certain element of the Bulldog fanbase.

I'm not sure I'd call Hinton's take ridiculous. . .

The strict parallels with Fulmer (who did have losing/no bowl seasons) and Tuberville (whose relationship with the Auburn administration and fanbase was strained ever since the infamous plane trip) are less than apt, but it is hard to argue with Hinton’s larger point — i.e. that even Georgia’s fanbase can have a short memory when it seems the wheels have fallen off. I did not take Dr. Saturday to be saying Richt should be on the hot seat; only that the UGA faithful might well cry for his job if things don’t improve mightily. I can’t really argue with that observation.

The biggest difference between Tubby, The Great Pumpkin, and Mark Richt...

… is that neither of the first two coaches will ever… ever… win a personality contest. No one would accuse Phil Fulmer of being a generous, nice guy in a press conference (unless it was to announce a new Krispy Kreme restaurant opening), nor could anyone say that Tommy Tuberville was an incredibly genial man to the general public or the media.

Simply by the manner in which he has run his program, Mark Richt has sown political capital that neither Fulmer nor Tuberville could ever dream of having. Georgia has more than its fair share of crazy people in its fan base, but thankfully, those crazies aren’t big-time donors, and don’t have the ear of Damon Evans or Il Duce Michael Adams. Mark Richt’s faith, honesty, and upstanding (and outstanding) moral values are valued too highly by the important people in UGA athletics to let one very disappointing season like this permanently tarnish his image. To further drive my point home, it’s a similar situation to the reason Ray Goff was given 7 years, while Jim Donnan was only given 5. Nobody really liked Jim Donnan, even when he was being carried off the field after the Florida win in 1997. He was more like a means to an end.

Pardon me for swearing, but Jesus Christ, I just wish I could punch the living (redacted) out of people who take this type of story seriously. I’m already more cynical than I should be about the world, but morons who point to a 3-3 start that was entirely predictable at the beginning of the season as reason to put Richt on the hot seat… I can’t imagine a more raw deal than that. I mean, I know I was in the minority, but I predicted that we would have a 4-3 record going into the Florida game. (Granted, I got the exact teams we won and lost to wrong, but the record was right.)

I know someone’s going to argue with me about what I just said… I probably should go have a drink before replying, to them. I might just say something that’ll get me banned. For now, though, I’ll just say this… lay off the damn coach, guys.

One more thing...

… just to drive my personality comparison home. If Les Miles were to have another 7-5 season this year, his seat would be hotter than the andouille sausage served outside Tiger Stadium. If Nick Saban has a 6-6 season, he’ll be on the hot seat before the season is over. If Lane Kiffin had lost the Georgia game in the manner he won it, people would already be calling for his head en masse. Or if Bobby Petrino… well, never mind that one. All of those coaches come in a distant second to Mark Richt in a “good, honest, pleasant-to-deal-with guy doing it the right way” column.

That is why Mark Richt will still be around after the cajuns get tired of the Michigan man, the Tide roll Saban right out of town (you pick the crazy reason), Kiffin decides that maybe the NFL is his bag, baby, and Bobby Petrino decides that maybe (insert school name here) would be a pretty interesting coaching job.

As I posted Monday:

Monday mornings at my office usually involve SEC football discussions since my boss is a Bama fan. This morning all I could say was, we sucked. We’re hoping for a 6 win season. Please beat the pants off the rest of the SEC East.

My boss in turn informed me that even Bear Bryant had back to back six win season in 1969 & 1970 At one point during that, the players went to him & informed him they had lost confidence in his ability to coach. He agreed to think about it over night & the next day, he informed them that he had decided the problem was not his coaching, but rather their playing and promptly replaced them with freshmen.

In 1971, Alabama was 11-1 and 7-0 in SEC play. It was 1976 before Bama won less than 10 games and 1982 (his last season) was the first time Bama only won 8 games. From 1971 through 1975 it was only in 1972 did Bama fail to be undefeated in SEC Play.

All is not lost folks, even Bear Bryant had a couple of bad years.

Oh yeah, and Bear & Alabama won the Nat’l Championship in 1973, 1978 & 1979.

i am wearing out my line of "crazy talk"

so, to give credit, a spec ops heo pilot i workd with and a fine american said that alot.

Fire CMR is crazy talk beyond crazy talk. He had a 7 year contract. UGA would have to fire a damn succesfull coach paying a zillion dollars at a massive lost to the university. Then they would have to find and hire another coach at the cost of another zillion dollars. And, as Vine as alluded too, being head coach is more than wins and losses, you are the leading actor in a political drama, which CMR excells at. To simplify: CMR makes UGA look good off the field. Unless you are Alabama and dont care if the rest of the school doesnt get money in order to win a NC RIGHT NOW!, its not smart business, and its not smart politics. It isnt going to happen. If CMR losses every game this year he is still 2, maybe 3 years before let go. I can see UGA buying out 1 year of his contract, but not 3.

So, serously, the non alum, non booster fans that dont give a dime to the school can rant and blog away, they need to shut up and realize this is a business and support CMR – cause he aint going no where.

Now wait a minute tanker dear

I’m a non-alum!!! And I completely agree with you :)

this is the sad truth

We can argue whether or not it is fair, but the reality is that if there’s no noticeable improvement before the end of 2010 Richt’s job is in trouble. Hopefully Richt can manage some kind of turnaround this season. If this season goes down the drain it’s going to be VERY difficult to find quality assistants. If you’re a great coordinator why would you go to a school with a coach in the hot seat?

by mdhenshaw on Oct 15, 2009 10:27 AM EDT reply actions

trouble how? with who?

and you are talking next year as well, which is a long ways off in the hiring and firing of coaches. Alabama can probably get two new coaches by 2011 and before CMR would ever be let go. CMR isnt going anywhere unless he decides to himself. I dont want my alma mater paying off millions and then paying someone else millions over one bad season, thats bad business.
