Logan Gray
I am very disappointed in Joe Cox's performance this previous weekend. His overall game statistics were just terrible. I believe we give Logan Gray a shot, but Cox's play can be very bipolar. Logan Gray is very agile and has a descent arm with the build of a wide out. Therefore he has natural skill but his size can be a factor. If he had Cox's build, I believe he would and could be the starter.

Last weekend is a bad indicator of Cox's ability
Tennessee is still a great defensive team. Their problem (up until last weekend) is they couldn’t pass and couldn’t score.
skigator got onto me about not liking Cox
when he was offensive player of the week. The things I was watching for were different. He threw big passes to big receivers and it worked. But he was and is horrible about his progressions, he has no fakes or pumps or looks, he feet are horribly stuck to the ground. Everytime the pocket collapses or he gets pressure – you dont see him roll out or step up (Garcia did this beautifully against UGA), he continually has a deer in the head lights look. He does seem to make proper audibles based on Bobos bad input, i cant fault him for that. But overall, I dont think he gains us that much this year – where as, he hurts us terribly for next year.
Logan Gray may not find himself at QB, that remains to be seen. But I know this is college and guys are only around 3 years if they are good, sometimes 4. For a QB, you are only playing a couple of years in many cases. DJ Shockley’s success game from David Greene’s ball control and putting up enough of a score to get him some playing time. I don’t get to go to the practices or talk to CMR very much, so I dont know all the thinking, but I know starting Cox all year and playing him all game is probably gonig to result in a few more Ls, while really, really screwing up someone for next year. We have to find a way to get back up 1 and or 2 a quarter or more of snaps on a regular basis. This year, people are saying we are young and inexperienced (they said that last year, and many years before that as well), so, what are we going to say next year?
Joe Cox has really only struggled against very good defenses...
… his flu-ridden performance against Okie State notwithstanding.
But do you know who else has a great defense? Suddenly, I’m not so sure I want to make the trip down to Jax, after all…
I like Joe more than most....
But at this point I’m really questioning the decision to start a QB with deteriorating muscles/tendons in the shoulder of his throwing arm.
Coaches say it doesn’t impede his ability to throw.
Hard as it is to believe, I have no formal medical training but to paraphrase John Madden:
When your arm [is rotting from the inside out], the ball is not going to go where you want it to.
Behold, this year's College Gameday Sign:
"Joe Cox -- He circumcises ANGELS!"
I'm not sure I believe anything the Coaches say about our QB situation anymore...
Didn’t they say on the eve of the opener at Okie State that he only had had a mild flu bug, was practically recovered from it and flown out there on a separate plane just as a precaution? Then we get all these details a week later: he’d lost ten pounds, was gasping for breath on the sideline as the game wore on. Utterly stupid to keep him in past the first half, not fair to the team or to him. Then this continuing business with the shoulder….NOT good. There is something almost willful about the way they’ve handled all this from the get-go. Putting Gray in to catch punts, or inserting him for isolated plays at QB when the opponent knows exactly what play he’s been given to run. Finally he actually gets a whole series in garbage time at Tennessee when the whole team is so demoralized about the course of the game that they could only have wanted it to be over as quickly as possible. Something smells here. BADLY. Cox is a fine, loyal Dawg but he is not an SEC-level QB. Almost half the season is done, he has certainly been given a chance. By NO means is he solely to blame for what has gone wrong with our O – but at best he is woefully limited in terms of being able to mitigate it. His picks are just nuts. We wouldn’t have been chewing our nails just before Curran’s big play against the Gamecocks if a pick-6 hadn’t allowed them to pull within 4 points of us. We need to give some PT to Gray or Murray and try to lay a foundation for next year. No matter how much it hurts.

when someone says “i’m not sure I believe anything…” i am with you and listening. I am not buying anything they are selling about anything at UGA football this year. I think the truth will be known somewhere between Jan 2010 and August 2010, and we still may not know. But I have no idea why Cox needs to play when he aint got it and a loss is a loss – at least someone could learn something. Maybe Gray sucks? That would be an interesting recruiting bust. Maybe they just want to keep him healthy – or dont want to make him gunshy? who knows – but we probably wont.
I am redundant I know, but I am not going to stop saying it – I am way more worried about next year than this one. IF this is a so called rebuilding year and we arent rebuilding…then what?
when everyone knows it's broke
and it’s got to be rebuilt the only question is will you rebuild today or will you rebuild tomorrow?
We need to start rebuilding now
and get another QB some experience for next year.
Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind.
Maybe he isn't ready
I don’t watch practices either, so I have no idea whether Gray would be better than Cox. What if he is way worse? What if he throws tons of picks and the Dawgs lose more games like they did against UT – what if he leads them to a loss against Vandy? Maybe Richt and Bobo are protecting Gray as well as themselves by not playing him.
If you watched Garcia the past couple years, you would have noticed that he was not just “not good,” he was terrible. This is Cox’s first year as a starter and I understand it is his last year as a Dawg, but just maybe he gives UGA the best chance to win right now. Starting lesser guys to “let them get their lumps” doesn’t always result in future improvement – it can also lead to a guy losing his confidence and transferring elsewhere.
If Gray comes in and is terrible – how long before you start calling for Aaron Murray to play? A lot of UGA’s offensive woes right now lie in poor offensive line protection and lack of running game (unheard of at “Halfback U”). Maybe even Sam Bradford would look terrible in that situation?
i hear you Skigator, I am not calling for Gray to start even though I kinda sound like it at times. I just want him to get some solid snaps and series. I imagine Cox probably is a good bit better than Gray. I just dont think playing Cox all game everygame gets us anywhere next year.
I agree with you there
Nothing Cox does can help you next season.
I think the problem is yall have had way too many close games. I think if you would get a good lead on somebody, that you might see Gray get some snaps. I know backups sometimes play when your on the short end of a blowout, but that is usually just to protect the starter, as throwing a youngster into the teeth of a D that has dominated your starter also does little to help the younger QB along.
huh?
What is this “lead” concept of which you speak?
