Its time we let Mark Richt go.
I'm tired of seeing our team be a second rate team. We need to find a couch that will take us to a title, not a frecking bowl game.Who cares about a bowl game, nobody remembers them.I was a big fan of Richt but look a the calls he has mad in the last 2 years.we were ranked no.1 and then what made us look like fools to everyone else. Why would u stars Cox when you know he sucks, why not start a freshman, and let him get some time under his belt and then he would be great next year. With the way we played today our whole coaching staff should be fired. If Georgia want to be 9-3 or 10-2 then Mark Richt is the guy but if we want to get a title then we need some change.

I got a good couch at Rooms-To-Go . . .
but I don’t think it’s won any titles. But on the subject of coaches, name me one program that has consistently gone 9-3 or 10-2, fired the coach who got them to that level, then turned around and won a national title. Go ahead. I’m waiting.
Now guess how many schools have fired the coach who got them to that level then regressed? I can name a few if you’d like.
And while we’re naming names, who’s the coach we hire to replace Mark Richt who’s demonstrably better and is available to take the job. Who you got?

I know you were making a rhetorical point, but I'll help.
Nebraska – Frank Solich
Michigan – Lloyd Carr
Auburn – Tommy Tuberville (Though the jury is still out on that one. Kyle hates Auburn.)
And, to a lesser extent, Hayden Fry at Iowa, June Jones at Hawai’i (who was practically run off when he showed the slightest interest in another job), and David Cutcliffe at Ole Miss.
The only actual answer to your question I can think of, MaconDawg, is Ohio State, who fired John Cooper to pick up Jim Tressel.

On second thought...
… Frank Solich isn’t a good example, because he’s not the one who got them there… Tom Osborne did. The other examples are accurate, though.

ditto
CMR has EARNED our trust. He knows his integrity is on the line. He knows he is responsible and changes need to happen. There’s no cause for calling for his ousting at this point in time.

No, it isn't
The probems this team has can probably be fixed by getting a new OC, DC, and special teams coach (not to mention some talent upgrades at a couple of key positions, but the replacements are waiting in the wings). Now, if Richt refuses to make the necessary changes based on cronyism, then we will have a big issue. But not until that point.

Richt shouldn't go.....
1. Brian VanGorder was our D-Coordinator from 2001-2004, and our defense was spectacular.
2. During that same period, our offense (led by David Greene) was a pretty solid offense. 3. Mike Bobo took over O-Coordinator in 2006, and Willie Martinez took over as D-Coordinator in 2005.
Since these two transitions, I really believe we have steadily declined. Sure, our records have resulted in ten wins, typically.
I just think we are losing the games that matter….ie. Tech, Florida, etc.
I vote for Richt to take over offensive calls, and find somebody, anybody, to replace Willie. I would also not mind Logan Gray starting from here on out. Joe Cox is embarrassing.

i think he a good coach he did alot for the program as far as winning games but he aint beat fla consistantly i dont know about yall but as a ga fan thats big to me hes got to step up and take over the play callin cause anybody that watched fsu in the 90s nows hes a good cord and the biggest problem is willie hes got to go and if they was to fire richt it might not hurt to try to lure brian van gorder back

no one is beating Florida consistently - hey just won two national championships
and a heisman in the last years. and Van Gorder isnt coming back.

Hey Helton -
why dont you name one available, obtainable head coach to replace Richt with. Crazy talk.
Accuse him of not being as in the weeds as the leader. Accuse him of holding onto coaches for too long. Accuse him of being slow to change this year.
The rest is just crazy talk.

Amen Tanker....
I actually have a “friend” (who graduated with me at UF) who thinks we need to fire Urban Meyer. After questioning his sanity, I have asked him on numerous occasions who he thinks we should hire to replace a coach who has won 2 national titles in 4 years. He has yet to answer, meaning he thinks the only guy better is himself.
That being said, if you watched the game tonight against LSU, you might tend to agree that our level of talent might actually be getting held back by some inept coaching on teh offensive side of the ball. I think Meyer is fine (obviously), but I think Addazio (OC who took over for Mullen) might be in over his head a bit. Has the 4th and inches hard snap without running a play ever acually worked? in the history of college football?!!?

Skigator -
if T Kyle King was to ever have an honorary opponent able to post on his blog main page – I would vote for you. You have consistently been here through the years, and know the hard core posters here. YOu have even argued in favor of georgia against georgia fans here.
Please keep coming here and posting your thoughts – they are more than welcome in my book.
and – please tell me why Myer is trying to make out with Tebow on the field, just saying. )

Good point, tankertoad
After the way some opposing fans come around here just looking to be nasty, skigator93’s consistent reasonableness is even more appreciated.

The fourth and inches hard snap never works on the field
but it makes me feel smarter when I yell “Don’t jump! Don’t jump!”, so I say keep it!

actually, no disrespect to Skigator, i know what he is saying
but it did work for David Greene a lot.
by tankertoad on Oct 11, 2009 2:46 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I must have missed those games with Green...
I think the better play would have been after the defense realized we weren’t snapping the ball and everyone started jumping around and cheering, to have the QB tap the center on the back or give him some sort of signal and then actually snap the ball – it would have been an easy 5 yards as the D had already backed off!!
by skigator93 on Oct 11, 2009 11:42 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
it was kinda lame at times Skigator
but David Greene was the master of the hard count. I think the difference was he did it on 1st down a lot making for 1st and 5s, where Flordia tries it on 4th down – making it a rather obvious ploy.
It will be interesting to see if UGA bites on it with all our penalty problems.
by tankertoad on Oct 12, 2009 2:59 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Ahhh
It doesn’t count unless it is on 4th down. A lot of teams have success with hard counts on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. I am talking about when it is 4th and 1 and you try it as if to say “we don’t believe we can gain a yard on you the real way, so we’re just going to line up and try to make you jump.” I’ve seen teams try that tons of times and never with any success, although I am sure it has worked for somebody at some point!

Not one year since Richt has been the coach has Ga beaten the Volunteers, Gators or Auburn Tigers in the same season. Last season Ga was preseason number one and finished with three looses.
Mike BoBo was a crappy QB and is an even crappier offensive coordinator. Matinez has only shown flashes of competency.
In more than 20 years of Ga football do I recall seeing such a poorly coached and poorly disciplined team. The team ranks in the last tier in take aways and penalties. Both of those relate to discipline. Many of their blown defensive schemes are due to players not staying at home. Goes back to discipline.
I’m all for Richt staying if both BoBo and Martinez go.

again -
Florida has been a powerhouse for a decade. SInce we are talking Eastern Division – who has beaten the Vols, Gators, the tigers and throw in the Dawgs if you are one of those teams all in the same year lately, minus Florida?
NO UGA COACH HAS EVER ONE THIS MANY GAMES IN THIS TIMESPAN AS MARK RICHT – and doing it against the highest level of competition ever.
We do need some coaching adjustments. We also have never had this much talent. I concede the penalties and TOs are a major issue, I been saying that all year. I will also say, after watching about 20 games in the last 3 weeks there is a VAST difference on PFs between UGA and every other team. I just watch Tebow taunt with a cell phone hand “call me”, and no flag. That would be 15 yards against UGA.
YOu simply can not compare a mediorcre CMR team to any Ray Goff Team and most anything under Donnan.
more crazy talk responding to a crazy post with a bad argument and no evidence in the first place
by tankertoad on Oct 10, 2009 9:56 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Wait a second on the whole “crazy talk” comment. If you want the program to progress then Ga is going to have to beat some combination of the Gators, Vols and Auburn. Not saying all three in any one given season but consistently beat two out of the three. If that doesn’t happen then the chances of winning the SEC East will be very slim. Now it looks like Ga will be playing LSU on a regular basis and Saben has Alabama rolling. You can be Petrino will be a power at Arkansas.
Noone is comparing a CMR team to a Goff or Donnan team. It is about progressing the program, winning big games and competing for for SEC titles and National Championships.
Tankertoad, do you want the team to get better or stay like it is? Who cares about past records or wins because they don’t count for anything anymore. Thinking it’s a victory to be better than a Donnan or Goff team is to willingly accept being no better than second or third in the SEC East.

If you expected a team losing a #1 overall pick and first round RB wasn't going to take a step back
the you are not realistic. I challenge anyone who wants to fire Richt to name a suitable replacement. I will call touche’ if a realistic replacement is actually named….

Definitely not even close to wanting to fire Mark Richt
but….and as I type this I’ve already rebuked my own idea….but heck I’ll throw it out there to play devil’s advocate….
….Turner Gill. Yeah, I said it.

One-hit wonder
Wanting Turner Gill in 2009 is like wanting Gary Barnett in 1995 . . . which we did, and which Vince Dooley shrewdly defused.

As long as we're selectively choosing opponents as the basis for quoting statistics...
… in 2007 Georgia beat Alabama, Florida, Auburn, and Georgia Tech all in the same year for the first time since the SEC Championship year of 1976.
… from 2001-2007, Georgia tied its longest series winning streak over Georgia Tech by winning 7 consecutive games. This includes the worst beatdown ever handed to the Golden Tornado by the Red and Black… a 51-7 whipping in Athens in 2002.
I’m too tired right now to come up with more lies, damn lies, and statistics… but you get the idea, I’m sure.

Regarding the schedule...
it may seem that we play LSU on a regular basis because we’ve faced them the past two years, but that is not the case. Auburn is our only opponent from the western division who we face every year. Other than Auburn, we face two other western opponents each year in a (generally) cyclical fashion. Example: Alabama away in 2007, at home in 2008; LSU away in 2008, at home in 2009; Arkansas away in 2009, at home in 2010…etc.

Solution.....
I want to keep Richt. I like Richt, but I liked him better when he made the offensive play calls. I don’t want Bobo or Martinez. Richt replaces Bobo for play-calling again, and anyone would be better than Martinez.

As an Alabama fan...
… I hope y’all keep Richt around. And especially Martinez.

The shot at Willie Martinez is deserved
A reasonable comparison of Mark Richt’s and Nick Saban’s career achievements does not justify a shot at Coach Richt, who has as many SEC championships and 13-1 seasons to his credit as Coach Saban.

This is nothing new
We never improved last year on defense. It has carried right over to this year. There is absolutely no basis for assuming there will be any improvement for the rest of this year or next year unless changes are made. Not the head coach.
Calling Kirby. Calling Will. Your Alma Mater needs you.
Richt is our coach and I stand behind him 100%. Today. However, if we don’t make a move in the offseason concerning our DC, I will certainly amend that previous number. I don’t believe it will come to that.
Willie is a good man and I believe he loves UGA. But he and we are regressing. Defense wins championships. They take the ball away, create short-field scoring opportunities, and make average offenses better. We haven’t had a great good average defense in a long time. The talent is there, the guidance is not.
Directional kickoffs: More fun than a bag of snakes.

To all the people who don’t want to change coaches.Let me bring to your att. that our neighbor Tenn.coach Fulmer changed everybody around him a still there was no improvement. So do we keep fighting to keep him here hoping that he changes the OC and DC.Or go ahead and make some really big choices. I like to hear some repons to this. Go Dawgs

That's one example . . .
. . . but there are plenty of others that go in the opposite direction. With the exception of the Tony Franklin hire, Tommy Tuberville did himself a lot of favors, and did his program a lot of good, by hiring Al Borges, Gene Chizik, and Will Muschamp. Steve Spurrier won a national championship by replacing Ron Zook with Bob Stoops. Charlie Strong and Ellis Johnson have made big splashes as defensive coordinators in the league. While Mark Richt has never fired an assistant, he upgraded his staff by hiring Tony Ball and Stacy Searels.
Those are just a handful of examples off the top of my head, but the point is that there are many historical instances of head coaches “reinventing” themselves successfully by hiring new coordinators.
