Georgia Bulldogs at Tennessee Volunteers Game Day Open Comment Thread

Georgia Bulldogs at Tennessee Volunteers, Oct 10, 2009 12:21 PM EDT

We don't have to go very far back in history to find any number of clashes between the Georgia Bulldogs and the Tennessee Volunteers which had real bearing on the division race, the conference standings, and the national rankings. While this is not one of those games, it remains a consequential showdown for both teams, each of which potentially needs a win today to keep its season from spiraling out of control.

Knoxville has been the site of one of Mark Richt's greatest victories (in 2001) and one of his most disheartening defeats (in 2007). While we're in the process of finding out which way this game is going to go, please feel free to share your thoughts, reactions, impressions, exhortations, frustrations, and (I hope) celebrations in the comments below.

Go 'Dawgs!

Which Team will show up today?

A) The Offensive Powerhouse that doesn’t have a secondary?
B) The schizophrenic team that doesn’t have an offense or defense?
C) The complete team that has taken 5 weeks to develop?

Here is hoping for option C!!

What about the LG whiffing on the block to let the DT get in Cox’ face to force the tipped INT?

Joe is just a little too short..

…causes problems with finding passing lanes AND seeing over rushing 300 lb DL’s in his face. This is what I think has been his problem with bad intermediate passes all year.

Defense can win games...

Ask Ty Willingham. Our D can’t win games.

by dawgblogit on Oct 10, 2009 1:55 PM EDT up reply actions

He obviously

Has nothing to do with the first four. On TO’s, he has nothing to do with the ones we give up, but we’re forcing none against an interception prone quarterback, and when we turn it over, the other team almost always scores even when it has to go over fifty yards like today. Do we have other problems, yes, but the D is consistently bad. Today, TN is looking like a finely tuned offensive machine which is ridiculous because we know they are anything but that.

At least our all or nothing special teams is producing more all than nothing today, but we know there’s more excitement coming in that department.

What bothers me most is how wide open the wide outs are. Our coverage is a complete mess. It’s time to stop making excuses for WM, he is a disaster and has been for some time.

by VamoultrieDawg on Oct 10, 2009 2:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Good discussion, but

We have so many problems. All of these still keeps my believe a full house cleaning is in order. Willie is horrible, but CMR is the lead dawg. CMR wasn’t even wearing a heAdset the first defensive Series, which is hard for me to understand. The D is horrible, but we got problems every where and they do not seem to get addressed from week to week

I thought we’d be able to adjust, but our corners are reactive, not pre emtive. Is that a word? Kyle? Help? Bueller? Funk? Wagnalls?

We made good defensive adjustments at halftime last week.

They lasted almost until the end of the game. Maybe Crompton will wake up sometime next half and remember he is not Peyton Manning.

I just don't see genuine anger or frustration from the coaches or players considering everything that's going on

Its the big problem with Richts even keeled manner. There needs to be a little passion and anger to do something to fix what’s going on.

I Hate this soft zone! Read: fire CWM. But the penalities, the ST, the pass protect, the no run, and well, even the D fall at the feet of the head coach. Until CMR gets some balls and makes some changes i am not solely blaming CWM. We are BOTTOM OF THE CONFERENCE IN EVERY CATEGORY.

As I stated in a fanpost or somewhere

I thought we would be better than this this year. However, I am not concerned about this year as much as I am abou the future. The lack of adjustments through this half the season and the inablity to get a back up quarterback a full quarter of football really concern me. I dont buy the “we are young” this year arguments: we said that last year and in many other years. This is college football. You are most always going to have a larger pool of underclassman. You need the handful of seniors and coaches to bring them up. It is likely (I dont wish for it, jsut being realistic) we are going to lose several more games this year. But the question is, can we learn from it? can we caoch up? Can we make changes and show some flexibility? Can we coach at the players level? Can we scrap the play calling on both sides of the ball if it isnt working and go to something that doesnt work? Can we stop the penalties and develop a run game of some sort to free up the play action? Those are hte things i would like to see flushed out over the next games.

I am still a huge CMR fan and a bulldog fan. I actually admired CMR for many years for his ability to go with what worked versus what he may have wanted to do. I would like to see a retun to that flexibility.

see my way clear to offer up my place as the meeting place, but I would have to warn you both of a couple things:
1. I really do live in Podunk, Oklahoma. Seriously, there is NOT a stop light in the whole town.
2. Oklahoma beer is 3.2% – you might want to bring it with.
3. All but 2 of my neighbors are at least 60+ yrs old, maybe 80+ – I will have to notify the local PD that I’m having company to avoid their visit. That may or may not keep you from getting pulled over on the way into town.
4. My Great Pyrenees is a bit dog aggressive, but she settles down after an hr or two. We could probably put one dog outside, one inside and all would be mostly well.

Its that simple. All facets of the game are well below sub par. Oh well. I think we may have just reached the tipping point in terms of coaching staff and some starters. It isn’t going to get any better this season.

by SG Standard on Oct 10, 2009 3:33 PM EDT reply actions

And the thing is

with the recurring problems, the coaches act like it doesn’t matter!

I really like Coach Richt and think he can win us a NC here, but his passiveness when dealing with the penalty problem is FLIPPING (censoring myself again here) ridiculous. Really. He just shrugs it off.

The announcers mentioned today that either us or Tennessee (I think us) had however many yards of penalties last year. Hearing and seeing the total yardage for penalites, he then said “They could’ve used those yards huh?”

I don’t really think of all the penalties yards like that, but it’s true.

It’s just frustrating for all kinds of things. You can focus on the bad tackling, the penalties, the offensive playcalling, whatever. There’s just too many things that are recurring problems. Getting real old. I don’t mind it if we have a bunch of young players and we see progress…but we don’t. And we don’t even try new things to get the ball rolling on the progress. Ugh.

“We don’t”…see progress. We do have young players, but our experiences players are doing the same crap. Rashad Jones has gotten worse it seems like since the middle of last year.

Our young players seem to be some of the only sparks, but their mistakes are the same mistakes our older players are making.

by UgaBulldog14 on Oct 10, 2009 3:34 PM EDT up reply actions

the “young players” argument has been made seemingly every year, it doesnt carry water this year. Its college, you are going to have more underclassmen than upper classmen.

by tankertoad on Oct 10, 2009 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions

This is the second year in a row that we have seemingly gotten worse as the season has progressed.

That makes no sense whatsoever.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, a lack of discipline!

Until we find a way to instill discipline and break our opponents. the Red and Black will not be feared, we will be beaten like we have been this year, over and over again. The team really has taken on Richt’s laid back Joe Cool persona. CMR is a great man, but he’s gotta find that guy with “Patton/Erk-esque” mentality that will make people more willing to let their own momma down than that man, whoever they may be. This post may be harsh, but I think it is exactly what his team needs. A kick in the a#@ that will turn out to be the shot in the arm we need. Go Dawgs!

I think Erk Russell could have kicked Clint Eastwood and John Wayne's butts with a corn cob and one hand tied behind his back. GATA!

by AeroDawg on Oct 10, 2009 3:33 PM EDT reply actions

I think you're saying 2 different things there...

If Richt is “Joe Cool” and we’ve taken on his persona, doesn’t that make us extremely disciplined (even-keeled, level-headed, etc)? We don’t want discipline, we want fire.

by Sparrow on Oct 10, 2009 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions

You're both right, sorta

I think both are needed. Richt is calm, cool & collected, he’s the no-penalties, even-keeled guy. Erk is fire, GATA all of those things. This team has neither of those attributes and desperately needs both.

I'm rethinking the long-term impact of THE CELEBRATION

A lot was written this week about the refs holding a grudge against us ever since TC, which I thought was a little off. But the reaction in the press, and even from some UGA faithful, hurt CMR and I think he went into a “bunker” mentality. While that helped the ‘07 squad, it’s now seems he can’t see the forest for the trees about his own program. It’s internal paranoia and does not create an atmosphere for the critical self-analysis he must take with coaches and players.

by ausdawg85 on Oct 10, 2009 3:38 PM EDT reply actions

Well

if I had to trade The Celebration to win some games this year, I wouldn’t do it.

That was probably the greatest moment in Georgia football since I’ve been alive.

LMFAO @ the clueless Florida players and fans when we did that! Priceless! Effing priceless!

by UgaBulldog14 on Oct 10, 2009 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

But I am surprised that the continued celebration by Tennessee was not called… at some point. Even if there was a slight time out there should have been something. It was obviously celebrating their success.

by dawgblogit on Oct 10, 2009 3:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Was there for celebration. Wouldn't trade it for anything.

There will be good times again. Was also there when Alabama blanked us in Hines Ward’s first start (?) at QB. Thought we would never be good again after that. Can still remember thinking we would NEVER get to SEC championship.

by hbtd on Oct 10, 2009 3:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

The Celebration was the first and only Cocktail Party I’ve been to. I can make the trips to Athens but rarely get to go to JAX. Fanflippingtastic!

by UgaBulldog14 on Oct 10, 2009 3:44 PM EDT up reply actions

it does somehow seem to be a turning point

I noticed some of our players today holding up their hands like " i didnt do it" which means they are scared of the refs. That is bad. I think the only solution is very hard, cool, no celebration games and just prove we can act like we been there before.

by tankertoad on Oct 10, 2009 3:41 PM EDT up reply actions

To clairify my point...

…I LOVED that CMR fired-up his troops that day. But he did not like the sharp rebuke he got from the press. Ever since, he says little publicly that is meaningful, and it seems if he has turned-off listening…to anybody. Now, I pray he never listens to fans, but there are plenty of knowledgeable folks who have his ear and are pointing-out our weaknesses. Yet there seems to be no response from CMR…it’s a “bunker” mentality and keeping him from critical assessment of what’s going on around him.

More proof of this theory?….Remember the play-calling/clock management problems in his early years? He listened, evaluated, and agreed to be more of a gameday CEO rather than lost in just one aspect of the game. He adjusted because he was willing to be self-critical. I don’t see that now…more of chip on his shoulder attitude.

by HEYJUDE on Oct 10, 2009 3:39 PM EDT reply actions

No Excuse.

There are down years. You have injuries to key players. You have academic ineligibilities that trip you up. You have game mechanics screw you over… bad call here, bad luck there.

With an established coaching staff. With numerous highly rated recruiting classes.

There is no reason, no excuse to be 3 and 3 at this point. This season’s success or the lack there is falls squarely on CMR. I am and will always be a fan.

But when you lead an organization of individuals you need to be sure to have the Staff that can coach the recruits, and the recruits that can work in the system.

When that goes out of line, you have issues. Its time to fix those issues.

Georgia looked like a team on crutches that just came out of the hospital room. Just downright miserable

Georgia is on crutches…that’s for certain with Bobo being one of the crutches and Martinez being the other one…the heavier one. You might add Fabris on there for the head bandage, but the special teams were the only bright point today. If Georgia ever would have any success in the future, these crutches have to come off

by thefirstgenesis on Oct 10, 2009 4:03 PM EDT reply actions

crutches hold someone up that is injured. I see our Assistant Coaches as more like carrying around three bowling balls – hard to carry and pulling us down.

I can only think, Dear Football Gods, please help CMR have the courage to do what has to be done. If losing to LSU and UT back to back and a 3-3 record doesnt get his attention – i am not sure what will. I dont want to ride out the storm. We can get a new ST coach now. CMR can put on the headset and start play calling now. CMR can tell CWM to stop the soft zone now.

I have to believe that

CMR’s personal integrity will carry the day. Before he closes his eyes tonight, he will have in mind what direction he will go. He will sleep on it, he will pray about it, but before practice tomorrow he will be certain about what immediate changes he will make.

Worst loss of CMR reign ...

Given the losses we has on the offense at the end of last season I’m not surprised we’re struggling on offense. However, this should officially be the end of CWM on defense. He was given a reprieve last season b/c of all the injuries, but now it’s obvious he just doesn’t know what he’s doing. He has a million excuses. I know he’s a close friend of Richt, but if he really is a good friends he should resign.

This is a rebuilding year on offense. We shoul really think about putting Murray in at QB. This season is officially over. It’s time to start playing for 2010.

by mdhenshaw on Oct 10, 2009 4:26 PM EDT reply actions

Re: Murray playing.

Not really an option, he’s out of action with a bum throwing arm and has been for several weeks. That’s one reason we’ve not seen more of Logan Gray. If anything happens to him then Joe Cox has no backup who’s even taken a collegiate snap.

Read this on another blog:

Jim Donnan 1997-2000: 35-13

End of 2000: Fired.

Mark Richt 2006-2009: 33-12

End of 2009: ???

by Muckbeast on Oct 10, 2009 10:30 PM EDT reply actions

Jesus Mary and Joseph

I would say that this particular statistic doesn’t deserve the dignity of a response, but since such a statement is, in and of itself, a response, let me point out the following:

- 1997-2000 comprised 80% of Jim Donnan’s tenure at Georgia. 2006-2009 comprises 44% of Mark Richt’s tenure at Georgia so far.

- The 20% of Donnan’s UGA career that you’re ignoring was his worst year at UGA in terms of record (5-6). The 56% of Richt’s record you’re ignoring have been his best years at UGA to date.

- During the years of 1997-2000, Georgia attended 2 Outback Bowls and played Virginia twice in the other 2 bowls they attended (Peach & Oah’u). During the years of 2006-2009, Georgia attended a Sugar Bowl, a Capital One Bowl, and a Peach-Fil-A Bowl, where they played Virginia Tech, which I’m sure we’ll all agree is a significant upgrade in opponent from Virginia. (The 2009 bowl game is yet to be determined, but one thing is for sure – we won’t be playing 2-3 Virginia.)

- The 2009 season is only half over. Therefore, the record analysis is entirely incomplete.

- What you’re doing here is pulling out some random, meaningless statistic from a random timeframe and attempting to make it appear as though it’s relevant to the current situation at Georgia. It is not.

In summary, this statistic is as meaningless as Kanye West’s AA sponsor.
