Breaking News Out Of Athens . . .

The word going around is that Matt Stafford and Knowshon Moreno will both be announcing today that they will apply for the NFL Draft. Details? None. Reliability? Little, but with a fair degree of truthiness. Just keep an eye on the news, and feel free to react (or overreact) in the comments. We'll be back with more later . . .

(Don't) Go 'Dawgs!!!

Edit: Chip Towers of the AJC has talked to Matt's father John, who is driving to Athens for the announcement, and says there will be a press conference at 3:00 p.m. I tend to think that Mr. Stafford would not drive all the way from Dallas for his son to announce he's not going anywhere, but that's just me.

Who is that WR recruit

that said he is waiting to see what Stafford does before he decides which school he commits to?

I’m very against all this crap with high-school athletes, but from what I remember he was a solid recruit. And I was taking his comment to mean if Stafford stays he’s coming to UGA.

Anyone taking bets on this? I’m betting Stafford says, Know-Mo goes.

I think . . .

the WR you’re thinking of may be Cameron Kenney, a JUCO prospect originally from Atlanta who had committed to Auburn before the Great Ears Exodus of 2008. I don’t think he’s our top wide receiver prospect (that’s Marlon Brown from Memphis), nor am I certain he was really coming here anyway.

And I’m betting both are gone. The average career length of an NFL tailback is roughly 2-3 years. Any year you spend getting tackled by Brandon Spikes and Ricky Jean-Francois for free is a year that you’re not getting tackled by other guys for seven figures.

And again, I just don’t see Matt’s father driving from Texas to be there when his son announces that he’s not going anywhere, except back to his dorm room to whip Kris Durham on the X-Box. I take that as a strong sign that he’s gone.

Good luck in the NFL guys, thanks for the memories!

Stafford and Moreno both gave us some great memories. They will be missed. I think Moreno is definitely making the right choice, and possibly Stafford as well. Look at Pollack’s injury. If that had happened in college, no signing bonus payday, and no ability to say “I played in the NFL.”

… however …

Is there anyone else with a strange, hard to explain, sense of relief? The last 3 years have been, imho, the most frustrating of Richt’s 8 year tenure. Something just hasn’t been right. I am NOT blaming Stafford or Moreno whatsoever. I am just pointing something out. Maybe people expected those guys to do it all, maybe Georgia was just another school to them – they loved it, but didn’t die for it, or maybe they didn’t have an “it” factor in the locker room, or who knows what. But something was never right the last 3 years. While it may have nothing to do with those two players, I think the overall “weirdness” of the last 3 UGA teams makes it so I’m not as bummed as I thought I would be.

I am actually a little relieved that we are finally going to move forward into the next era.

The David Greene (w/ DJ Shockley) era was awesome.

The Stafford (w/ Tereshinski/Cox) era….. not so much.

Here’s to our next era being more like Greene’s and a little less like Stafford’s.

Richt just said at the press conference

that “someone is going to have to knock Cox out of # 1.” I look forward to the change__not to dis’ Stafford, but I look forward to someone who may not have all the physical tools but is a WINNER! As in Greene or Belue or Lastinger__I think sometimes too much emphasis is placed on “athletic ability” rather than “football savvy or ability.” Moreno had both__Stafford, I’m not so sure. I hope both have great pro careers and, if I could have had my choice, it would be for Moreno to stay and Stafford to go, if only one had to go. I hope the ECI guy can get it done or Samuel steps up__I ain’t sold on King’s ability to be a starter in the SEC.

I think we'll see a little bit of Greene-Shockley '02

Cox is the starter, period, but Logan Gray will get his series.

As much as I love Stafford, what Hal Holbrook said to Clint Eastwood in “Magnum Force” applies to quarterbacks: “A man’s got to know his limitations.” Tankertoad frequently points out how seldom Stafford was successful when he threw 30 or more yards downfield; there’s a lot to be said for long, methodical, time-consuming drives made up of high-percentage passes, good decisionmaking, and the patented David Greene Romulan cloaking device hidden ball play run to perfection.

A little bit of leadership in the locker room would do the ‘Dawgs a world of good, too . . . and it was, after all, Joe Cox who said that, if they couldn’t score 14 points, they didn’t deserve to wear G’s on their helmets.

Finally, if Joe C. leads Georgia to victory over South Carolina, there’ll be no stopping the “Our Cox Beat Your Cocks” bumper stickers.
