Grading Hatred: Which Team Is Georgia's Biggest Football Rival?
Recently, vineyarddawg contributed a fanpost and, in the comment thread that followed, JeffCoDawg asked a reasonable question about the level of vitriol I reserve especially for Auburn. I offered an answer in good faith, with which donkeydawg concurred, but NCT, vineyarddawg, and JRL made their own cases for various rivals, which prompted me to pose the question on the main page:
You can answer the first part of the question in the poll below and respond to the second part of the question in the comments. Have at it, Bulldog Nation, but, please, keep your hate the way Bill Cromartie preferred it: not just old-fashioned, but also clean.
Go ‘Dawgs!

I voted Tech, but I hate Auburn
I grade Tech as our biggest rival because it is imperative that we beat them to maintain state braggin’ rights. However, being from Columbus, I echo the geographic arguments for Tiger hatred.
Florida
I voted Florida but I doubt they think it is a rivalry give our most recent two decades. I also have little hope that we will beat them any time soon given this coaching staff and their record. 2 out of 8 is not good. We have the talent but for some reason we find a way to lose. Go dawgs.
Can't speack for all Gators, but
I still consider our 2 biggest rivals FSU and UGA.
Tennessee is probably a distant third, LSU is 4th and Auburn would have been 5th, except the scheduling change a few years back wrecked that rivalry.
I think the true measure of the biggest rival is the answer to the question – if you were to finish 1-11, who would you want the single victory to be against?
That's the million dollar question
My 1-11 would include a victory over Florida. Hopefully that would be one of the twelve losses they had that year.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
For me
It would be UGA – but only because I am an Atlantan. I think most Gators would still say FSU.
Yeah
I live in Atlanta and my firm employs mostly Gators and Bulldogs. You can only imagine how hostile it gets around Halloween every year. I still haven’t stopped receiving emails from one of my partners entitled “49-10”.

Florida
Seems like geography and age are important determiners, so here’s mine: I’m from middle Georgia (so no proximity to any out of state rivals) and I’m 22. And here’s why Florida is it for me:
- Can’t be Tech because I don’t take them seriously. They’re my favorite team to make fun of, and the one I hate losing to most (so if we went 1-11, that might be the one I’d want as the "1") but we’ve been so dominant during my lifetime, it’s hard to get very amped up. My family didn’t go to a ton of Georgia games when I was growing up, but we went to a lot of the Tech-UGA games (even some in Atlanta) and the three-in-a-row streak was rough. But sandwiched between two 7-gamers for us, so I’m over that now. Honestly, at no point in our close games over the past few years with them did I ever think we’d lose, up until about :40 left this last time. But everybody has a bad day, and it won’t happen often. So it’s not Tech.
- Can’t be Clemson — we don’t play them enough. I understand why it might be for a different generation, but now, nope.
- Can’t be Auburn. I would never root for Tech or Florida under any circumstances. (That includes both the ‘06 and ’08 title games. There, I said it.) But I could definitely see myself rooting for Auburn in the right circumstances. I hope we beat the hell out of them every year, of course, but it’s not hate so much as they’re a conference rival and we ought to beat ’em.
- It could be Tennessee. In fact, when I graduated (May ’08), I would have said it WAS Tennessee for me. UT was the only school we played more than once that we had a losing record to while I was in college (look it up) and those were rough games — the ’04 letdown after the LSU win, the ’06 comeback that killed us for a full year, and the ’07 game that looked like an ’06 repeat and ended up keeping us out of the SEC and maybe National title games. I hate Tennessee. And the series with Florida seemed to be changing. But this year, things changed — UT sucked something awful while UF surged in obnoxious fashion. So, meet the new boss, same as the old boss…
- It’s Florida. It’s Spurrier running it up. It’s Urban Cryer and calling late timeouts. It’s Saint Tim (who might be a genuinely nice guy, if only the media would let up for a minute). It’s whatever the obscene count is over the last two decades — despite the count overall that nobody seems to mention, as if Florida never fielded a football team until c. 1990. It’s a neutral site game, jean shorts and all. It’s a divisional game and we’re usually two of the three best teams in the division. Maybe most of all, it’s the fact that I almost didn’t post this because I can’t stand that Florida, of all teams, is our biggest rival because they’re the only division team that’s been more successful than us, on a national scale, since Richt arrived. So yeah, it’s the Gators. Argh.
Beautiful
Couldn’t agree more w/ just about everything you said here.

Me neither
I too graduated in ‘08, and Tennessee would’be probably been tops on my list too…but this year confirmed Florida is tops on my to hate list.

Got to be UF
Everything NMdawg said about UF let me second that.
For me the hatred towards UF stared with Steve Spurrier. My “coming of age” as a dawg fan occurred in the 90’s (not the best decade to be a dawg, I know). I’ve been a dawg fan for as long as I can remember but was to young during the 80’s to really appreciate what Dooley and Erk were doing. Anyway it was Spurrier’s arrogance and snide comments that really started cultivating my hatred for the gators. However now that I’m older (and Spurrier is getting his payback) my hatred for UF has dwindled to more of a strong dislike but as far as the 1-11 (God forbid) scenario goes it would be UF.
Florida without question.......
…….. Our goal every year should be win the east (without that we advance no where). Florida is the bully blocking the gate that we must open before we can even begin to discuss top five rankings.
My fascination (“coming of age”) with all things UGA began in 1966 with the beat down of the Gators (my first UGA game). I’ll never forget it – I wore a 3 piece wool suit (as did most civilized fans back in the day) and got into the game without a ticket as the crowd overwhelmed the gate – pouring in like lemmings.
By the 4th quarter the Gator Bowl was half empty as the Gator fans ran for the exits just as Spurrier ran from the relentless Dogs – Patton and Stanfill in particular. After Hughes returned a Spurrier interception for a TD I was able to move down closer to seats near the Gator bench. Finally I was positioned close enough to see the great Spurrier sitting with a towel over his head, battered, bruised, humiliated and a loser. Damn – I’m old.
If LSU went 1-11, I wouldn't care who we beat...
I guess that goes hand in hand with us not having a rival?
Florida, without question.
As one who remembers Georgia football B.M. (before Munson), Ga’ s biggest rival since Tech chose to go independent and then to the basketball conference because Chick Graning got his face mashed in playing big boy SEC football has been and always will be the Gators. Heck, I’m so old I remember Theron Sapp and Pat Dye playing for Georgia as well as the Big Toe from Cairo (that’s Kay-row) to you youngsters. Gators ate boogers then, and always will__no matter who wins the game. Some things just don’t change.
Damn.......
Another old dog fan…..I feel young again…..I remember the pictures of Chick’s swollen face in the AJC but don’t remember the Alabama player responsible.
I think it was Darwin Holt (according to my dad)
Bama-GT was pretty heated then (most everyone has seen the pictures of Coach Bryant walking into Grant Field wearing a helmet). My dad has vivid memories of that rivalry, hence the Bill Curry uproar.

It's definitely Florida
My argument is very similar to NMdawg’s…I’m from southeast Georgia, I’m also 22, and Florida is tops on my list.
To me, it would fall between Florida and Tennessee, but I rate it a little bit differently that some people. A large portion of my family are Auburn fans/alumni, so I really have very little disdain for the Flatlanders. They’re certainly obnoxious, but personally, I just don’t really have an issue with them, and generally pull for them when not playing Georgia. I think the best way to judge the biggest rival (though Skigator’s 1-11 argument is very good) is which victory/loss gives the most satisfaction/disappointment. To me, hands down, that is Florida. I dislike Tennessee, but after losing to Tennessee last year, I could still have a reasonable conversation with most Tennessee fans and simply say “y’all beat the crap out of us today, there’s nothing we can say, you outplayed us”. However, after being trounced by Florida this year, there were no such niceties…on either side. All I could think was how much I hated Florida…and I don’t think there was a single nice comment from a Florida fan after the game. It was pretty much “(insert expletive here) you, you (expletive-ending-in-ing) (insult-directed-at-sexuality)”. To quote a friend of mine who goes to Tennessee but came down to join in the festivities: “Wow, I’ve never seen anything like this. We don’t like Florida and we REALLY don’t like Alabama, but we’re still more or less civil to each other. You guys truly HATE each other.” To me, when a fellow SEC fan with huge rivalries of their own can objectively look at two other teams and admit that their respective rivalry is much more heated, it only serves to reconfirm that Florida is, indeed, our biggest rival.
As for Tech, yes, it is disgusting to lose to them, but when beating them, it just kinda feels like…eh, we were supposed to do that. They’re our nerdy little brother, whereas Florida is the jerk we’re competing with to get the girl…it just isn’t the same.
Florida is not a rival
One must win the game sometimes for there to be a rival.
Auburn is our closest rival on many, many levels. They have ruined many seasons for us, just as we have for them.
Our greatest coaches (VD and Erk) were Auburn men, and Auburn’s were Georgia men.
The total point totals for over a century of playing are within a few of each other.
Auburn is where kids go who do not get into UGA, then they claim that Auburn is the greatest college on earth when they move back to Atlanta.
AU-UGA is “lay down Dawgs,” sUGAr falling from the sky, the firehoses, Robert Edwards OT game, Michael Johnson, Pat Sullivan ’71, Bo vs. Herschel…
The list is Auburn, Gtu, UF, Clemson, Ufk.
Ufk is not a good rivalry, because we have played so few times through the years, and we have never met with anything significant on the line.
Sorry Ron
but I have to disagree with your logic on this completely. You’re looking at the past twenty years, but forgetting that Georgia owns the lead in the series. Also, we’ve won the game two out of the last five years (if you want to look at very recent history). This is the kind of logic I expect from a gator, but not from a Georgia fan. I would be willing to bet that anyone who was in Jacksonville for the game this year (which I was) will attest that after last year’s dance party in the endzone and subsequent butt-whipping, the rivalry this year was very much renewed. Gator fans everywhere were as happy to beat Georgia as I’ve seen them in years. If that’s not a rivalry, I’m not sure what exactly is.
by hailtogeorgia on Jan 19, 2009 3:20 PM EST up reply actions
Owns the lead in what series?
Not with Auburn you don’t. Maybe that’s why Anchorman ranks them the way he does.
Everybody loves to dump on Auburn, but only one of the three traditional powers in the SEC (AL, TN, GA) has a winning record against us, and it ain’t by much. And that’s in spite of decades of neutral field games with all three.
Auburn-Georgia is a respectful rivalry and I find that respect mutual just about everywhere I go except this blog. I can understand wanting to beat us, but hating us? Surely it hasn’t come to that, not after all we’ve been through. We both inaugurated football in the deep south. We’re really not that different, you and me…
I think a better poll might have been who is your 2nd biggest rival?

Yes JD,
I was referring to Florida. I’m not really sure how that was misconstrued in a post where Auburn wasn’t even mentioned, but hey, what do I know? War Eagle Atlanta, I wasn’t trying to “dump on Auburn”, and with all due respect, if you look at the vast majority of posts here, Auburn is not considered to be Georgia’s biggest rival. As I’ve posted already, I was raised cheering for Auburn and will cheer for them under almost any circumstance other than that in which they are playing Georgia. As for the respect of the rivalry, I think there are a lot of people who respect the rivalry with Auburn, they just don’t count it as our biggest rivalry game. It has tradition, it has history, but far and wide, it doesn’t have the hate reserved for Florida by many Georgia fans (other than Kyle, who, in case you didn’t know, hates Auburn…but I would still venture to say that he probably respects the rivalry). However, have you ever seen Kyle try to force his hate onto the readers of this blog? Personally, I have not. He has posted about his extreme disdain for the Plainsmen, but I have never seen him argue with someone about why they should feel same as he when it comes to Auburn. He gives sound reason for why he feels the way he does, and it generally is left at that (with the exception of this year before the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry…which got a bit nasty and led to some bannings, although not without warning and due cause). The bottom line is this: Kyle hates Auburn, I hate Florida. Why is it, however, that there aren’t any Florida fans coming and posting about why they shouldn’t be hated? My guess would be that they respect the rivalry and understand that there are deep feelings involved (as there are with many rivalries). To this point, no one has been shot (that I know of), so we’re still one step ahead of LSU-Alabama.

No...
I didn’t direct that ‘dumping’ comment at your feet—just making a general point. And no, I don’t think Auburn is anything but 3rd on your rivals list, as you are our 2nd. For the most part, I think Auburn and Georgia folk get along fine. I was raised a Georgia fan, so I perhaps treat the rivalry a little different than most.

It has to be Florida......
Sorry I just can’t buy the Auburn justification above, or Tennessee (even though I lived up there for many years and can attest to the obnoxiousness of UT fans), or Tech (they have been a joke since I was a little kid with the exception of a good year every now and then and using ineligible players).
No it has to be Florida….my first Dawg game was in 1978 so I remember Herschel and the Glory Days of the early 80’s. And I remember that we took as much joy then as we do (every blue moon) now when we beat the Swamp Lizards. I remember 44-0, I remember when UF was ranked #1 and left with their tails between their legs. I remember when the streak was in our favor, and one day it will be again.
If we were 1-11 and that one win was against UF and prevented them from winning the East it would be a disappointing but good year.
Florida all day and twice on Saturdays
I feel pretty much like everyone else on this board. Auburn is like a brother that you fight with but can tolerate any other time. Tennessee is pretty annoying but I don’t have real hate for them. Tech is like the little brother that has to get extremely lucky to beat you and then when they do they make posters, signs and championship rings about it. We don’t play Clemson enough and I suspect if we did we would dominate so nope not Clemson. Florida though for everything stated above. I hate Spurrier so much that South Carolina might be number 2 on my hate list. I’m sure Tebow is a certifiable good guy but I don’t like him and I hate every other punk on their team. I feel in my heart that they have stopped us from playing for the NC at least twice in the past 10 years. Urban Meyer is a crybaby and a little bit of a hypocrite. They gave Florida friggin license plates in Georgia which still pisses me off everytime I see one. And they just suck. I hate Florida probably more than any team in the country right now. It’s Florida.
atlsfinest
Man, you need a hug!! It’s not that serious!!! I have to constantly tell my UGa friends and coworkers the same thing. You guys are gonna get ulcer’s!! lol!!!
It sounds like your reasoning is eerily similar to RonBurgundy's
It is all based upon the past 2 decades – Spurrier, Urban Meyer, Tebow.
Would yall’s answer be the same if this question was asked 20 years ago?
Mine would not be
I know you weren’t talking to me, but…. Whether you mean “would I feel the same had we not lost so much in the last 20 years” or “would I feel the same had Spurrier and Meyer not been such tools”, the answer is — I would not. Granted, at age 2 or 3, I wouldn’t have had much of an answer, but if I could bring myself from now back in time, I would guess I’d find Auburn or Tech or Clemson to be a bigger rival. But when you lose repeatedly to a bunch of insufferable jackasses (present company excluded, of course), it tends to strengthen that rivalry at the expense of others. And it seems like lately, nobody has beaten us more often, or with more insufferability, than the Gators.
On behalf of Gator Nation...
I accept your hate.
We are pleased by this outpouring.

My uncle, huge Dawg fan that he is
Claims that he hates Clemson more than any other team. It all has something to do with some game in 1981 or thereabouts that cost UGA a NC shot. Someone can correct me if that’s inaccurate, it was before I was born.
Anyways, I always found that odd that he’s harboring such animosity toward a team for something that happened almost 30 years ago. But if he could vote in this poll, he’d pick Auburn Lite.

Yeah, that's why I put Clemson on here
In the early 1980s, no game in the country mattered more to the national championship than Georgia-Clemson and (at least between two teams who each had league affiliations; I’m not necessarily counting rivalries involving Florida State, Miami, Penn State, or Pitt when those schools were independents) it was the biggest non-conference rivalry in the land, with the possible exception of Oklahoma-Texas.
Just look at the scores from 1977 through 1987: 7-6, 12-0, 12-7, 20-16, 13-3, 13-7, 16-16, 26-23, 20-13, 31-28, 21-20. Each team catapulted itself to a national championship with a home win over the other that came about due to defense, turnovers, and solid kicking. Herschel Walker’s only regular-season loss as a collegian was to Clemson. The series is full of great moments: Scott Woerner’s return, Kevin Butler’s 60-yard field goal, David Treadwell’s back-to-back last-second game-winning three-pointers, etc.
Because the rivalry (at least as an annual affair) was a casualty of conference expansion, the two teams will (barring a bowl meeting in the next four seasons) meet just six times in the 25 years between 1988 and 2012, but, back in the day, Georgia-Clemson was as good as it got.
Go 'Dawgs!
A Gator and new to your site.
UGA fans, I enjoy reading your posts, so I signed up for an account.
For me, UGA is our biggest rival and FSU is second. For most Gator fans that are 35-38 years old, it’s UGA, for the younger Gator fans it’s FSU. For us “oldies” we lived thru the heartache of the 70’s and 80’s (the Richard Appleby, Gene Washington and Lindsay Scott era’s!!!) where no matter what the records were, no matter how much talent we had, we were going to find a way to lose to UGA. Basically, what you guys have been going thru in the 90’s and 00’s. I also live in St. Simons Island, Ga—a major stopping point for UGA fans for Fla-Ga weekend so that definitely doesn’t help!!
I think you guys are going to be alright next year even without Stafford, Moreno and Allen.
You have alot of talent coming back and alot of new talent coming in.
GATORQUEDOG
Thanks, Gatorquedog, and welcome
You’ve hit the nail on the head.
Most intense rivalries are streaky—-look at the long runs of winning and losing in, say, Florida-Florida State or Alabama-Auburn—-but Georgia-Florida has longer arcs. It’s almost eerie how the 19-year cycles of dominance run.
It’s easy to forget that, after 1989, Florida fans felt exactly the way Georgia fans feel today, wondering, “When will we ever beat these guys?”
Go 'Dawgs!
Yeah T Kyle
We were the ones always saying “wait till next year”
Sigh
If only we could go back to those days . . . or, heck, just split ’em 5-5 over a ten-year period so that no one has to endure alternating 20-year periods of feast or famine.
Go 'Dawgs!
Actually,
I really believe that time is about to get here. Richt’s a great recruiter as is Meyer, so the talent level on the field is going to pretty much stay even. We may hold the edge for the next year or two while you guys break in a new qb—but after 09—we will be doing the same thing at qb. I agree though, these 20 year runs are hard to take if you are on the short end.

remember our fight song, folks!
Remember who we sing “to hell with” when we sing Glory Glory??? Yes, some of the luster may have gone off our rivalry with the nerd school in downtown Atlanta, much like the luster has gone off our rivalry with Florida since they are the hammer and we are the nails, but come on!! It takes only one win by the trade school for them to return to their cocky arrogance in even greater waves. Were you at “historic” Grant Field the year of the Sanks fumble that wasn’t? If so, then you know that that school has to be our biggest rivals. I still have key marks from the techies scratching up my truck after that game. Bill Cromartie had it right, except I don’t know how “clean” my old-fashioned hate is for that place. I live in Knoxville, lived here before we turned that rivalry around, and it may have been bad at times. BUt there is NO WAY I could live in Atlanta anywhere near that place. Tech suxs! Go Dawgs!

In order
1 – Florida
2 – Tennessee
3 – Georgia Tech
4 – Auburn
5 – Clemson
I grew up in Clemson Country and…kinda like ’em. My dislike for USC is much greater than anything towards Clemson. I always liked tailgating at Clemson, maybe cause I know more people there than at a Dawg game.
I think Georgia Tech and Auburn are interchangable, but man the Auburn rivalry seems like it gets more interesting every year. But no hatred or even dislike for Auburn, so I had to put them below GTech who I do dislike strongly.
As for Tennessee, the hell with Tennessee. I hate that stupid Rocky Top and I hate Phat Phil and I hate what they did to Bama and I hate their stupid endzones and I hate their jailhouse jumpsuit colors. Peyton seems okay though.
As for my #1, Florida, what can I say that hasn’t been said?
JRL, Darwin Holt is the Bama linebacker
who smashed in Chick Granning’s face.
Still looking ....
…. for “All Of The Above”.
Back in the day, it was Clemson for me (ask Kyle), later Tech after a Techie treated me badly in the Atlanta Varsity (1986), I have to put up with more Auburn fans, Florida’s bandwagon fans irk (Erk) me, and Tennesee is just too orange.
P. S. It was/is always fun and easy to dislike Spurrier, Urban, Curry, Fulmer, Ford, The Riverboat Gambler, etc.
It's a gas, gas, gas.
