Sports Illustrated Cover Draws 15-Yard Penalty
Although the last six months' worth of events in Bulldog Nation have left me bereft of all hope (and, unlike Doug Gillett, I don't have faith in the new president to fall back on in my misery), we did get the slightest glimmer today that all might not be lost:
That, as if you didn't know, is Gator golden boy Tim Tebow engaged in an act of unsportsmanlike conduct, for which he was flagged. (I'm expecting word from Urban Meyer any day now about how Tebow's taunting is going to be a big deal. Urb? You're not going to be hypocritical about this, are you, Urb? The world is waiting. . . .)
If there's any justice in the world at all, the Sports Illustrated cover jinx will come to our rescue. Otherwise, present trends are expected to continue and absolute metaphysical suckitude will persist for the foreseeable future.

Tebow’s return coupled with the departure of Moreno, Allen (wtf!?), and Stafford really makes it suck to be a Bulldog right now. Oh yeah, Derrick Favors is set to announce tomorrow, and most signs are pointing to Georgia Tech. Why does this have to happen when I’m at school here?

Why does Tebow get so much credit for the '06 title?
Actually, asking why Tebow gets credit at all right now might be kinda ridiculous, seeing as he’s the GPOOE and all…but to my eyes, Percy Harvin was the real star for them in the Title Game. This would be so much more bearable if some others—like Harvin and their defense—actually got some credit.

Harvin should have been game MVP
But when a bunch of writers who don’t follow the Gators show up on game day, they pick who filled the stat sheet. (Carlos Dunlap as d-mvp over Major Wright or Ahmad Black.) Also, Harvin had a hairline fracture, not a high ankle sprain.

How many trendy issue wristbands is he wearing? Three?
Tebow is a good guy and a great player. I can accept that.
Urban Meyer, however, is a piece of crap.
And Allen going pro? Huh? WTF.
This sucks. :(

Right on the money Kyle
He gets put on the cover of SI while committing a 15 yard penalty for taunting! Is his real last name Obama? It seems the media love fest with both will continue indefinitely.
BTW, great word! “Suckitiude”

True, but setting it to the tune of the "Jaws" theme . . .
. . . is like Georgia Tech’s band playing the “when you say ‘Budweiser’ you’ve said it all” jingle.
If you’ve been doing something since the ‘20s, fine—-locking arms and swaying while singing “We Are the Boys” is a cool tradition, and Mr. Two Bits has a certain charm—-but, when you’re still trotting out stuff from the ‘70s in the 21st century, it’s time to come up with some new lines.
It’s why I was ready to dump “Krypton Fanfare” when “Crank Dat” came along.

"Why does this have to happen when I’m at school here?"
Good lord, man. Try being at UGA in the mid-’90s before you start throwing that crap around.
By the way, as the announcers helpfully pointed out, Saint Tebow must have been drawn into that penalty by an Oklahoma player. Despite there being absolutely no evidence this was the case, it just had to have happened that way.

Yes, I know the 90s sucked
I’m comparing this to when my siblings were here in the early to middle part of the decade.

Jeez, fellas.
Tebow “chomped” the guy who had just taken a cheap shot at Percy Harvin — trying to tweak his ankle after the play while he was on the ground. I’m amazed that Tim was able to restrain himself to just the chop. Anyway, after the game, he gave the guy (Harris, I think) a hug.
Easy, people… I know tensions are high in Bulldog nation… but talk about desperate digging.

Did you listen to Thom Brennaman (or however you spell it)?
It was bad enough a year ago listening to him call the Sugar Bowl and referring to the Georgia Bulldogs as the Florida Gators, but this year’s broadcast was beyond the pale.
O.K., we get it. Tim Tebow is a good kid and a fine Christian young man. This is to his immense credit, I applaud him for it, and y’all have every right to be proud of him, both on and off the field.
But all that business about how, if you spend five minutes with Tebow, your life will be better was off the charts. When Tebow chomped the guy—-which is clear-cut taunting, and rightly drew a 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct—-Brennaman said that probably was the first thing Tebow had done wrong in his entire life. Obviously, that is preposterous.
So, no, it’s not desperate digging, not by a long shot. It’s quite reasonably getting sick and tired of hearing the ludicrous pumping up of this guy as something, quite literally, superhuman. The suggestion that he’s from Krypton is quite ludicrous enough, but, when he does something that violates the rules and is penalized for it, suggesting that the misconduct represented the first wrongful act in a previously sinless life is simply stupid . . . and Tebow would recognize it (correctly) as blasphemous.
He’s a great player and a fine human being, but, for crying out loud, celebrating him even in the midst of doing something wrong—-particularly after the level of crap we caught, from the news media and from the Gator Nation (up to and including Urban Meyer), for a celebration in our own end zone at a neutral site (which got out of hand, for which we were penalized twice, for which our head coach has apologized repeatedly, and for which the Gators got their revenge with all their fourth-quarter antics in Jacksonville, from the time outs to the fake kneel-down)—-is beyond ridiculous, and, even if you view the world through Gator-colored glasses, you know darned good and well that’s true.

Yeah, Brennaman...
… was definitely over-the-top with the Tebow love. Fox doesn’t really know sh*t from shinola when it comes to college football, so undoubtedly Brennaman and co. looked at previous broadcasts for clues and hints and decided to play it by the script insofar as the Tebow adoration goes. Of course, he went way too far. Even I was getting a little revolted.
Fox also pointed out at least 30 times that the clock stops on first down in college football. Just in case you didn’t figure out that they are totally mystified by this sport. Never thought I’d be saying this, but I can’t wait ’till ESPN takes over so Fox can stop butchering the title game.

We are absolutely on the same page there, Gatorpilot
As much as we in the blogosphere like to criticize ESPN (often deservedly so), the fact is that the Worldwide Leader knows how to broadcast a sporting event.
Fox, on the other hand, would be better off not hiring announcers at all. Just let us watch the game and show us the robot football player on the commercial bumps, and leave it at that.

Tebow of Nazareth
The disgrace that was Fox’s fawning over Tebow has become a national punchline. Naturally, everyone sees how ridiculous it has gotten except Florida fans.

I don't mind Tebow coming back
why should we want this guy to go out on top of UGA and on top of the nation?
Let’s beat the best and knock him off the pedestal in Jacksonville next year!
And there’s no better chant than “Teabag Tebow”
by UgaBulldog14 on Jan 14, 2009 11:17 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
It would be great....
to hear “Don’t cry Tebow clap-clap-clap-clap-clap Don’t cry Tebow”, if we beat them next year. Either that, or our entire team and fans doing a mock-chomp for the last few minutes of the game across the field at them. Anything to rub their noses in it. Alas, we’d actually have to win first, so…..
by UgaMatt on Jan 14, 2009 11:46 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, first things first
Let’s focus on actually winning before anything else. Many a sure-fire pick-six was dropped by a defensive back who was already thinking about his end zone dance. Let’s not put the cart before the horse.

Tebow is Florida's Herschel
The reptiles will be very tough next year, but if Kyle’s observations about UGA beating national champs the following year holds true……..

"Florida's Herschel"?
I know you’re right, but that expression just makes me want to puke.
It’s like saying “Hell’s Jesus.” The two words just have no place anywhere near each other.

SI Cover Jinx
Florida’s defense wasn’t on the cover.
I don’t care what your offense is like. Get that many turnocers, defensive stops and positions presents like that D will grant you in a given game and your offense will look bloody brilliant.
