Sometimes, We Have Stereotypes for a Reason
My perception has always been that Alabama fans have class and Auburn fans are crass.
My perception of the former has been confirmed by the conduct of the 'Bama faithful (with a few rare exceptions) in Athens last weekend and at this weblog last week and this one.
My perception of the latter now has been confirmed, as well.
I don't like losing to Alabama, but, man, I hate Auburn!
My thanks go out to all fans of S.E.C. schools in the Yellowhammer State. As lousy as last weekend was, it's nice to know I wasn't wrong about any of you.
Go 'Dawgs!

I hate Auburn
Just wait til the week of the Auburn game. I will post a manifesto that is so full of hatred and loathing for all things Auburn, it will reverberate throughout the internet for years to come. I wrote it on a different website before last year’s tilt, but it is worthy of bringing back.

Why thank you
And if you think you like it now, just wait until the week of November 15. The things I say may just earn me a place in the Auburn Hatred Hall of Fame, which is something we can all get behind.

I'm no Auburn fan,
but that link above was pretty sanguine compared to some garbage I’ve seen from ’Bama fans across the net. Some of them are acting like these past 5 games make up for the past ten years.
I guess it comes from their coach.

The Alabama fans get to say whatever they want
Their team won, and, while I have encountered a tiny handful of crass Crimson Tide fans, both in Athens and here at Dawg Sports, the vast majority of them in both places have been gracious.
The Auburn fans, though, are rubbing salt in wounds they weren’t men enough to make, and I have nothing but contempt for them.

i HATE auburn too!
i hope i have been one of gracious ones lol ! but anyway i just wanted to say that all you Dawg fans have been very gracious as well, much more than others have been (considering when i tried to comment on track em tigers i was asked to leave) and in doing so you have made me a fan of this blog, now i come on this blog as an SEC fan and find myself enjoying cleverly written blogs on a regular basis, so kudos to you guys for making me a fan of this site!

Thanks . . .
. . . and, yeah, you’re one of the good ones. In fact, I don’t even remember the bad ones by name; there were a couple or three of them—-one I don’t think was even an Alabama fan; he just wanted to take the opportunity to trash Mark Richt—-but each and every one of them signed up for the sole purpose of posting one nasty, always humorless, usually vulgar comment, and I deleted their comments and banned every one of them.
The rest of y’all are good people and I expected no less. I don’t like losing to anyone, but, in terms of the level of crap flung from the victorious fan base, there’s no team whose boosters I’d rather deal with after a defeat than y’all.

Give me a break Kyle
I’m not going to come on here and say that all Auburn fans are angels and all Alabama fans are awful people, but to state that “Alabama fans have class and Auburn fans are crass” is just wrong. Any fan base has its fans who are friendly, hospitable, and charming, just as any fan base has its fans who are crass, rude, and obnoxious. You must have never crossed the Chattahoochee if you really think Alabama fans have class. I was always taught to treat visiting teams and their fans as our guests in Auburn. I think a majority of our fans feel the same way, but if you have had bad experiences or what not, then I apologize. The fact remains that you plainly mischaracterized both fanbases.
I didn’t find anything crass about War Eagle Atlanta’s open letter to UGA fans, or at least anything more crass than saying “I hate Auburn” everytime you mention my alma mater. It’s just fun ribbing at a rival’s expense. What you do doesn’t bother me, or, I’d imagine, most Auburn fans who casually read this blog. Either you need to take a look in the mirror or grow some thicker skin.

I don't know...
I have to say, my experience with Auburn fans has generally, both in Athens and away at Auburn, been very pleasant and gracious. This was true in 2006 when we lost at home, as well as the last two years when we have won. Granted, I have never actually been able to attend a Bama-UGA game, so my frame of reference is somewhat limited, but my perception of Tide fans overall has been of a more obnoxious and sore winning/losing bunch.
Please remember, as I stated, I have limited actual experience with Bama fans and thus am admittedly basing this, in large part, on third hand stories and stereotypes. It sounds like, by most accounts on this site, I am completely wrong, and I generally agree with 99.9% of what Kyle says and don’t discount his perception. My main point was to say that Auburn is the rival SEC school that in my experience tends to see the nation’s oldest rivalry as a unique thing, and therefore is more characterized by mutual respect as opposed to the intense hatred that I harbor for Florida. (I think it goes without saying that Florida has the worst fans in the SEC) I HATE HATE HATE Florida.
That being said, I too was pretty put off by War Eagle Atlanta’s letter. Like Kyle said, to “rub salt in wounds they weren’t men enough to make”, I think, is mean spirited, cowardly and low class. Also, I think the reference to burying UGA VI was especially uncalled for. Maybe I am too sensitive or too much of a dog lover, but that statement just downright pissed me off.

Bitterness?!?
After what’s taken place the past two years I can certainly imagine the author of the aforementioned letter was calmly waiting on pins and needles in the event of a bad Georgia loss so that he could put pen to paper at the expense of the Dawgs. The fact that loss came against Satan and his throng of elephants only complicates matters.
Maybe it has something to do with the fact I’ve only been a follower and supporter of UGA athletics since 2001, but I don’t have the same hatred for Auburn that others seem to have. (The same most certainly can’t be said for UF or UT). The Auburn fans I’ve generally encountered have been nice enough and I’d like to think there is ultimately a mutual respect when you take into account it is the South’s oldest rivalry. I may certainly be in the minority on that one.
Go Dawgs!

duh.
By “nation’s oldest rivalry”, I’m assuming everyone knows that I meant “the Deep South’s oldest rivalry”. Because clearly, as a devoted and informed Dawg fan, I know the difference. Right…. Whatever, I don’t have to impress you. (I also do realize that we lost at home in 2005, not 2006. Oops.)
But seriously, Texan Dawg basically said exactly what I was trying to say, as far as the rivalry and respect between the Dawgs and Tigers (of the Auburn variety; screw LSU). And I also agree that there is definitely a generational difference among Dawg fans that contributes to who your most hated SEC rival is.
Gatorade?! I don't care if it's delicious and quenches thirst like no other. Why don't you just make a check out directly to the University of Florida?

Even though...
…it would help ya’ll if Spread Eagle wins, I can’t help but hope and pray that somehow Vandy pulls off the W. It would be divine retribution. SG Standard, I look forward to reading your manifesto of hate when the time comes.

My thoughts on the crazy, stupid annoying fans!
As i mentioned in an early post i have lived in 4 SEC stats and i currently live in Georgia, . I spent 14 of my 26 years in Mobile, AL. When i moved to Tennessee in 1996, i was one of those annoying Bama fans that you speak of. I thought Alabama was the beginning and the end of college footbal and I knew very little about the world outside of Alabama and the SEC. I took a while for me to be humbled (actually it took probation, and 5 coaches) Now i fully understand my teams position in the landscape of College football and also understand where other fans are coming from.
What im i trying to say? When we speak of the crazies when it comes to fans, i feel they make up about 20% of every teams fanbase. From what i have seen a majority of those fans have never lived outside the state in which their team resides. If they had moved away from their home state, they probably would be so “crazy”. In my travels, I have met so many UGA fans who feel UGA is the Alpha and Omega, FSU fans that think there was no football until FSU actually became good in the mid 80’s, UF fans that have never lived outside of gainsville and didn’t know other teams actually played football. The worst was the UT fans who thought Fulmer was a god and P. Manning was the 2nd coming. But in every state i lived in, there were some great fans who just loved their team.
All teams have their crazies but some have more than others.
Don't take life to seriously, you'll never get out alive.
