Bama and UGA Match-ups

Hey guys. Im a member over at RollBamaRoll and have been coming here for a couple of weeks reading and commenting on some great articles here. I posted this over at our site, Bama vs UGA. with my own predictions of course . Id love to hear your guys thoughts on some of the big matchups we will see on Saturday.

I'll start off by saying that UGA should beat us by 14. They are the #3 team in the country, they are more experienced, they have a better QB and they have home field advantage. But like I said, they should. I should have a 12 inch.....sub from Publix right now, I should be a millionaire and damnt I should be going to this game but  should doesn't me shit! This is the SEC and as we have seen many times before, anything can happen. The guys over at Alligator Army seem to think we as in Alalabama, and i quote, "Are going to get our asses kicked". Im not so sure about that. The thing is I can't come to a final score prediction. I definitely don't see us getting trounced. These two teams are way to similar to put a number on the final score. So what's my prediction? Well, i don't have one but i do have some "keys" that might help tell what might happen.

1. UGA O-line vs Alabama's front 7:

Advantage:

2. UGA's D-line vs Alabama's O-line:

Advantage:

3. Stafford vs Wilson:

Advantage:

4. Special Teams:

Advantage:

5. Running Game:

Advantage:

Its almost too early to predict a score. My heart says Alabama but my head says UGA. This the biggest game an Alabama has faced in years and could possibly be the catalyst to an amazing year. It could also end in weeping and nashing of teeth.  Im going with Alabama in this one because of our defensive and offensive lines. Football is won in the trenches and we cleary have the advantage here. No score prediction but i do think we win. How about you?

BTW

What im looking for is more than just “Who’s got the advantage”. Give me a little breakdown on how you think the matchups will play out.

I'll take a stab (who wants to work this week anyways?)

1. UGA O-line vs Alabama’s front 7:

Advantage: We broke in a new line against ASU and they held up well. Ben Jones is a tough center. I think they’ll let him try 1 on 1 against Cody and if need be, double, if Cody becomes too much of a disruption. I think Bobo will keep a TE for an extra blocker. I think initial advantage to Bama, but feel that the line will give enough time for Stafford on a few deep throws and open just enough holes for our offense to get its points. I see something like 15-25 for 200 for Staff and 20 for 80 for Knowshon.

2. UGA’s D-line vs Alabama’s O-line:

Advantage: I think the difference here is going to be UGA’s linebackers. Ellerbe and Curran are like heat seekers. We might not get quite the push up the middle (we miss Owens a lot) but Weston, Atkins and Irvin have done a pretty good job of freeing up Ellerbe and Curran to make plays. DE Justin Houston might be breaking out a bit, but DEs are still a mystery for now. Advantage UGA.

3. Stafford vs Wilson:

Advantage: You can’t ever discount a senior QB, but he just isn’t as talented as Stafford. I think Stafford will face more pressure than Wilson will, but I think Stafford will make bigger plays when it is needed. This is a bit of a homer view, I haven’t seen JPW enough to know how clutch he is. But I do know I’ve seen Stafford complete lots of 15-25 yd throws on 3rd down. And Bama will have to respect the deep ball with the emergence of Green to compliment MoMass.

4. Special Teams:

Advantage: I’d say toss up, but lean Bama. Bama has a great return man, correct? UGA is still feeling ours out, but if you put Knowshon back there, its probably a push. Need a GW FG? While Walsh is a true freshman, he has the swagger. Tiffin is a proven commodity so I’d say lean Bama just for the experience. But there won’t be too many worried Dawg fans if the game is on Walsh’s foot at the end (compared to Andy Bailey standing back there). KO coverage is a major work in progress for us and I honestly don’t know about Bama.

5. Running Game:

Advantage: Both teams are highly ranked in both rush defense. I posted this in another thread, but I think there is just something special about the way Knowshon runs in terms of YAC. With everyone keying on him, and stacked boxes, he still finds a way to get 2-3 yards out of a poorly blocked or just blown up play. I did see where Bama’s back is averaging close to 10 ypc. I’d say they haven’t faced LBs like Curran and Ellerbe. And that while Shon is “only” averaging about 6 or 7 a carry, that is still with 4 straight games of the opposing team throwing everything at him. Advantage:UGA

Let me add my interpretation to something: Bama is missing the boat a bit on the “blackout”. The players don’t need it for motivation. They would have been plenty focused regardless of the black jerseys. But the blackout is for the fans – we are going to severly pumped up and be even more of a factor than we would have already been.

I think both teams come out to take care of business. Nothing personal, just two teams with something to prove. I can’t say I won’t be surprised if UGA loses and not that Alabama isn’t “there” yet. I just think UGA has more talent and more depth this season.

UGA 27 Bama 20

Great thoughts

I think these two teams are very equally matched. Both have a good defense and a strong running game. Stafford is what seperates these two teams. If we are able to get pressure on him, we have a chance. If we don’t, then it could be a very long day.

Thanks for posting this, bammer

It was a good way to get a productive discussion going, and I appreciate it.

It seems to me that Alabama’s clearest advantages are on the lines. Our defensive front lost a lot in the first game of the season, whereas the Crimson Tide offensive line is extremely solid. The same goes for Georgia’s reshuffled offensive line against Alabama’s defensive front.

There’s absolutely no question both Bulldog lines will face their stiffest tests of the season on Saturday night. I would give Georgia the edge in most other categories (albeit usually a slight edge), but it all comes down to who controls the line of scrimmage.

Go 'Dawgs!

You almost read my book

Here was my thoughts….

I’ll start off by saying that UGA should beat us by 14. They are the #3 team in the country, they are more experienced, they have a better QB and they have home field advantage. But like I said, they should. I should have a 12 inch…..sub from Publix right now, I should be a millionair and damnt I should be going to this game but the should doesn’t me shit! So what’s my prediction? Well, i don’t have one but i do have some “keys” that might help tell what might happen.

1. UGA O-line vs Alabama’s front 7: Biggest match-up of the night. If Alabama is unable to stop the run with the front 7 and can’t get pressure on Stafford with the front 4, Bobbo’s offense will pick us apart. Not because we are terrible in the defensive back field, its just that Stafford and his recieving core are that good. What we do have is the beast Terrance Cody to plug the middle and as stated in another thread, he will be facing a freshman at center for UGA. Our d-line is the strength of our defense and UGA’s oline is their weakest link. They say it starts in the trenches and those words have never been more true.

Advantage: Alabama

2. UGA’s D-line vs Alabama’s O-line: Another battle up front and another key point to this game. IMO Bama’s o-line is as good as any in the country. We have experience, amazing talent and most importantly depth. We have shown the ability to move guys around and have them play different positions but still be productive. UGA’s d-line isn’t exactly something that has me worried but they have shown the ability to put pressure on the QB. Something that our O-line has struggled to prevent. We must open holes for the running backs and give JPW time to make the right read. If we don’t. Watch out!

Advantage: Alabama

3. Stafford vs Wilson: No brainer here. JPW is a solid QB but he is no Stafford. This kid can make all the throws and has a rocket for an arm. He will be a future top 5 NFL pick, Wilson won’t be.

Advantage: UGA

4. Special Teams: This one is tough to pick. Javy give’s Bama the edge in return man but our kick coverage has been suspect. If UGA’s smart, Javy will never get a chance to touch the ball. If Bama’s smart, we learn how to stay in our lanes in kick coverage and not over pursue. I could see this game coming down to a field goal or field position. So in many ways, a lot like last year.

Advantage: Push

5. Running Game: Glenn Coffee, Roy Upchruch, Mark Ingram and Terry Grant are all fine backs and to be honest Ingram is going to be a freakin beast but not one of them can compare to Knowshon Moreno. He’s a Reggie Bush type back and if you give him a inch, he’ll take 100 yards. We might have the better o-line but that kid is the X-factor in this game. If we don’t contaiin him its going to be a long night.

Advantage: UGA
