Cocktail Thursday: South Carolina Edition.
Today's cocktail theme music is brought to you courtesy of Corb Lund and the Hurtin' Albertans (with an assist from a youtube user who should probably switch to water) Warning, mild profanity:
What does a Canadian country band have to do with SEC football? In the words of that song, at least metaphorically, it's time to switch to whiskey. We've been sipping beer for two weeks against teams that presented just enough of a challenge to help our starters break a sweat and let our backups get their feet wet. But this week's contest pits Georgia against a horse chicken of a different color. A wounded chicken at that. In its own henhouse. What looms ahead is not a task for the faint of heart, nor for those sipping fancy imported beers. No, this is a job for blood-crazed zombie tailgaters men of courage.
Thus this week's cocktail supplies your requisite liquid courage in the form of Wild Turkey Kentucky bourbon, also known as "The Kickin' Chicken". Wild Turkey thus earns the honor as the first repeat beverage is the Cocktail Thursday series. Because if it ain't broke, you shouldn't fix it. When last we imbibed this particular spirit, on the eve of the 2006 showdown between Georgia and South Carolina, the 'Dawgs subsequently rode the passable performance of a freshman quarterback to a shutout victory in Columbia. That freshman is all grown up now, and I look for him to drive Steve Spurrier to drink on Saturday afternoon.
It's time to play some SEC football. Are you ready?

Faux pas?
Having been raised in an era when seersucker and white were taboo after Labor Day and carrying that fashion upbringing into the realm of adult beverages, it has been my custom to abandon brown liquor at Memorial Day through Labor Day, relying on beer and white liquor (vodka, gin, and even “off whites” like rum or tequila). The problem is that with global warming and all, it is still hot as hell after Labor Day and the heat pushes me toward the summertime drinks set forth in the previous sentence. Brown liquor and be in step with fashion or white liquor and/or beer for sanity__that is the question.
Cocktail Thursday hasn't failed me yet
I can’t stand Wild Turkey, but in the name of superstition and continuity, I guess I don’t have a whole lot of choice.
"Who knew that Florida would one day hire a coach that made us long for the graciousness and dignity of the Steve Spurrier era?"
Thus sayeth T. Kyle King
I have made the trip to Tall Boy Beverage Co.
and I have purchased the Wild Turkey. I am, somewhat begrudgingly, ready to do my part.
