Thanks for a Great Season, Diamond Dogs

The College World Series is done and, like all playoffs, it could end only in one of two ways: (1) disappointment or (2) a national championship.
While, unfortunately, it was the former result rather than the latter, the Diamond Dogs accomplished much in winning the regular-season Southeastern Conference crown and advancing as far as the finals. Like their football counterparts last fall, the Red and Black finished the season as the No. 2 team in the country. That ain’t bad.
There will be more to follow in the days ahead as I report on the season’s last outing and offer a few final thoughts on the Classic City Canines’ successful campaign. For now, though, I want to say a word of thanks, to David Perno, his team, and the loyal fans of Bulldog Nation.
I congratulate Fresno State on their N.C.A.A. title, but it is to the team from the Classic City, not the team from the Raisin Capital of the World, that I refer when I say . . .

I’m a Californian and all I have to say is “REAL DOGS ARE FROM CALIFORNIA”! Don’t get me wrong, I think Georgia is a fantastic team, and your dawgs did an awesome job. I found myself rooting for certain members of your team. However, I am here in California exstatic over our win and so proud of our FSU Bulldogs! Can’t wait for the homecoming tomorrow. FSU Bulldogs were certainly deserving of this win!

I congratulate Fresno State on the win
It was much deserved. I wrote after the first game that, even in defeat, F.S.U. proved it belonged in the finals. Obviously, everything that happened after that point only underscored that reality, which no one can deny.
Your pride in your team is richly deserved, but I take exception to the implicit message of the “Real Dogs Are From California” slogan we saw on so many signs in Omaha. The suggestion that the Georgia Bulldogs and their fans somehow are less “Real Dogs” than the Fresno State Bulldogs and their fans is, quite frankly, silly, stupid, insulting, inflammatory, and wrong.
I share Winston Churchill’s belief that one should be defiant in defeat and magnanimous in victory. I appreciate and accept your compliments and I reiterate my congratulations to Fresno State on the team’s impressive performance and well-earned glory.
However genuine our West Coast brethren may be, though, you should not doubt that real ‘Dawgs are from Georgia, too, complete with college football national championships, a famous mascot, a 223-year-old university, and everything.
