Best of Luck

I hope UGA can pull it off and when the CWS. It would be a great story for a team many did not think would be that competitive.

Nice pregame by Erin Andrews

Nothing novel, of course, but she’s giving off a nice Helen Hunt circa 1996 vibe that works for her.

Let's go Dawgs! GATA

Good afternoon all. EA looks nice.

by Russell4u2 on Jun 24, 2008 6:59 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah

this was a concern all afternoon for me because it would be a huge break for Fresno if the rain postponed the game . But luckily the showers from this afternoon have tapered to the point where there is only a delay.

Georgia needs to just go take care of business tonight. Just another game gentlemen.

A look at the doppler

shows no showers in the states around Nebraska. We should be clear once we get this thing started (keeping the fingers crossed though)

In stores July 15?

I’ve heard this song too many times already.

Let’s get started. Go ‘Dawgs!

Go 'Dawgs!

OAR is actually a good band

but they’ve become too mainstream now so it’s hard to listen to. Still got some good songs though. The song is catchy I will say

Larry Munson: "Whaddya got for us Loran?"
Loran Smith: "Well Larry, I'm down here with Charles Grant...and he just loves boiled peanuts!"
Larry Munson: "Good stuff, Loran"

On that move to third...

What’s the rule on a balk there? Doesn’t he have to make some sort of motion to third before he turns back to first? I’m not saying it was a balk…it just looked out of the ordinary.

by Russell4u2 on Jun 24, 2008 7:48 PM EDT reply actions

My understanding

I was never a pitcher but from what I know: There is some sort of “invisible plane” of about 25 degrees or so from the rubber and the pitcher can’t commit past that and then make a move towards a base. Otherwise it’s a balk.

That play looked legit and almost picked off Gordo. Very nice move by their SP

Great start…let’s go Nick!

by DavetheDawg on Jun 24, 2008 7:53 PM EDT reply actions

Nice start . . .

. . . but my decision to watch this one with the sound turned on may prove ill-advised.

Mike Patrick can’t tell the difference between Georgia’s bullpen and Fresno State’s? Egad!

Or the pitch count...

and I guarantee he won’t flip his lineup card over again.

by DavetheDawg on Jun 24, 2008 7:55 PM EDT up reply actions

As well as we started the top...

We are starting the bottom as badly. Ouch to the lead-off walk!

by Russell4u2 on Jun 24, 2008 7:57 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah . . .

. . . when you come on with a three-run lead, you need a one-two-three inning to set the tone.

Maybe

We’ll see how much it means after a few more innings.

Mike Patrick . . .

. . . needs to get off of Cerione’s tail.

He failed to make a catch, then he got an out and came up throwing.

You’d rather him pull a Larry Walker and think there were three outs when there were only two?

A few more drinks...

And Orel will start waxing poetic about the players’ bodies. He’s done it without fail in every game so far. It usually starts around the 6th.

Exactly

We won’t need one big inning if we pad the lead a little every inning.

Don’t get me wrong, though; I’ll take a big inning.

Maybe this is just me

or does the way Montgomery kinda falls away from the rubber as he makes a pitch look a lot like Tim Hudson? Really drives down and keeps the ball down.

What is it with the bottom of their order . . .

. . . hitting the ball so hard?

It seems like their last three hitters have done significally better against us than their first three.

Go 'Dawgs!

by T Kyle King on Jun 24, 2008 9:01 PM EDT reply actions

I think I would have done the same

It’s only the third inning and he had thrown maybe 20 pitches over the first two innings.

Larry Munson: "Whaddya got for us Loran?"

I'd have yanked him two batters earlier

It was clear he didn’t have it and, with a 5-1 lead, you go for the knockout punch.

Go 'Dawgs!

by T Kyle King on Jun 24, 2008 9:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I think it was becoming clear that he was losing it

But what Perno (and me for that matter) might have been thinking was where is the guy that was pitching the first two innings? It’s weird to see a guy fall completely apart like that in the course of like three batters

by SouthernDawg on Jun 24, 2008 9:05 PM EDT reply actions

That was a bad pitch

no doubt but it’s not his fault two other dudes are on base.

Besides, Fresno’s 1-5 hitters mentality is just to swing really hard and hope for the best. They’ve gotten way lucky imo

Larry Munson: "Whaddya got for us Loran?"

This is why you have to retire batters

They’re going to get their home runs, but there’s only so much those can hurt you if you don’t put men on base beforehand.

I know we joke about the ACC

but I’m starting to feel their pain. We’re the SEC champs, their from the WAC. We should beat them 9 out of 10 times maybe 10 out of 10.

The ACC always complains about being the superior conference and here we go with us (the SEC) going against this inferior WAC team.

With that said, we’re only down five and we do have those AWESOME Nike bats

This is college baseball, though

and I think conference affiliations don’t mean as much as they do in football or basketball for example…

I mean teams like Long Beach State, CS Fullerton, Wichita St., Rice, and others are considered traditional baseball powers but don’t play in “big time” athletic conferences

As much as ESPN keeps trying to shove this “Cinderella Wonderdogs” crap down our throats, the fact is that this Fresno St. team is extremely talented and was pre-season ranked by a number of publications while we were not. This team didn’t just come out of nowhere with nothing but a bunch of scrappy dudes playing way over their heads… they were a talented group that underachieved badly early in the year and finally got real hot at the right time.

I honestly think

I’d rather see a guy hit a leadoff homerun than a walk. Maybe these guys will use up all their hits tonight.

And, I don’t think we’ve got ‘em right where we want ‘em anymore, FWIW.

by DavetheDawg on Jun 24, 2008 10:08 PM EDT reply actions

Agreed on both counts

A solo shot adds a run. A walk starts a big inning.

That's certainly the case

I said in last night’s game report that Fresno State proved on Monday night that they belonged. That’s obviously true.

Barring a miracle tonight, you just have to shake this one off and move on to tomorrow night.

I can't help thinking

that this one isn’t over yet. Surely we can uncork for a couple of big innings. But we need to do it in the 7th.

Srike 3

Anybody else still churning over that strike em out throw em out that was an obvious ball four? oh well lets just play some ball and get this tonight

by SRQ Dawg on Jun 24, 2008 10:24 PM EDT reply actions

At this point it doesn't matter

But Grimm looks promising. He might get touched up tonight (at this rate who knows what will happen) but what a future he has.

Who else would it be? Man if he can’t eat some innings…...

This could be the inning we needed . . .

. . . to win it tonight, or, failing that, to chew through enough F.S.U. pitchers to soften them up for tomorrow night.

Go to that bullpen, Fresno!

Go 'Dawgs!

by T Kyle King on Jun 24, 2008 10:33 PM EDT reply actions

Excellent point.

We need to play hard for every out tonight and see what happens.

by Hunker Down Dawg on Jun 24, 2008 10:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Tomorrow?

Come on, haven’t you seen us play this year.

by SRQ Dawg on Jun 24, 2008 10:33 PM EDT reply actions

Hmmm...

this could get interesting. For once, Mike Patrick is right. Station to Station (But a grand slam wouldn’t hurt, either).

by DavetheDawg on Jun 24, 2008 10:35 PM EDT reply actions

Nahhhhh

leave the pitcher in…

by 86Dawg on Jun 24, 2008 10:41 PM EDT reply actions

Amen

3 up 3 down, please.

by NCT on Jun 24, 2008 10:44 PM EDT reply actions

Exactly

That inning was big, but not big enough for us to give up any more runs . . . or even concede more than one baserunner at a moment at which we have all the momentum.

Remember all of the Home runs

we hit against Tech in the Regional? Where have they gone?

by Hunker Down Dawg on Jun 24, 2008 10:44 PM EDT reply actions

I knew I shouldn't have pulled up the live audio of the 960 broadcast

One run in but Poythress and Crane recorded outs. Quick innings now guys

This is absolutely . . .

. . . the start to the seventh inning we did not need!

by T Kyle King on Jun 24, 2008 10:52 PM EDT reply actions

Not only did they have a low seed

But Fresno State had to walk to Omaha from California.

by NCT on Jun 24, 2008 10:54 PM EDT reply actions

And they are using bats from the local

Omaha high school because they didn’t have any aluminum bats back in Fresno.

by Hunker Down Dawg on Jun 24, 2008 10:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Absolutely awful

Our middle relief is either porous or unhittable, never mediocre. They’re either melting down like in last year’s season-ender against South Carolina or they’re going weeks without allowing an earned run in S.E.C. play, as they did this year.

It’s feast or famine with these guys in a game in which merely being average would have guaranteed a win.

DId you guys know he has a bad thumb?

Patrick actually said it was cartilage once. What a moron. Ligament/cartilage… same thing right?

by Hunker Down Dawg on Jun 24, 2008 11:01 PM EDT reply actions

Well . . .

. . . two more four-run frames like the last one, and we’ll tie it to go to extra innings.

Provided we can keep them from scoring, of course.

That seems doubtful at this juncture.

Patience, gentlemen!

You don’t have to (and, in fact, cannot) get it all back with one swing of the bat.

The way they're hitting us

I’m not sure the bad calls have made much difference. But I still think it might have back in the 4th.

by NCT on Jun 24, 2008 11:12 PM EDT reply actions

I guess it's not our night after that BS call

The only thing I want tomorrow night is a Georgia Tech like performance from the first pitch until the 27th out.

We have now entered . . .

. . . the territory hitherto occupied only by Albert Brooks’s historic attack of flop-sweat in “Broadcast News.”

At some point, it became so off-the-chart bad it just got funny.

by T Kyle King on Jun 24, 2008 11:14 PM EDT reply actions

We will need some gutsy pitching.

And it would help if they would stop drilling the ball over the fence or deep into the gap. That would really help.

by Hunker Down Dawg on Jun 24, 2008 11:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I just hope Moreau

Can bring some Greg Maddux-like stuff because it seems to me that Fresno has eaten up our average speed pitching. Fields and Holder have been the only two that have really dominated their hitters (granted Holder gave up some HRs but those were on mistake pitches)

I think we will need to score double digits to win.

It may take 14-15 runs. But, in inexplicable fashion, it may be a 3-2 ball game or something. Not likely however.

Ugly, ugly, ugly

And to think we seemed to have this game well and truly in hand in the early going.

Horrible, horrible outing.

That's the spirit

We still only need one win to claim the national championship.

This isn’t the taste the Diamond Dogs want in their mouths throughout the offseason. They knew that after Lipscomb, they knew that after the loss to N.C. State, and they know it now.

Once again, I thank you all for participating. Let’s meet back here tomorrow and end this one on a high note!
