College World Series Game Three Open Comment Thread

Welcome back to your College World Series open comment thread, Bulldog Nation!

After a day’s delay, the Diamond Dogs are facing off with the Stanford Cardinal in a rematch of Monday night’s contest. The game is slated to get underway at 2:00 this afternoon on ESPN.

After the fun we had during Monday night’s open thread, I know I don’t have to tell you to share your observations, exhortations, witticisms, and other reactions (as applicable) in the comments below, so have at it.

Go ‘Dawgs!

It's on . . .

. . . ESPN.

By which I mean, the actual ESPN, not ESPN2, ESPNews, etc.

At least they went three up . . .

. . . and three down in the bottom of the inning.

Come on, Bryce!

Also, can we see Lauren during his at-bat?

Drat . . .

. . . on the first count.

At least we got to see Lauren briefly.

Cerione's at-bat

Huh.

I wasn’t aware that home plate ended at the chalk line.

I guess I’d always thought the edge of the plate was, you know, the edge of the plate.

Terrible strike three call.

Go 'Dawgs!

It'd be nice

to get some more right here with the bottom of the order….we’ve been living on these guys lately

by SouthernDawg on Jun 21, 2008 2:34 PM EDT reply actions

Come on, come on, ESPN, give me something with which to work ...

Ok, I give up. It’s getting late in the game for my ESPN jab, and their kind words about Massanari’s grandmother might cancel it out, anyway.

by NCT on Jun 21, 2008 2:36 PM EDT reply actions

Another question

...anyone got a stab on why we’re the visiting team and we’re in the winners bracket???

by SouthernDawg on Jun 21, 2008 2:37 PM EDT reply actions

My vote is that we get everybody on the team . . .

. . . to smear their helmet with too much pine tar.

To answer your question, SouthernDawg, it’s so we will reserve the right to be the home team tomorrow if another game is needed.

I don’t buy that logic, but that’s the rationale.

Go 'Dawgs!

by T Kyle King on Jun 21, 2008 2:38 PM EDT reply actions

ok....

i guess i understand that…kinda like the same idea of going with Moreau instead of Holder today

by SouthernDawg on Jun 21, 2008 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Pine tar

I thought about getting a dedicated cap and some pine tar myself, but at my place, it’d get covered in dog and cat hair in seconds.

by NCT on Jun 21, 2008 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Don’t they flip for field position? Someone told me they did at some point…

Pitching pretty well

by Russell4u2 on Jun 21, 2008 2:47 PM EDT reply actions

whew

he sure is leaving a lot of pitches up today

by SouthernDawg on Jun 21, 2008 2:47 PM EDT reply actions

We got lucky . . .

. . . on that foul ball.

It just missed being a three-run shot.

I mean, it didn’t just miss like Massanari’s just missed the other night, but still.

Even more than I loved holding them to one run when they had the bases loaded with no outs and Jason Castro at the plate, I loved answering with two runs in the fourth to extend what was a slightly narrowed lead.

by NCT on Jun 21, 2008 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions

From Wikipedia

Duck Fart—-A softly hit ball that goes over the infielders and lands in the outfield for a hit. Originally called a “duck fart” because it was assumed that a duck’s feathers would make its farts as soft (or quiet) as the hit.

don’t gloat….

by 86Dawg on Jun 21, 2008 5:17 PM EDT up reply actions

i only gloat

during football season when we beat the crap out of auburn, tennessee, florida, tech, or south carolina

by rebeldawg63 on Jun 21, 2008 5:23 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah yeah

lsu against rice, etc. i know but seriously up by 6 top 9th fields possibly coming on to shut it down. its not gloating, looking at the facts.

I know

I know what you mean….it looks REAL good….but it sounded like a Jinx with a capital J

by Russell4u2 on Jun 21, 2008 5:19 PM EDT up reply actions

baseball gods don’t like it… be humble and gloat when it’s over!

by 86Dawg on Jun 21, 2008 5:20 PM EDT up reply actions

It's cool.

I feel good about it, too. And I’m generally not the supersitious type. But the facts are that Stanford has another inning to score, and nothing’s certain until the last out.

But yeah. Confidence in our closer is fine.

by NCT on Jun 21, 2008 5:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Ugly

That was an ugly at bat…..or an at bat that says…”Let’s get to the bottom of the ninth”

by Russell4u2 on Jun 21, 2008 5:18 PM EDT reply actions

if this

hangs on right here…i hope the freaking BOTTOM FALLS OUT

and then UNC wins game 1 tomorrow and they have to play a doubleheader, and then Fresno wins game 2

or, at the least, UNC wins game 1 tonight, and Fresno wins game 2 tomorrow

by SouthernDawg on Jun 21, 2008 5:19 PM EDT reply actions

and, uh

whats the reasoning of this pitching change??

there has to be a helluva story to change pitchers, down 6, with 2 out in the 9th and noone on

this might be good

by SouthernDawg on Jun 21, 2008 5:20 PM EDT reply actions

maybe it’s just to let this guy pitch since he’s a senior and to save the rep of Yount?

by 86Dawg on Jun 21, 2008 5:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Letting a Senior pitch for the last time

Makes sense to me.

until Monday, anyway.

I’m really glad he stayed for this year to help lead us to the CWS

So they are looking for the fastball. Plus he’s leaving it up and that makes it easier to drive out. The ump is killing us.

Wow! I thought Monday's comment thread was as good as it got!

I thank you, one and all, for making this afternoon’s comment thread better even than Monday night’s, both in terms of quantity of comments and of quality of participation.

As I said, I’m sorry I had to bail, but I had my parents, my aunt, and my 89-year-old grandmother coming into town this afternoon. We’re doing baptisms (as distinguished from confirmations; the terminology differs somewhat from one denomination to another) for both of my children at church tomorrow morning, which is why we had people coming into town today.

I thought it would work out great, what with the game being scheduled for Friday and all, but, as it was, the family got here with about two innings left, so we watched the rest of the game, then visited for a while and ate supper. A good time was had by all.

In any case, I appreciate the way all of you picked up the baton and ran with it. If this keeps up, Dawg Sports--meaning not just MaconDawg and me, but all of you, as well—will be among the nominees for Best Community at the C.F.B.A.s next winter, which is a goal of mine not for the award itself, but for what it represents.

Great job to everyone, on the field and on the internet. Oh, man, is there going to be some property destroyed in Omaha tonight!

Go 'Dawgs!
