College World Series Game Three Open Comment Thread
Welcome back to your College World Series open comment thread, Bulldog Nation!

After a day’s delay, the Diamond Dogs are facing off with the Stanford Cardinal in a rematch of Monday night’s contest. The game is slated to get underway at 2:00 this afternoon on ESPN.
After the fun we had during Monday night’s open thread, I know I don’t have to tell you to share your observations, exhortations, witticisms, and other reactions (as applicable) in the comments below, so have at it.
Go ‘Dawgs!

Cerione's at-bat
Huh.
I wasn’t aware that home plate ended at the chalk line.
I guess I’d always thought the edge of the plate was, you know, the edge of the plate.
Terrible strike three call.
Go 'Dawgs!
It'd be nice
to get some more right here with the bottom of the order….we’ve been living on these guys lately
Come on, come on, ESPN, give me something with which to work ...
Ok, I give up. It’s getting late in the game for my ESPN jab, and their kind words about Massanari’s grandmother might cancel it out, anyway.
Another question
...anyone got a stab on why we’re the visiting team and we’re in the winners bracket???
My vote is that we get everybody on the team . . .
. . . to smear their helmet with too much pine tar.
To answer your question, SouthernDawg, it’s so we will reserve the right to be the home team tomorrow if another game is needed.
I don’t buy that logic, but that’s the rationale.
Go 'Dawgs!
ok....
i guess i understand that…kinda like the same idea of going with Moreau instead of Holder today

Pitching pretty well
Seems to be doing well, but doesn’t seem to be able to locate a curve…does it seem that way to you all? Whew….foul thank goodness!
whew
he sure is leaving a lot of pitches up today
We got lucky . . .
. . . on that foul ball.
It just missed being a three-run shot.
I mean, it didn’t just miss like Massanari’s just missed the other night, but still.
Go 'Dawgs!
Defensive hitting...
I would have called that at-bat as good defensive hitting being down 0-2, but he jumped all over that!
I wish
they would stop jinxing us with how great our bullpen is
setting us up, guys…setting us up
Sweet!
Looked like he just missed that ball!

Up-to-bat intro music
Who knows all the up-to-bat intro music for the players when they play at Foley??
Awesome
Wow what a great hit! Left fielder needed some wheaties! Go Dawgs!
Lucky
Cannot believe he got him to swing on that! It’s great….surprising, but great!
Good jump in right
He doesn’t get a good jump on that ball and it’s 4-2 possibly 4-3. Good job!
Great!
Only 1 run out of a bases loaded, nobody out jam with their best hitter up…..I’d say that turned out just about as good as UGA could have hoped!
i dont think
too many people said “oh good grief, Lauren Massineri again? ::grin::
by SouthernDawg on Jun 21, 2008 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions
Hmmm
This walk of Bechkam only makes sense for them, but shouldn’t we have seen this coming and let Olson swing away? I think they just got the best of us by getting a free out and took away Beckham’s bat. I’m sure I’m missing why you would do that…can someone clue me in?
Joe, you are a damn good Dawg!
Even more than I loved holding them to one run when they had the bases loaded with no outs and Jason Castro at the plate, I loved answering with two runs in the fourth to extend what was a slightly narrowed lead.
Go 'Dawgs!
Stanford scored while I was cleaning the office… I better stay put! When you’re finished filing, my office needs your expertise.
During baseball
86 Dawg + being productive= bad
JoeinSavannah + being productive= good
I would prefer the other way around but I better stay busy. I’ll be over to your office in the top of the 5th.

duck fart
That is an interesting description
by JoeinSavannah on Jun 21, 2008 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions
It's an actual baseball term
Not from the rule books, mind you, but an accepted piece of the jargon. I love this game.
From Wikipedia
Duck Fart—-A softly hit ball that goes over the infielders and lands in the outfield for a hit. Originally called a “duck fart” because it was assumed that a duck’s feathers would make its farts as soft (or quiet) as the hit.

Yes!!!!
Great hit! What a terrible homerun call!
Sweet!
Give up one, take two back.
Give up two, take three back.
Come on, Stanford. Score three next inning. I dare you. I Diamond Dog dare you!
Go 'Dawgs!
Indeedee!
Nothing like responding to a little bit of adversity. Speaking of adversity, I’m out of beer.
Remember
It’s not about winning and losing…it’s about winning! Nice.
O.K., I was just kidding . . .
. . . about that “scoring three” thing.
Really, please don’t.
Go 'Dawgs!
I think
you just had to “take it back”, T Kyle
thats all there was to it!

...close enough to call in my opinion, last night the ump was calling rediculous pitches that broke outside, on both teams.
Crap now he gets on with an error.

i only gloat
during football season when we beat the crap out of auburn, tennessee, florida, tech, or south carolina
yeah yeah
lsu against rice, etc. i know but seriously up by 6 top 9th fields possibly coming on to shut it down. its not gloating, looking at the facts.
I know
I know what you mean….it looks REAL good….but it sounded like a Jinx with a capital J
It's cool.
I feel good about it, too. And I’m generally not the supersitious type. But the facts are that Stanford has another inning to score, and nothing’s certain until the last out.
But yeah. Confidence in our closer is fine.
Ugly
That was an ugly at bat…..or an at bat that says…”Let’s get to the bottom of the ninth”
if this
hangs on right here…i hope the freaking BOTTOM FALLS OUT
and then UNC wins game 1 tomorrow and they have to play a doubleheader, and then Fresno wins game 2
or, at the least, UNC wins game 1 tonight, and Fresno wins game 2 tomorrow
and, uh
whats the reasoning of this pitching change??
there has to be a helluva story to change pitchers, down 6, with 2 out in the 9th and noone on
this might be good
Letting a Senior pitch for the last time
Makes sense to me.

Can't get a strike call on the curve
So they are looking for the fastball. Plus he’s leaving it up and that makes it easier to drive out. The ump is killing us.

Thanks SouthernDawg
for keeping a running play by play over at Tiger Droppings. I appreciate it but my boss does not.
Wow! I thought Monday's comment thread was as good as it got!
I thank you, one and all, for making this afternoon’s comment thread better even than Monday night’s, both in terms of quantity of comments and of quality of participation.
As I said, I’m sorry I had to bail, but I had my parents, my aunt, and my 89-year-old grandmother coming into town this afternoon. We’re doing baptisms (as distinguished from confirmations; the terminology differs somewhat from one denomination to another) for both of my children at church tomorrow morning, which is why we had people coming into town today.
I thought it would work out great, what with the game being scheduled for Friday and all, but, as it was, the family got here with about two innings left, so we watched the rest of the game, then visited for a while and ate supper. A good time was had by all.
In any case, I appreciate the way all of you picked up the baton and ran with it. If this keeps up, Dawg Sports--meaning not just MaconDawg and me, but all of you, as well—will be among the nominees for Best Community at the C.F.B.A.s next winter, which is a goal of mine not for the award itself, but for what it represents.
Great job to everyone, on the field and on the internet. Oh, man, is there going to be some property destroyed in Omaha tonight!
Go 'Dawgs!
