Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

Two Thoughts

Congratulations to Rodney Garner, he interviewed for the Auburn job.  It'd be interesting to see what he could do over there.  I really like him as part of our staff, but I can't cheer AGAINST a guy getting that kind of chance.   The best of luck to him.

And second, I just saw Reshad Jones was named second team All-SEC.  What does that say about the SEC?

I need five more words.

I think the bigger question is . . .

what does it say about the SEC writters who voted him 1st team? These are the same chuckleheads (collectively, not individually, because some of them are actually very good at their jobs) who voted Julio Jones SEC Freshman of the Year over A.J. Green. I think they’re either a) dumb, b) lazy or c) imbued with a sense of humor that is absolutely off the charts. It’s gotta be C).

This might help you understand

Why Julio was chosen over Green.

When you are an Alabama fan you have to hate Auburn, I hate Tennessee because i want to.

Oh, I understand the rationale . . .

I just don’t agree with it. And would point out that Todd and the gang are just as much homers as I am (God bless them). And I think we can all agree that A.J. and Julio are going to make it a bad time to be an SEC db over the next couple of years.

Eh

I got no problem with Julio getting Freshmen of the Year over AJ Green. I think it’s really a tossup. Both are damn impressive.

I’ve had fantasies for about the last half of the year where we had both AJ and Julio lining up for the Dawgs as true freshmen. A team with both of those guys would’ve been crazy.

I don't really have a problem with the split.

Heck, I just figured it was their way of giving an honor to both players, since both of them had just as promising freshman seasons as were expected for them.

Agreed

It’s cognitive dissonance, but for a valid reason.

Go 'Dawgs!

Except that . . .

unless I misunderstand, the ballots are sent in individually by the writers and not the product of a committee. So there wouldn’t be an element of design to it, unless a bunch of them got together beforehand to figure out how to split the baby. And I’m assuming that our friends among the SEC journalism crowd have better things to do than that (like cover Jamar Hornsby stealing one of the available scholarships at Ole Miss) . The only other explanation would be myriad voters acting alone and in an internally inconsistent manner.

by MaconDawg on Dec 9, 2008 12:36 PM EST reply actions

I didn't mean to imply...

…that I thought the writers got together to vote. I just meant that if I was an impartial party with a vote, I might give 1st team to one and Frosh-of-the-year to the other as a way to honor both kids’ efforts.

Could it also be that

Jones was the primary WR on a undefeated team? A player who if Alabama did not have, probably doesn’t get there? The impact that Julio had on this offense is greater than Greens. Its not always about stats guys, its about impact.

When you are an Alabama fan you have to hate Auburn, I hate Tennessee because i want to.

Tell that...

. . . To the Heisman voters.
If impact matters, then give the Incumbent his second Heisman.

by Newsboys441 on Dec 9, 2008 3:07 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, that's . . .

definitely a valid rationale. I’m just saying that I think SEC Freshman of the Year is not “SEC MVP”. I think it should go to the best player, regardless of his impact on a particular team.

You can certainly make an argument for Julio, it’s just not one that I personally find as compelling as the argument for A.J. I think that if A.J. had not been on the same team with Mo Massaquoi (if he had been the primary receiver) he probably would have gone for more yards. Of course I do find Julio as FOY way more plausible than Reshad Jones as 1st team All-Sec safety, but I’m happy for Reshad nonetheless.

Exactly my thoughts

MaconDawg, I agree with you completely. If you care to check it out or join the discussion, I actually voiced it in the comments section over on roll bama roll here: http://www.rollbamaroll.com/2008/12/8/687154/julio-vs-a-j-green

Oh, and correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure Reshad was second team, not first team.
