Finally, New Kicker at Georgia....

I posted a note after the Florida game about Blair walsh, the kicking game in general and CMR unwilling to make a change. A number of you responded, thanks by the way, supporting CMR and Walsh. I warned you it would eventually cost us the game. It finally did.  The kickoff to start the second half of the Tech game sailed out of bounds fot the second time in the game and the tweith time this year. Tech scored on the next play and the Georgia players were totally shocked and deflated What a momemtum change. The whole stadium went quiet. CMR should have replaced Walsh for kickoffs after the Fl. game when Kevin Butler himself suggested he do so. But CMR arrogantly stuck with his first choice not wanting to admit a mistake. But  CMR finally has announced that backup kicker Jamie Lindley will assume lickoff duties for bowl game.  Better late than never I guess. Now, if he will only loose this "i'm right, you"re all wrong" arrogantt attitude, he might can bring this team to it's full potiential.

Oh, come on

One kickoff didn’t change the game. Hell, one play didn’t change the game. The defense didn’t show up. To pin the blame on a kicker is a major reach. However, it is obvious that the attempts at directional kicking were a burden all year. I’ve talked to people who would know why we stuck with it, and I still don’t get it. If Lindley is told to place the ball on the 10 along the sidelines, he has just as much a chance of kicking it out of bounds as Walsh did. Directional kicking was one of the more bizarre coaching choices this season. I’m glad that Lindley is going to be kicking off, but I just don’t understand why we won’t simply bomb kickoffs deep.

Let's not get carried away

I’m going to have to agree with SG on this one and say that, while I respect your position, I think you’re wrong. Had we been up by two points with thirty seconds left and the kickoff going out of bounds put Tech at the forty, giving them crucial field position and allowing them to get close enough to kick a field goal and win the game, then we could blame it (somewhat) on the kicking game. However, they scored on a sixty yard run. This had nothing to do with their field position after the kickoff. We most likely ran the same defense we would’ve run had we pinned them at the eighteen. Chances are, they would’ve simply scored on an 82 yard run as opposed to a sixty yarder. I, too, do not understand why we did not abort the directional kicking strategy and boom it towards the uprights, but then again, I’m not a special teams coach. Also, I agree that Tech scoring on the first play from scrimmage in the second half certainly changed the momentum in the game, but I think that the momentum completely shifted in their direction on a separate one play/one score drive after Samuel fumbled the kickoff.

Yeah . . .

that touchdown wouldn’t have counted for 6 points if it had been an 80 yard run instead. I forgot that is in the rulebook.

I share your frustration about our inability in the kicking game, but this one was a debacle on several levels. And unless you heard something different from what I did, Coach Richt did not say that Lindley would assume the kickoff duties. He said something to the effect of “we’re going to give him [Lindley] a look”. That’s pretty noncommital. Have I missed a different statement?

Say Wha Blackdawg?

Hey why make up “quotes”? CMR has only said he would take a look. Why you lyin?

Directional kickin is for the dogs, not the dawgs. Lindley or anyone else has just the same odds of it going out of bounds. DK is a dumb ass strategy that Coach Faz needs to change or get told ta change. It dont work. Look at the best teams; none of them have consistent luck with it…and luck is the key word. Talent has nothin to do with it; dumb luck.

Kick it deep and guys get yer butts down there. We need some speed on special teams more than a dumb ass directional kicking strategy.

Amen to that

I am with you on the DK nonsense – we continue to do it and kick it out of bounds, sometimes several times a game. I think we did it 3 or 4 times against FSU. Fortunately, their offense would struggle if they got the ball at our 10. Just kick the damn ball deep and go cover!!!!

Agree

Why don’t we do like everybody does to us and kick the ball right down the middle and watch their guys bump into each other before they try to return it??

Better yet, through the back of the endzone. Out of 30,000 students in Athens I have to believe that there is some guy who can bang it out of the end zone!!!

Funny you should say that

Richt actually has said that he is considering looking for a kicker from a JuCo who can consistently kick it out of the endzone. TotalUGA reported this:

"(We’re looking) even with the kickoff situation if he can boom it," he said. "If I knew he could literally kick it out of the end zone, I’d scholarship him." Richt said the thought of holding open tryouts for the student body might be a possibility, too.

I guess he is, indeed, listening to some of the complaints.

Redskins seem to do this same crap

with the stupid directional kicking. It’s painful to watch.

After a long day Saturday watching my boys kick it out of bounds, I don’t care to wake up the next day and see the same stupid directional kicking.

Let the kicker thats already on the team, jamie Lindley have a chance. His distance is 75+. I.richt needs to pay attention to his own team. Richtdiculous!!!!!! I heard he offered a schlorship to a JC kicker without even seeing him.
