Fire Willie Martinez now

Not at the end of the season, not tomorrow, not in 30 minutes.  Show him the door right now.  I've long been a Willie apologist in my posts here at Dawg Sports, but the showing on Saturday was the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back.  No way should an injury-depleted, freshman led Kentucky team put up 38 points on the board against us.  I don't care anymore if it's a matter of the players being in the right spots and not executing.  At some point, heads have to roll.  Willie is completely and utterly incapable of making adjustments during the game to what the other team is doing.  The defense that returned most of its players from last year is a former shell of itself.  During Willie's tenure, points allowed per game have increased each season.  In no way do I think Willie is a bad guy or even a bad coach.  But if you are judged by your performance, then I think it is fair to say that his on-job performance has not been where it should be.

Does anybody remember the D we had with Seymour and Stroud?

Or the Sean Jones return against UT, or the David Pollack Strip in Columbia, or Champ Bailey, Boss Bailey, Kendrell Bell, Thomas Davis, Odell Thurman, Greg Blue. . . I think the Curran/Allen play in Columbia falls into the same category, and time may show the Dobbs one handed pick does as well. That still doesn’t make me feel better though. I want Martinez to be successful, I know we all do, but what is with the decline in production. Is it the players, the scheme? It seems that we used be good on D and suck on offense under Goff/Donnan most of the time. I feel like the opposite is occuring these days. Kyle’s right, offense and special teams hasn’t helped any the past two weeks, but there was still some distance to be traveled. I don’t think it’s asking too much to have your defense stop a team of freshmen allstars when they have 30 yards to go to get into the endzone. Or at the very least, hold them to three. I don’t know what is up, but I trust CMR to figure this out at some point.

Remember it differently

The defense was pretty poor during the Goff era (see ‘93, ’94). And ironically, during the start of (offensive-minded) Richt’s tenure, it was the defense that was stellar and carrying the offense. Yes, Greene had some great games, but it was the defense that made the difference. And remember in Richt’s first few years, we had some huge plays on special teams- blocked punts, blocked FGs, big returns, etc. People were talking about us like we were the new VaTech.

I dont completely disagree, but

It is very hard to get an accurate picture of the Defense when we are constantly having to rely on them to come through this year due to the following: the weakest special teams unit fielded (imo) under CMR. Continual poor field position for us, with good field position for our opponent (especially against the Cats). Turnovers and INTs. Stafford/Bobo play action bomb for 3 and outs resulting in punts. Lack of red zone TDs, and even an unheard of series of missed FGs. And a simply unacceptable level of personal fouls and other unneeded penalities. There have been numerous times the D stopped an opponent, only to barely make it to the bench before they were going right back on the field.

Do I place blame for this on the coaching staff? Darn right. But I dont lay it all at Coach Martinez’s feet. This team has ungodly talent, but has yet to be a team. They lack leadership in the QB position (no lack of heart, talent, desire), this team was more concerned about the blackout and the W-L record than finishing the drill multiple times. Maybe we have too much talent. I really think CMR needs to have an offsight with next years seniors and captains and get down to earth about teamwork. They need to focus more on the moment at hand and let the results flow. The team as a whole may need some movitional speakers or lessons on teamwork and your roll in it.

I fully expect CMR will correct the special teams area by next year. I have always bragged on him that things like special teams are never something he lets beat us (or beat our selves). I am not sure who is coaching Stafford or has his ear, but he needs one Coach, and one coach only (and it’s not Coach Bobo IMO) to walk the dog with him and get his brain in tune with his arm – maybe he has too much input.

T Kyle is right, however, that we have two big games and a potential BCS at large on hand. I sincerely hope we beat Auburn 40-10, with 40 minutes of possesion.

The defense that returned most of its players from last year is a former shell of itself.

Well see, there’s your problem. In losing Marcus Howard, Jeff Owens, Kelin Johnson, Marcus Washington, Quintin Banks, and Danell Ellerbe (for half the season), we are in fact a shell of that defense.

That’s an awful lot of talent, heart, leadership, and experience missing.

I agree with that portion of it

I really took offense to Coach Richt’s comments this week about the heat that Coach Martinez is taking from the fans. Coach Richt got really defensive and seemed to take shots at what I can imply he thinks is the casual fan or someone that doesn’t know much about football. I’d like to think I know a little about football and my beef with this team isn’t a scheme issue or a lack of blitzing issue. I’m sure we’re doing all that. And I’m sure that the players are in the right places to make plays. My questions is, what is keeping them from making those plays?? This team just lacks a killer instinct and it is very undisciplined fundamentally (i.e. missing tackles, blown coverages, stupid momentum changing penalties, etc.) Some of this isn’t directly related to schemes or play calling. At some point though, leaders have to bite the bullet. There’s no reason for these miscommunications, missed tackles, and undisciplined play in week 10 against a guy making his first career start. You got to believe Paul Johnson is licking his chops watching that game film seeing that we are utterly incapable of defending the triple option. I certainly hope that Coach Martinez can correct this and this season is just a blip on the radar. I just implore Coach Richt to look beyond blind loyalty and think of what’s best for the program. If a change is necessary don’t let Coach Martinez become our Jeff Bowden.

Forgot to add in the injuries

In my post above that has a laundry list of various problem, I should have added in injuries as well. It is definately a resonable factor to include.

Fire Martinez

Amen !! He has to go for Georgia to ever compete for a National Championship.

We were pretty close to competing for the MNC last year.

I would say we would have been the sole SEC East champs, had Stafford seen a wide open Tripp Chandler in the USC game. But, hey, the past is the past.
