Georgia Bulldogs v. Kentucky Wildcats Game Day Open Comment Thread
Georgia Bulldogs at Kentucky Wildcats, Nov 8, 2008 12:30 PM EST
At long last, game day is upon us! Hopefully, the Bulldogs will be able to get back on the winning track in Lexington this afternoon, and, as you cheer the Red and Black on, please feel free to share your comments on the contest in Commonwealth Stadium, and on all the day’s college football action, below.
This also marks the occasion for naming this week’s Dawg Sports honorary game day captain. Today’s honoree is none other than Rex Robinson, whose 29-yard field goal with three seconds remaining on the clock enabled the 1978 "Wonderdogs" to overcome a onetime 16-7 deficit and claim a 17-16 victory over Kentucky on the road.
The Georgia team that took the field 30 years ago did not win a national championship, just as the Georgia team that takes the field this year will not . . . but Robinson would go on to a stellar career, one that included an extra point in Knoxville to give the ‘Dawgs the 16-15 win that began the 1980 national championship drive.
Go ‘Dawgs!

"Bob that head"
I think its very appropriate for Raycom to be sponsored by Rascall Flats. And its very appropriate to play that song as we are in Kentucky.
Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win.

Well that was efficient
About 7 plays for 65 yards in less than 2 minutes. That’s the way we needed to respond!

Correction
That was only 4 plays for 65 yards!

Make that 4 plays
with a decent return. I have to say that TD play would have probably left Stafford on his back vs anyone else.
In what way?
Were their breakdowns in protection?

Playcalling looks more sensible today
Nothing fancy just doing what we do best. It does seem we are throwing it more until we got close the the endzone on that last TD play.

If they expect us to run in the redzone...
we can pass. Obviously, no one has been expecting us to run down there.
WWhat do you guys think the odds are . . .
That we could end up in the Cotton Bowl, as opposed to the Cap One. I know that will require winning out, and that the Cotton Bowl usually picks a West team, but I think would enjoy seeing a Big 12 match up in the Cotton.
by dawgdayafternoon on Nov 8, 2008 12:54 PM EST reply actions
i dont know the bowls well enough to know -
but i would be very happy with a Cotton bowl and a big 12 opponent. none of us want a Cap One.
Oh – and if they put a Patsy up against the dogs in a bowl again this year – Richt will run the score up 70-0 this time.
Really?
The sound of the Cotton Bowl seems fun…until a Big 12 team starts passing on our secondary. I would prefer a drive to Dallas than Orlando, but I feel “safer” about matching up against the Big 10.

Good job of Moreno of driving through the "attempted" tackles
I say attempted bc none of the defenders tried to wrap him up, they looked like they were just trying to knock him over, Moreno has good balance, and trying to merely knock him over is not smart or sound tackling. Sea of Blue mentioned that they were having trouble tackling.

It would be nice to play someone besides Iowa
or Purdue. Man, I’d love to play OSU. Any chance of that??
Cobb is pretty elusive, and looks to be making good decisions for a freshman.
V dawg, I think OSU has to lose to Illinois for us to see that. I am thinking we win out, we play Michigan State in the Cap One.

Obviously... we need them in 3rd and

I have a hard time seeing how we have been ranked so hig against the run.
It seems like we have been repeatedly gashed in several games this year, and I am concerned what we’ll do against Yech’s triple option.

We are a wall sometimes

Hope we keep scoring because that was demoralizing. Our defense needs help. We looked caught off guard on 2 out of every 3 plays on that drive.

A different thought -
Can we go hire Elway for 6 months to work with Stafford? I dont think Bobo can coach him, Staffords arm is beyond most people’s understanding. Stafford needs to find balance and poise along with his God given talent. And Bobo needs to stop throwing the bomb.
I just don't get the playcalling
3 straight passes, Run on 3rd and 8 (be careful what you wish for), go for it on 4th and 6.

I dont know what is going on with it - but somethign is simply not right
Stafford uses his arm as his brain, and then the play calling just doesnt make sense. Something isn’t right. I thought Bobo was the QBs coach – but i spend a lot of time in Iraq and sometimes miss these things.
My God
That was a pathetic series from the Kentucky 38….
Why oh why oh why do we keep running the play action deep on first down…. has that play worked once all year long?
What is Bobo thinking? Seriously?
It has to boggle everyone's mind
That we can score effortlessly in four plays in the very first series of the game, and then get the ball at the opponents’ 38, and proceed to move it 4 yards in 4 downs…
It just doesn’t make sense.
The yech game is gonna be frustrating
if this is how we handle option/running QB’s

Are we just really
not that good?? Is that a possibility? LMAO because I’ve never really considered it.
NO
We just havent had a “team” under this class. We havent had spirit, leadership and it seems at times the players are more worried about wearing black then finishing the drill. But they have the talent, and CMR is an outstanding coach. We may have too much talent – a lot of these guys come from HS programs that never lose a game. They don’t seem to respond well to adversity. They dont maintain composure.
CMR needs to take this team on an offsight – or find some team building exercises.
Our defense has looked pretty sorry.
They just haven’t played one single dominating game this year. They look like they have no confidence.

I don't think Stafford has the kind of personality to really get in peoples faces.
He’s not the cheerleader/motivator that Tebow is. He has a more laid-back personality, at least that’s the vibe i get when he’s being interviewed after games. Not saying he never does, but i just don’t see him doing that a whole lot.

no one is bigger than 99 on the whole field, and he is wearing all that purple, i dont knwo how he thought he coudl throw it through him.

I'VE GOT IT, I'VE GOT IT
It just hit me. I know what they look like. They look like they’re playing a game of pick up football and they just picked this team 15 minutes before the game started. That is exactly what this team looks like.
Stafford makes those throws...
…. and it makes you shake your head in disbelief. Then he makes backbreaking bad throws. This guy is the next Brett Favre.

nice run, Knowsh
but can out D contain them? Please!
That was huge to get the momentum back after the blocked punt.
Now the D needs to hold. We so could use a three and out right about now.

TD in the red zone??
To quote a famous person you might have heard of, “That’s change I can get behind”.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
Michael Moore..
will be a star in the NFL. He will sacrifice his body to catch a football, and is not afraid to run through the middle for a play. And he has tat’s.
The Dawgs Need -
Stafford to be the leader. But it doesnt seem to be in his character. He is slow on his reads and tries to force plays with his arm. He needs to be coached by someone that can relate to his abilty, which isn’t Bobo. Moreno continually breaks through and makes plays, only to be let down. Moreno displays character, but this team is going to have to be led by the QB.
The D is, again, flat, and continually out of place, always on the wrong side of the block, feet out of position, etc. The D needs to find some unity and get electrified.
Other scores
Tennessee just scored a TD to cut the Wyoming lead 6 in the 3rd quarter. No, that’s not a typo. Tennessee was down 13-0 at the half.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
What in the hell...
was Miller doing trying to run that back???? Just fall on the damned ball.

this is bizarro last year
You've got to be kidding me..
How many 12 yard QB draws can you give up?
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
No, last year after we got hit in the mouth against Tenn and Vandy
We played really good football. Nothing like this. This is borderline pathetic
I think our defense needs to show some resolve.

Somebody wake me when it’s over

Didn’t Woodson graduate last year? Aren’t their best skill players injured!?
Let me revise that
The players are way too talented to have this happening. It has to reflect on the coaches at some point.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
Though we have had injuries--a LOT
This is absolutely ridiculous. I am really at a loss for words right now.
It appers no one prepared for the possibility of an option-style attack
I don’t know if it’s lack of coaching or what…but simply put we’re getting blown off the ball.
Our defense and special teams have been absolutely pathetic in this game.

*sigh*
They’re a field goal away from scoring on us as much as Bama did. They’ve already equaled LSU.
I… I’ve got nothing. I just don’t understand.
Definitely.
I just never expected such a massive breakdown on several fronts to come like this. Especially now.
Recap, and correct if I'm wrong:
UK has a
-backup QB
-their top two playmakers from an already pedestrian offense are injured.
Yet, this. This is ridiculous.
I am officially on the Martinez has to go bandwagon.
And it makes me feel like crap, I don’t like wishing for heads to roll, but c’mon. Injuries are no excuse for this. Look at the trend of declining defensive effectiveness over the past few seasons. Call me a whining fairweather fan if you will, but I am not. I just expect my team to be well coached and not give up a billion rushing yards to a mediocre UK offense loaded with freshmen.

Loran Smith: "Well Larry, I'm down here with Charles Grant...and he just loves boiled peanuts!"
Larry Munson: "Good stuff, Loran"
Anybody get the impression
that Stafford is a Big XII qb stuck on an SEC team? The way he goes for the big play?
Yowzers
Helluva game, gentlemen.

I don't even care if we win this game
To give up a 13 play drive to Kentucky and allow them to dominate the front seven for most of the game is inexcusable. Just think of what Florida did to this UK team and then look at what is happening in our game.
Martinez: gotta go
Larry Munson: "Whaddya got for us Loran?"
Loran Smith: "Well Larry, I'm down here with Charles Grant...and he just loves boiled peanuts!"
Larry Munson: "Good stuff, Loran"
Wow. If Munson was calling that he would have had a heart attack.
AJ Greene made that – that was a horrible place to throw the ball.
Over the hat
That’s the point exactly. AJ was amazing on that catch, but Stafford kept it alive with his feet and throwing the ball where only AJ could touch it. Either way, it’s a Dawgs TD, so good for us. Hunker down Dawgs!

CMR said heck of a play, but he was mad at him for how it happened
But I am happy for the TD of course )
Sir:
It’s spelled AJ Green.
Larry Munson: "Whaddya got for us Loran?"
Loran Smith: "Well Larry, I'm down here with Charles Grant...and he just loves boiled peanuts!"
Larry Munson: "Good stuff, Loran"
AJ BRYANT FOR THE WIN

We left a lot of time on the clock.
Let’s hope that our ’D can hold them.
UK isn't really a quick strike O

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think I’m going to CCCCCCCCRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you, Demarcus Dobbs
For playing well despite complete ineptitude from you defensive coaches.

I'VE HAD 8 HEART ATTACKS
OUR TEAM PLAYED TERRIBLY
WE DON’T LOOK VERY GOOD
HATS OFF TO KENTUCKY
- I LOVE YOU
A WIN IS A WIN
CAPS LOCK AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
And thank Raycom for that TD from last week
That was a missed PI call

Way to rub it in, Raycom
Right after a terrible game with a wild finish, they decide to show the “pass play of the week” from j-ville.
Can't put this one on Bobo
I’m giving a Bobo a pass this year considering the mess our OL is in, but there is NO excuse in Willie’s defense. I’ll update these numbers, but it was ugly just going into this game and they’ll look even worse after this: http://gatriguy.blogspot.com
I dont know if it is Bobo or Stafford, but the continual
play action bomb causing a 2nd and 10, followed by a run leading to 3rd and long is not a good game plan. Maybe Bobo does a good job, maybe not. But the play action bomb x 10 formula doesnt rest well with me. If our Defense is struggling and we are in a shootout – how about control the ball and clock a little? I now Stafford can throw the ball 1/2 a mile, and our RVCR core is better this year than ever, but I would like to see poise and control and work the game, not the heave ho over and over.
well if Phat Phill hadnt been fired this week
he would’ve been fired this week! lol

I repeat I think we've got to shake up the coaching staff a little.
Last play sure felt alot like the finish to the South Carolina game, minus the respectability of our defensive performance.

Richt will say that it was the execution, that the scheme was fundamentally sound, etc.
I don’t think this will be enough for Richt to make that kind of decision.

Enjoy your afternoon, folks.
Hopefully it will be more relaxing than the last three and a half hours.

Noble victory, Dawg fans.
Congratulations. Good luck for the rest of the season. I pray your injuries are minor.

Unlike last week - I take this opponent comment at face value
Very Classy Truzenzuzex. There is no bad blood between the Cats and the Dawgs and the Wildcat program getting stronger is good for all of us.
Thanks, man.
Losing sucks, but life goes on. You guys just found a way, and on the road in the SEC, sometimes that is the main thing.

Good game, Tru
As always, you’re a class act who runs a first-class blog.
Congratulations on the first-rate effort today. After Georgia went up 14-0, it looked like the Wildcats were in for a long day, but they more than made a game of it.
With the improvement Kentucky, South Carolina, and Vanderbilt have shown in recent seasons, the S.E.C. East has become the most bruising division in college football, with the arguable exception of the Big 12 South.
We’ll see y’all in Athens next fall.
Go 'Dawgs!
Thanks, Kyle.
All the best to the Denizens of Dawgdom. For us, maybe next year. You have an awesome blog and really great readers.
Best of luck the rest of the way.

Thanks again to everyone who showed up to take part!
I’m sorry I had to bail out early, but I had family in town again (my folks visited last weekend, my in-laws visited this weekend).
As always, y’all did a fine job chronicling the ups and downs of the game. I’m just glad the ups, in the end, overcame the downs.
And now . . . hate week begins. I hate Auburn.
Go 'Dawgs!
It seems like we just started
and now the &(# from Auburn are on the slate. If there ever, ever, ever, was a year to just beat the holy hell out of them, this is the year. They suck, we have talent. Their coach is an asshat idiot, our couch is both a great man and very successfull. It probably won’t happen – but there is no reason we don have a 40-10 game.
I hate auburn. *()#$()#)#$ tards
Geogia vs Kentucky Nov. 7 2008 game
That was a heck of a game! However, I failed to record it. Does anybody have a copy of this game that I could purchase from them? Thanks.
