EARLY LEAVERS
After the embarrasing loss to Tech, both Knowshon Moreno and Matthew Stafford were addressed about leaving for the NFL draft. Neither gave a definant yes or no, but both had relative answers. Both tried to ignore the question then finally answered with, i will have to talk about it with my family and coaches. i really havent thought about it though.
Knowshon Moreno leaving is completely predictable. He really literally and figuratively carried the bulldogs to the Sugar Bowl last year but was completely disrespected by Mike Bobo with his very minimal carries this year and letting Stafford be the "playmaker." I realize he pulls himself but if he is in there is no reason not to do the easiest thing in football and just hand the ball off. In all GA's losses this season a very common thing is Moreno under 20 carries and under 100 yards. There have been many speculations that he was injured in some games but if that is the case just come out and say it. He is truly the most dynamic back in the nation and can change the momentum and outcome with just one handoff.
Matthew Stafford headed to the NFL draft i just dont see happening. He is the top dawg right now(which i dont like) that determines the outcome for UGA right now. Quaterbacks are notorious for staying and this year has really been an outbreak year for him with all the extra opportunities he has been given. While receivers bail him out a lot, he is an outstanding quaterback. He has unlimited ability but still has some maturing to do before he is NFL ready.

If Rex Grossman is N.F.L. ready . . .
. . . then Matthew Stafford is N.F.L. ready.
They’re both gone. Neither stands to improve his draft stock considerably with another year in college and this is their last chance to bolt and not be hampered by the rookie salary cap. Yes, I’d love to see them stay, but that’s purely selfish on my part.
I wish them well, I thank them for the memories, and I will root for them at the next level, but, in my mind, they’ve been gone for a while now. The beauty of being a pessimist is that you’re always either proven right or pleasantly surprised.
Go 'Dawgs!
Stafford is thinking -
another year of no rings – or $50million. I dont think he bled red and black from the start, and that concept, coupled with money vs another year of disappointment (in his mind) = GONE.
I think this has reached a point of being despicable...
tanker – I usually enjoy your posts as they are insightful and well thought out. I’m absolutely sick of the argument that Stafford isn’t a real Bulldawg or doesn’t bleed red and black anyways so the decision to go pro is easier. Stafford has been a damn good Dawg the last three years and has won or kept us in many games over the last two years. It’s unfortunate that during his time he went up against the juggernaut that is Florida and Tim Tebow. You know who else had problems with Florida? I think his Bulldawg status, or lack thereof as many have argued here, has nothing to do with his choice to enter the draft. Matt Ryan got $34M last year guaranteed. I think if you waved that type of money at David Greene, who by all accounts bled red and black, after his junior year, there’s a strong possibility he doesn’t return for his senior year. Please stop taking shots at Stafford’s lack of Bulldawg and look at the facts. $34 million is $34 million. That’s just tough to pass up and I can’t blame the kid for it.

it's my opinion - it doesnt have to be personal. I dont think UGA came first for a lot of the players this year.
and i respect your posts very much as well….)
But I never saw Staffford getting together with the team, working with the players, i saw him use is arm as his brain, repeatedly. But – i am not in the dorms or the practice field, and i maybe wrong.
I dont mind you calling me out Audit Dawg – a good calling out from the right place is respectable – from you, i appreciate it.
Sorry if that came across as a personal shot
I, like you, am not in the dorms or on the practice field. Therefore, our beliefs are purely speculative. I just think that the argument of lack of care for the team or the university has become a weak cop out. Maybe the guy only came to Georgia because of Coach Richt and never developed a true love for the school like the Davids or Cory Phillips. But then again maybe he does really care and he doesn’t get like Tim Tebow in front of a crowd fighting back tears to let everyone know how he feels. I sure hope he and Knowshon decide to stay, but I honestly can’t blame them given the current economic crisis, potential for injury, and the impending rookie salary scale. I didn’t mean to call you out personally, it was a response to many similar posts I’ve seen in the last few months.

The other way around
I respectfully disagree, EMAN09. I think it’s Knowshon that would be more likely to stay than Stafford. (I agree with Kyle, though, that they’re probably both gone in any case.)
Even though he has shown remarkable ability and talent at making cuts, Moreno is relatively undersized for the NFL, and he has shown that he doesn’t have the best speed. (He needs downfield blocks to really break a long play. He only had one long run this year without downfield blocking, and that was the play in the LSU game when the secondary ran right past him on a blitz and he broke the one tackler that was between himself and the endzone.) Sure, he has made an art form out of turning a no-gain play into a 3-yard rush, but I’m just not convinced that this translates into a first-round draft pick. Typically, if you’re not pretty much guaranteed of a first-round pick, you don’t come out early (if you’re smart).
Stafford, on the other hand, will be the first QB taken in the draft, I think. Even though he has a tendency to overthrow his receivers on every deep ball, he has the body every NFL scout is looking for. He’s big, strong, and smart. He isn’t afraid to stand in the pocket chuck the ball 40 yards downfield, but he has also shown that he has the quick decision-making skills to check down and throw it off to his #2, 3, or 4 options when he needs to. Stafford will be making the big $$ after he goes in the high first round, so I’d say it’s a forgone conclusion he’ll be bolting.
I hope I’m wrong, though!
Stafford
I agree. Lest be honest with ourselves he came to UGA so he wouldn’t have to carry the clipboard at Texas behind McCoy. He’s been a great QB but I son’t see him coming back and spending time on the sidelines after he’s gone. I’m more concerned with next season without him. If my calculations are correct Cox will have year left and he throws some nice balls (Colorado game a few years ago is any indication and the best pass in the Florida game this year) we’ll be O.K. Is anyone concerned that Logan Gray has digressed down the path of Blake Barnes??
I might be concerned with that . . .
if he’d taken more than a dozen snaps all season. One consequence of all the closer than expected games this season is that we haven’t seen Cox or Gray very much. Right now Joe has significantly less live action under his belt than D.J. Shockley at this stage in his career. This worries me greatly, among other things.
Experience Counts
I agree with MaconDawg. If Stafford were to stay, I think we would have all of the pieces to make a potential national championship run in ‘09. If/When Stafford leaves, though, we’ll be having a QB line up behind center that has effectively no recent game experience. Joe Cox did save our bacon vs. Colorado in 2006, but that was 2 years ago, and was just 1 game.
If there’s 1 thing that has been a repeated theme over and over, it’s that teams don’t make championship runs with starters at QB that didn’t already have significant playing time previously. And who’s to say Joe Cox wouldn’t get beat out by Logan Gray? (And why do you say that Gray is going down the path of Blake Barnes, dahlonegadawg? He has been the backup behind the 2 upperclassmen, and there’s no way he would have been able to overtake Stafford even if he was better than Cox. And hey, he has been very good at fair-catching virtually every punt that has come his way this year. We would just have to hope he didn’t fair-catch the ball every time he lined up in the shotgun.)
All sarcasm aside, if we don’t have Stafford next year, we’ll be missing the one lynchpin that could have made next year’s team a strong candidate to be a champion. I think that having an inexperienced QB will cost us at least 1 or 2 games, unfortunately.

Logan Gray
Vineyard, I’m remembering that Barnes was moved around to “try” some other positions. I might be wrong and could be thinking about someone else. As a former “skill” position player it always gets in your head if the coach wants to let you “try” a position outside of your norm. I saw Gray make some impressive plays in the G-day game and I don’t think he came to Georgia to return punts. I know CMR says he “wants to be involved” but I think that, just like Barnes, he came here to be a QB. This is a long way from Missouri to “fair catch” punts. Who knows what’s in his head, but I’d hate to see another 4 star player who doesn’t get a chance to play his natural position which I’m hoping is still QB. Maybe Muntzenmeyer (Sp?) is the next David Greene and we’ll have no worries.

Well since Munzenmeier is a FB....
I doubt he will be the next David Greene.
If you are refering to Zach Mettenberger (I can never spell his name right) or Aaron Murray who are both coming to UGA next year then you might as well wait until 2010. Joe Cox will be the starter next year with Logan Gray coming in for a “change of pace”. I suspect that Murray will redshirt due to the fact he is recovering from a broken leg. Mettenberger will probably be the #3 next year just to give them some space between the two.
As to an “inexperienced” QB not winning an national title…..how many starts did Tee Martin have before ’98? I believe that would be ZERO (although I could be wrong)
