Georgia Bulldogs v. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Game Day Open Comment Thread

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at Georgia Bulldogs, Nov 29, 2008 12:00 PM EST

Now that the Bulldogs are done with their lengthy trip away from Athens, it’s time once again to tee it up between the hedges! Feel free to join in the conversation by posting your thoughtful critiques, visceral reactions, and emotional exclamations in the comments below.

This is also the occasion for announcing this week’s honorary game captain. Honestly, it seemed to me that there could be only one choice for this distinction:

Star-divide

Go ‘Dawgs!

Just stopped our drive:
1. False start = 3 & 13
2. Missed block = sack = Tech’s ball w/ good field position

As I say week after week - and I see it today

How do you blame the defense – when Tech has started on their 40 twice now? We need HUGE special teams improvement before we can evaluate the defense.

by tankertoad on Nov 29, 2008 12:39 PM EST reply actions

Not good

I think Tech’s DL is forcing Stafford to throw early and off time

by fotodog on Nov 29, 2008 12:43 PM EST reply actions

I really hope someone was running the wrong route on that one

Stafford threw that one in an area w/nothing but Tech players.

The weather in Athens is miserable

I couldn’t afford a ticket today, but the weather is so bad I don’t know if I could have enjoyed myself.

I hope...

the collar tackle, the late push and all this stuff the Techies are doing to Moreno and pisses him off and he runs like a man possessed.

by fotodog on Nov 29, 2008 12:51 PM EST reply actions

The horse collar tackle

What a BS rule. It’s only a rule in writing. I haven’t seen it enforced once this year.

Yep

If we get the blocking and don’t make stupid mistake (penalties/turnovers), Tech won’t be able to handle us

Okay, we're even

They didn’t call the horse collar on that tackle.

That should favor us

as long as stafford doesn’t throw anymore pick 6’s.

He's probably the only guy who can reliably catch the ball

And on a wet day, you need a guy to NOT mess that up and create a TO. We don’t have to have a return, just to recieve the ball on the punt, and let the offense get the yards.

This could be a huge part of the game

Tech hasn’t really sustained anything all day. However, they are no where near out of this game. If we give them a 3 and out here, we could see a huge momentum shift. Our offense just needs to keep putting up points and we must hope for a turnover or two

If we do hire a new Defensive Coach (which i honestly doubt)

He must be able to teach discipline and rip into players when they screw up, the problem with the D this year is undisciplined play, that’s the biggest failure of Martinez.

Defense and Special Teams Choke... again

Our defense has gotten progressively worse every year since we lost BVG. Could it be any more obvious that it is time to make a change?

And we need someone to coach special teams who can actually treat it like it is “special.”

Why in the heck were we utterly unable to stop them at all in the second half? Unreal.

Why were we repeatedly catching KOs at the 2? LET IT GO!!!! DUH

There's too much talent for

this team to lose like this. Do you all understand this?? We are ahead of Meyer’s team in recruiting. Way ahead of GT in recruiting!!!!!!!!!! Does anyone besides me realize this??? This is UNACCEPTABLE!!! Zook was gone for losing consistently to his rivals. The only reason we stopped a 2 game losing streak to UT is because they are so bad they lost to Wyoming. Willie should be gone!!! Right NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by VDawg on Nov 29, 2008 4:23 PM EST up reply actions

I had forgotten how much this sucked...

I am appalled at the outcome of this game. To score 42 points and not win this game hurts like hell. The “tackling” was spotty (decent in the first half, non-existant in the second), and our special teams play continues to boggle my mind. Every time Richard Samuel has touched the ball, I’ve worried something bad will happen. Today it did, and it cost us, what, 8 points?

MoMass was outstanding, Stafford was incredible, the offense was just insane. To have such an outstanding effort wasted infuriates me. It’ll be a long time before we’re able to string together 8 in a row again, and that’s another reason I’m incredibly disappointed right now.

Finally, I’m concerned about our bowl performance already. In 2001 we pouted about bad bowl selections and got beaten by BC. What’s to stop us from moping to a bowl this year and getting pantsed by a Big 10 team?

by Father Dawg on Nov 29, 2008 4:26 PM EST reply actions

42 points scored

When a team scores 42 points it has no business losing the game. Willie must go now. This was not the work of untimely turnovers or poor special teams that gave the offense a short field. The defense continually showed an inability to adjust to the difficulty that is a freaking toss sweep. The defense couldn’t tackle today and was continually gashed. I’m sure Willie is a fine coach, but at some point the results have to equal the pay grade, which right now they certainly are not. For the good of the program, I hope he does what Sly Croom did and resigns tomorrow.

Maybe we should start a letter writing campaign to Damon Evans?

I truely DO NOT want to become “that fan” that bitches about everything and demands once a week that Coach X be fired…..but come on something is obviously wrong on the Defensive side of the ball. Coach Richt defended Willie a few weeks ago and said that (and I am paraphrasing here) “the philosophy hasn’t changed since he came here in 2001” and “it was more of an execution than a scheme thing”.

After a season that started with such big expectations and ended with a loss to a good but not great Tech team, something has to change. It is starting to look like 2007 was an abberation and we are more like the 2006 & 2008 teams, which isn’t good at all.

by RocketDawg on Nov 29, 2008 4:38 PM EST reply actions

Post Script...

This team was 3 plays away from being 6-6 or 7-5…..unbelieveable with that amount of talent.

by RocketDawg on Nov 29, 2008 4:39 PM EST reply actions

If you took a good look at Richt's face

at the end of the game, you would see the pure frustration and almost fear in his eyes. Make no mistake, he knows what he has to do. I promise you, he knows. But will he do it?? If he doesn’t, he has one year. I predict this is a 6 and 5 team next year. No kidding. This team will not get better on defense because it has nothing to do with injuries or personnel. The defense is WRONG!!! UGA doesn’t give up 45 points to GT. Even Miami held them to less than that. Bobo stays. With an O line healthy and ready, they are unstoppable, This defense is HORRIFIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. Look at UF right now. They don’t look like USC when it comes to talent. They look like they don’t miss assgnments, they tackle and they execute. Plain and simple. We can’t and never will do that with Willie!!!

I love how the media says we are wrong for calling Richt out!! This is an extremely talented UGA team that is significantly underperforming. BTW, Reshad Jones and Willie Martinez just lost this game for us. There is no denying this. Look at the replays. Reshad REFUSED TO TACKLE and Willie’s D REFUSED TO DO WHAT THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO WHEN THEY NEEDED TO!!!!!! If they worked for me they would be fired and would get the worst employment reference that could be given. Willie is a high school DCO at best. AT BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dawgs loss to Tech

Absolutely, everyone should be on notice! We have great talent and zero discipline. Coach needs a gut check. He needs to take responsibility, create a sense of discipline and make these guys work. This team has played unacceptable ball for the amount of talent. We lost every game that mattered!

by 80dawg on Nov 29, 2008 5:35 PM EST up reply actions

That 4-4 scheme was the best thing CWM could come up with.....

…..with TWO WEEKS of prep time on PJ’s flexbone? And not just that, but no adjustment. Not a single adjustment at the half to defend the pitch-man or the motion sweep. What’s wrong with designating a man to attack the pitch-man on every single play, regardless of whether or not he gets the football. The only two times I saw that happen, Reshad made great plays for little to no gain. The rest of the game, it destroyed us. For as well as the front four played defending the dive and the LB’s played defending the QB run/follow, our DB’s did a piss-poor job of defending the most dangerous playmakers on their team. And why, oh why, were we still playing a deep safety in the 4th quarter? They threw the ball six times and only completed one! What’s wrong with playing zero coverage and risking that they make a play or two in the passing game? Sure seems like a better idea than defending the option flat-footed and giving up 400+ yards to a team with considerably less talent…..

Sad day for the Dawgs…..I feel bad for Staff and MoMass today…..they played their hearts out…..

Very unGeorgia-like

Post-Thanksgiving shopping has kept me from watching this game which was a blessing despite the fact that my alma mater lost pitifully. 45-42, a Georgia loss. Wow! We loss to the techies who lost to a bad Virginia team and a mediocre North Carolina team (although I have great respect for the UNC as a whole). What an embarrassment! This is the first time I’ve seen UGA loss while scoring more than 40 points! We knew that GT was going to run their pansies off and we can’t stop the run? This defense has been the worst I’ve seen since I entered UGA from 2002 to 2005, and I thought those few years were the Golden years for the Georgia football team. This is a defense nightmare! Someone has to be accountable. For all of us who wanted Willie to be fired including myself, I’m afraid he’s not going anywhere. Coach Mark Richt most likely would not let that happen for now. Ole Willie will be back next season for us to potentially see Georgia lose more games when we score 30 or more points.

This year by far has been one of the worst years I’ve experienced, and we’re not just talking football. Bad economy, rising unemployment, high energy and food prices, and now, Georgia loss to its little brother. Looks like everything is coming together! Thus, the fact that we loss to our biggest rival was no surprise. To make matters worse, I’m not looking forward to the 09 season for three reasons.
1. You think our schedule was tough this year. Our schedule next year will be even tougher. We have OK State to start out the season followed by a resurging SC team, LSU, and a bitter Auburn team for our home games. Don’t forget we have to play Florida as well as GT again. Realistically, if we don’t fix our problems, more chances for UGA to lose AT HOME which in my opinion is a big embarassment and for us to lose more games! Optimistically, I see a 8-4 season next year, but if we play as childishly as we played today, I see a 5-7 season and no bowl game.

2. We might have another quarterback controversy, and I’m not surprised if we see another true freshman at the helms again. However, I do have some optimism that the next guy, I think his name is Aaron Murray, will achieve more success than what Stafford did when he was a true freshman.

3. Our team next season may be as unfocused and undisciplined as this year’s. Clearly, discipline is one of the big reasons for our embarrassing losses this year. Erratic plays, unfocused mentality, too many personal fouls, can I go on any further? When BVG ran the defense, the only time I saw the defense gave up more than 30 points and we lost was during the 03 SEC championship game. Now, its almost like an every week occurrence. As far as special teams, we clearly have one of the worst special teams in the SEC right now. Somehow, we haven’t allowed any touchbacks or forced any opponent behind their own 20 yard line this season.

What can we do to solve the problem? 3 possible ideas.
1. DON’T BE AFRAID TO SCORE. I don’t know why but somehow, we just can’t score enough points. After we scored 28 points at the half, we were shutout during the third quarter. Yes, we did put up a good offensive performance overall, but we need to put the game away by continuously scoring. I’m not asking that Georgia should convert to the spread offense and rack up 100 points by halftime like Florida’s offense does, but we need to keep scoring to make up mistakes down the road (botched punt, interception, fumble). To extend this further, we have not scored a single touchdown in many times during the first half during the past three years. (Ex. Mississippi 06’, SC 07’, Florida 08’, Alabama 08’ to name a few). The offense has to find ways to move the ball, and I don’t care if we throw in trick plays or have an A11 offense for a play or two. We need to CONTINUOUSLY score points.

2. Have better DISCIPLINED defense. The defense has not been spectacular at all since I left UGA in 05. In fact, I didn’t think UGA’s defense in 05 was that superb even though we won an SEC championship. We have been digressing, not progressing, and it will cost us. Ole Willie has had good games defensively, but he can’t do it every single game like BVG did. The fact that we lost games during the 2001-2004 era was that we couldn’t score points, not that the defense played badly. Sadly, I predict Ole Willie to be the defensive coordinator next year. If we lose more than 5 games, he may as well be fired.

3. Play each game as if it matters. Look at Florida and Alabama right now! I hate to mention The “F” word and the “A” word on this blog but that is the way we should play football. Don’t put all the blame on Florida or Alabama when they hanged 49 points and 31 points at the half respectively on us this year. Don’t blame them when we couldn’t even score a frikkin’ touchdown against them. Give them all the credit in the world but Florida and Alabama was ready to play and they made the most out of our mistakes when we couldn’t execute properly or come up with a better scheme. You can’t argue with a Florida team that scores more than 46 points and only gives up an average of no more than 12 points a game or an Alabama team that will go undefeated at home this year and play in the SEC championship game. The difference between a championship caliber team and an average Joe is that one plays the game as if it means something or it is their last and the other team that plays just to get by and wipe their butts off. I would let you decide but what type of team is UGA’s this year?

It was a hard fought battle and GT beat us when we didn’t see it coming. We were too focused on trying to get to 11-2 and forgot how we should play sound football. In the end, there’s always a next time to make amends, but the next time may not be what we expect it to come out to.

nightmare

special teams, defense and discipline – keys to any team. Could the players have executed better, sure but when a game and season goes like this, it isn’t the players, it is the coaching. Defense wins games and special team plays can change momentum. We need to make some changes for next season. We will still have plenty of player talent.

hedges

I hope our athletic department has the cojones to demand that Tech pay to repair the hedges. Those classless douchebags left the field with clumps of it in their hands.

Thanks to everyone who participated today

I was at the game, so I couldn’t take part, but I thank you all for joining in the comment thread.

Because of the way the game went, I was worried matters would get out of hand here, but I underestimated what is becoming one of the finest communities in the blogosphere and I should have known everyone would keep it civil and reasonable.

Yes, there was some venting, but every bit of it was justified and none of it crossed (or came close to) any lines.

Good job, everyone. Thanks again, and go ’Dawgs!

Well, great offensive game by both teams, at any rate

It was, however, an extremely exciting spectator game and one I am glad I attended, despite the truly miserable weather and the truly miserable outcome.

As we in Bulldog Nation learned during the Eric Zeier era, there’s nothing more exciting than a team with a very good offense and a very bad defense.

We also learned that excitement is overrated. Vince Dooley football was dull because it was predictable: run, stop the run, and win, week after week after week.
