Georgia Bulldogs v. Auburn Tigers Game Day Open Comment Thread

Georgia Bulldogs at Auburn Tigers, Nov 15, 2008 12:30 PM EST

In light of the number of comments to have appeared at Dawg Sports over the course of the last few days, I don’t think I have to tell you that your reactions, reflections, responses, and ruminations to this afternoon’s renewal of the Deep South’s oldest football rivalry go in the comments below. Please play nicely and keep it clean.

I will also take this opportunity to identify the Dawg Sports honorary game day captain for today’s contest on the Plains. I have selected Jimmy Campagna, whose 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against Auburn in 1952 sparked a 13-7 Georgia victory over the Tigers in Columbus and tied Lamar Davis’s school record return against Tulane in 1940. (Lindsay Scott and Thomas Brown later eclipsed that mark in 1978 and 2006, respectively.)

Go ‘Dawgs! Auburna delenda est!

What are these large number of comments of which you speak? I haven’t seen anything out of the ordinary this week…

A simple request:

1) Please keep it clean
2) Dawg Fans: Please be postive
3) If you dont like a scheme or call, that’s ok, but, please, no blame gaming or “fire xxx” or Coach XXX is an idiot (see note 2).
4) Add insight, color and your thoughts, not blame, hate, or worry for next week or the bowl or next year.
5) If trolls show up – do not respond to them. It is pointless.
6) Let’s enjoy this one today. )

Thanks, tankertoad

We’ve all gotten to vent our spleen in the SG Standard FanPost comment thread, most especially including me.

Let’s make this one about what’s good about being a Georgia Bulldog.

Go 'Dawgs!

Did anyone notice in the pregame...

…that RayCom finally realized AJ Green is not AJ Bryant?

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DAWGS!!

Heck yes

I’d be okay with turning around and handing it off 40 times if we’re going to block like that.

It’s all good when you’ve AJ Bryant/Green.

Well

That result was just “bleeping” great

So, AD

Now the question is “HOW WILL WE RESPOND TO ADVERSTITY/FAILURE?” are we just going to fold now – or step up?

by tankertoad on Nov 15, 2008 12:44 PM EST up reply actions

Time to man up

Big time series on defense, will set the tempo for the rest of the game.

http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/

by AuditDawg on Nov 15, 2008 12:45 PM EST up reply actions

Well, I vented a lot about Special Teams

and how you couldn’t judge the defense this year with bad ST play, and my stance is the same now.

by tankertoad on Nov 15, 2008 12:44 PM EST reply actions

What was that?

The wind’s a factor. The field goal kicking has left a lot to be desired recently. You have third down on the three. Run it up the middle and, at worst, set up a makeable fourth down.

The play calling was good up until the third down call. The pass was a mistake. Power football. Man up.

Go 'Dawgs!

by T Kyle King on Nov 15, 2008 12:45 PM EST reply actions

"a lot to be desired"

is a very delicate and tacful word choice.

And yes – Knowshown x 2 would have been nice. He can go over the top from the 2, we have seen that.

by tankertoad on Nov 15, 2008 12:47 PM EST up reply actions

Father Dawg, the whistle blew

With our penchant for untimely personal foul penalties, they just let him go. Shows how informed the Auburn crowd is.

http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/

by AuditDawg on Nov 15, 2008 12:49 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly

They stopped at the whistle, like they’re supposed to do.

Go 'Dawgs!

by T Kyle King on Nov 15, 2008 12:50 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not anti that fade

Green still came down with the ball, but got forced out. I guess seeing Knowshon more would have been nice, but Stafford and Green have made plays all year. I can’t fault him for that call.

http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/

by AuditDawg on Nov 15, 2008 12:50 PM EST up reply actions

Why did we send Blair Walsh in there just then? Did any Dawg fan NOT see that one coming? Moving the ball at will, and we do that? Agh!

by Father Dawg on Nov 15, 2008 12:45 PM EST reply actions

That wasn't the line's fault

That was blocked like a yard behind the line of scrimmage. Walsh didn’t get the ball up. You have to believe his pysche is hanging by a thin thread right now.

Yeah . . .

. . . he called a great series with, at most, one arguable call, and, although I disagreed with it, AuditDawg makes a good point that there was an argument for it.

Go 'Dawgs!

by T Kyle King on Nov 15, 2008 12:54 PM EST up reply actions

the thing is, we arent in the staff meetings

and we dont know what was called versus what Stafford does. But the run x2 made more sense to me.

by tankertoad on Nov 15, 2008 12:55 PM EST up reply actions

The ball's inside the GA 10-yard line after a special teams play

That sounds familiar. Only this time UGA has the football.

by AuditDawg on Nov 15, 2008 12:52 PM EST reply actions

Yeesh

We really need to hire a full time special teams coach. Why would Miller let that one bounce? He was right there.

by SG Standard on Nov 15, 2008 12:52 PM EST reply actions

there are changes a coming -

but unlike UT – we will quitely adjust this spring, but it’s coming

by tankertoad on Nov 15, 2008 12:53 PM EST up reply actions

Pretty good defensive series

Let’s see if we can move the ball this time.

Go 'Dawgs!

by T Kyle King on Nov 15, 2008 12:52 PM EST reply actions

By which I mean . . .

. . . continue to move the ball this time, like last time.

Go 'Dawgs!

by T Kyle King on Nov 15, 2008 12:53 PM EST up reply actions

So, an "interesting" choice of going for the FG with 3 yards to go and a pass and FG

has resulted in Auburn flipping the field.

T Kyle is the statisician, but I am CONVINCED, field positioning is a huge weakness this year.

Do we need to just work on scoring on big plays outside of the red zone?

I don’t remember us doing it as much this year as last year. It would certainly help us score without worrying about getting in the red zone.

But that’s part of football to an extent. It happens everytime to try and get in the other player’s head, but it went on longer than normal there. Normally, that’s called.

I feel bad for the Defense. We are ALWAYS leanign on them. We missed a TD/FG chance. We have had teh worst quarter of Specials Teams ever. Please give them a break.

by tankertoad on Nov 15, 2008 1:09 PM EST reply actions

At least they didn't get the extra point

That’s small consolation, but you can’t give an S.E.C. team those kinds of opportunities.

Auburn is too well coached not to capitalize.

Go 'Dawgs!

by T Kyle King on Nov 15, 2008 1:09 PM EST reply actions

Kyle, you hit the nail on the head

Our two losses this year have been that special teams and offense made too many mistakes and everytime the opposing team capitalized.

This is what I've been saying

Self Quote -

“The defense barely makes it to the bench before they have to turn around and go back out”. How can you control the ball, the clock, the field so poorly and place it all around the neck of the Defense?

by Pascagoula St. on Nov 15, 2008 1:11 PM EST reply actions

I wonder

I would love to know how the musical chairs at PR and split reps that must have come from that have affected our ability to make the right play on punts. Not like that explains the roughing penalty, but still.

by SG Standard on Nov 15, 2008 1:11 PM EST reply actions

Honestly i'm looking to next year RFr. Carlton Thomas

I’m hoping he will be able to take control of the return duties, he is a small shifty and fast scat back, who did a ton of returning kicks in highschool

by Southern Dawg on Nov 15, 2008 1:14 PM EST up reply actions

Heres the thing

If they decide that he is the man, they need to give him all the reps from spring practice on. Miller and Gray, and maybe even Knowshon, have been splitting time there. That leads to uncecessary inexperience, which has translated to problems on the field.

by SG Standard on Nov 15, 2008 1:16 PM EST up reply actions

from the stats

the only 2 AU players who are doing anything are Burns and Fannin. It seems that would be where you would focus your efforts.

I know he has all the talent in the world, but he is yet to prove to me that he can use them to effectively play QB for more than just short spurts. I know he is going to have all the money a person can dream of thrown at him, but he would really be better served long term by staying.

by AuditDawg on Nov 15, 2008 1:35 PM EST reply actions

I dont know if he will go pro or not

but if he stays, I hope he has a serious sit down heart to heart with some good friends, his mom and dad, and maybe CMR and realize he needs to be committed to the team, the school, and the moment at hand, and realize this isn’t Texas where he was god-like. He is a fine and good young man, but he needs to prioritize what he wants and where his heart is.

Thats the problem

At the UF game, the halftime mindset was “Oh crap, here we go again.” They just convinced themselves that we were screwed. I was thinking the same way, but was in the stands and I’m allowed to think like that. They need to realize that they should be dominating this game, come back out, and do something about it.

I think it's all of the above. And you're right, those are very important

factors but they don’t force personal fouls and 3rd and short redzone fades. There seems to be so many factors week to week that it will take an entire offseason to address them effectively. I just hope that the same people that were around when this started will be able to change the mindset because we know it will still be the same coaches next year. At the very least, the coaching staff is part of the problem but they won’t be CMR’s solution so what will it be? What do you do to change this?

by VDawg on Nov 15, 2008 2:08 PM EST up reply actions

The biggest thing to me...

…is the lack of senior leaders. The players have made that painfully clear in the last few weeks that no one has really stepped up. Next year the team will be a little older and hopefully someone on the defensive side of the ball will step into that Kelin Johnson role.

on that long ball and said, “We’re talented, but I just don’t think this team is that good”.

I know that’s probably a shared sentiment and it’s dreadfully obvious at times, but we just don’t seem to click. Our talent has won us a lot of games, but it was the missing “team” aspect that cost us the others. If we just out-talent our opponents in these next two and a half games and go to the house 11-2, I’ll be happy.

Regroup, and come out as a team next fall.

I think a lot of coaches are loathe to challenge a play, since every play is allegedly reviewed in the booth. Their line of thinking is probably “If they got it wrong, the booth will review it and I don’t have to risk a timeout.” I, however, really doubt that each call gets reviewed.

the ball, yet so bad in the redzone? There can’t be anyone on the planet that expects them to score once they get down there.

2001 UGA

I’m talking about late in the season when Greene starting to understand the offense and Verron Haynes had moved to HB. I think they had about 9 redzone possessions and settled for 6 Billy Bennett FGs.

So twice inside the 10 yard line...

… and only three points to show for it. I’m with you VDawg, this might be one of the worst red zone teams in college football history.

except the stats dont reflect that

it’s the timing of our Red Zone – mixed with bad Special Teams, Ints, PFs

That was the most blatant block in the back...

…I’ve ever seen. I’m glad they finally called it.

What a play by Prince Miller

Burns made a good throw, and Miller wrapped him up as soon as he caught it.

Yeah, that's a problem with GamePlan

My roommates and I got GamePlan and all the games are in regular definition on Comcast. What a waste of $$$.

Did any of you guys see the Ohio State/Northwestern game last week?

If I were Pat Fitzgerald, head coach of Northwestern, I would have punched Tressel in the face during the post-game handshake. OSU went for a fake punt while up significantly in the 4th Quarter and then punched in a TD in the final seconds to win big.

Tressel's a $%$^

But he has a NC to show for it. I think there’s a pattern to this.

Yes

And that is why I could never be a football coach. I would have given him a straight shot right to the babymaker.

My goodness...

….Dave Baker is still talking about how banged up Auburn is with no mention of UGA’s injury woes. Thank you Daves for leaving the air next year. You won’t be missed.

I think our guys got back too

They got out of the neutral zone before the snap. Granted, it didnt’ matter, but I still see your point.
