Georgia Bulldogs v. Auburn Tigers Game Day Open Comment Thread
Georgia Bulldogs at Auburn Tigers, Nov 15, 2008 12:30 PM EST
In light of the number of comments to have appeared at Dawg Sports over the course of the last few days, I don’t think I have to tell you that your reactions, reflections, responses, and ruminations to this afternoon’s renewal of the Deep South’s oldest football rivalry go in the comments below. Please play nicely and keep it clean.
I will also take this opportunity to identify the Dawg Sports honorary game day captain for today’s contest on the Plains. I have selected Jimmy Campagna, whose 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against Auburn in 1952 sparked a 13-7 Georgia victory over the Tigers in Columbus and tied Lamar Davis’s school record return against Tulane in 1940. (Lindsay Scott and Thomas Brown later eclipsed that mark in 1978 and 2006, respectively.)
Go ‘Dawgs! Auburna delenda est!

What are these large number of comments of which you speak? I haven’t seen anything out of the ordinary this week…
A simple request:
1) Please keep it clean
2) Dawg Fans: Please be postive
3) If you dont like a scheme or call, that’s ok, but, please, no blame gaming or “fire xxx” or Coach XXX is an idiot (see note 2).
4) Add insight, color and your thoughts, not blame, hate, or worry for next week or the bowl or next year.
5) If trolls show up – do not respond to them. It is pointless.
6) Let’s enjoy this one today. )
Thanks, tankertoad
We’ve all gotten to vent our spleen in the SG Standard FanPost comment thread, most especially including me.
Let’s make this one about what’s good about being a Georgia Bulldog.

Did anyone notice in the pregame...
…that RayCom finally realized AJ Green is not AJ Bryant?
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
So, AD
Now the question is “HOW WILL WE RESPOND TO ADVERSTITY/FAILURE?” are we just going to fold now – or step up?
Time to man up
Big time series on defense, will set the tempo for the rest of the game.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
Well, I vented a lot about Special Teams
and how you couldn’t judge the defense this year with bad ST play, and my stance is the same now.
What was that?
The wind’s a factor. The field goal kicking has left a lot to be desired recently. You have third down on the three. Run it up the middle and, at worst, set up a makeable fourth down.
The play calling was good up until the third down call. The pass was a mistake. Power football. Man up.
Go 'Dawgs!
"a lot to be desired"
is a very delicate and tacful word choice.
And yes – Knowshown x 2 would have been nice. He can go over the top from the 2, we have seen that.
Father Dawg, the whistle blew
With our penchant for untimely personal foul penalties, they just let him go. Shows how informed the Auburn crowd is.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
Exactly
They stopped at the whistle, like they’re supposed to do.

I'm not anti that fade
Green still came down with the ball, but got forced out. I guess seeing Knowshon more would have been nice, but Stafford and Green have made plays all year. I can’t fault him for that call.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
Why did we send Blair Walsh in there just then? Did any Dawg fan NOT see that one coming? Moving the ball at will, and we do that? Agh!
That wasn't the line's fault
That was blocked like a yard behind the line of scrimmage. Walsh didn’t get the ball up. You have to believe his pysche is hanging by a thin thread right now.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
Yeah . . .
. . . he called a great series with, at most, one arguable call, and, although I disagreed with it, AuditDawg makes a good point that there was an argument for it.

the thing is, we arent in the staff meetings
and we dont know what was called versus what Stafford does. But the run x2 made more sense to me.
The ball's inside the GA 10-yard line after a special teams play
That sounds familiar. Only this time UGA has the football.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
Yeesh
We really need to hire a full time special teams coach. Why would Miller let that one bounce? He was right there.
Interesting
Is this an informed guess, or just a wish?

HOWEVER
i am not saying they are huge/massive changes, just small adjustments here and there that likely wont be reported

So, an "interesting" choice of going for the FG with 3 yards to go and a pass and FG
has resulted in Auburn flipping the field.
T Kyle is the statisician, but I am CONVINCED, field positioning is a huge weakness this year.
Do we need to just work on scoring on big plays outside of the red zone?
I don’t remember us doing it as much this year as last year. It would certainly help us score without worrying about getting in the red zone.

What's with that cheap crap at the end of the play???
You see the Auburn lineman keep driving Moreno into the ground and holding him down?
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
Granted, my career only went through high school
But that’s part of football to an extent. It happens everytime to try and get in the other player’s head, but it went on longer than normal there. Normally, that’s called.

Thank you RayCom
They just showed the greatest moment I’ve ever experienced live at the 2002 Auburn game.

I do, however, maintain that after that catch, I jumped six feet in the air and bumped my head on the ceiling.
See, auburn goes long on 1st and 10, and then they have 2nd and ten and run
and now they are 3rd and long. SOUND FAMILIAR?
I'm glad we don't

Honestly -
I feel bad for the Defense. We are ALWAYS leanign on them. We missed a TD/FG chance. We have had teh worst quarter of Specials Teams ever. Please give them a break.
At least they didn't get the extra point
That’s small consolation, but you can’t give an S.E.C. team those kinds of opportunities.
Auburn is too well coached not to capitalize.
Go 'Dawgs!
Kyle, you hit the nail on the head
Our two losses this year have been that special teams and offense made too many mistakes and everytime the opposing team capitalized.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
This is what I've been saying
Our defense is like our court system . . . given all that we ask them to do, the wonder isn’t that they perform so poorly, it’s that they perform so well.
Go 'Dawgs!
Self Quote -
“The defense barely makes it to the bench before they have to turn around and go back out”. How can you control the ball, the clock, the field so poorly and place it all around the neck of the Defense?
I wonder
I would love to know how the musical chairs at PR and split reps that must have come from that have affected our ability to make the right play on punts. Not like that explains the roughing penalty, but still.
Honestly i'm looking to next year RFr. Carlton Thomas
I’m hoping he will be able to take control of the return duties, he is a small shifty and fast scat back, who did a ton of returning kicks in highschool

Heres the thing
If they decide that he is the man, they need to give him all the reps from spring practice on. Miller and Gray, and maybe even Knowshon, have been splitting time there. That leads to uncecessary inexperience, which has translated to problems on the field.
from the stats
the only 2 AU players who are doing anything are Burns and Fannin. It seems that would be where you would focus your efforts.
And what I wanted to say earlier...
does Bobo intend to use the entore season to prove that the corner fade works?
All right, guys
We’re outplaying them.

Yeah, it looked like Staff audibled in to it. I wonder if the bombs aren't his call instead of Bobo's...
since he seems to pick up something every play.
We can't know
Not all the calls come right from Stafford. He is undoubtedly told ahead of time to check into a certain play if AU is in a certain defense. With all the changing at the line that we do, its impossible to know exactly where the idea came from.
On lighter news
The Charlie Weis experiment at Nore Dame is tied 7-7 with Navy with 2 mins left in the 1st half. Firing Ty Willingham and giving Charlie Weis a lifetime contract after 7 games were two obviously brilliant moves.

Personally, I'm tired of defending him to Gator fans.
He has the tools but they don’t seem to fit in the screws.
To be honest, I've never really defended him
I know he has all the talent in the world, but he is yet to prove to me that he can use them to effectively play QB for more than just short spurts. I know he is going to have all the money a person can dream of thrown at him, but he would really be better served long term by staying.
I dont know if he will go pro or not
but if he stays, I hope he has a serious sit down heart to heart with some good friends, his mom and dad, and maybe CMR and realize he needs to be committed to the team, the school, and the moment at hand, and realize this isn’t Texas where he was god-like. He is a fine and good young man, but he needs to prioritize what he wants and where his heart is.
Well said... It's hard to characterize this team and this
game without being too negative. I sure as hell don’t know how to do it. If they weren’t so talented it would honestly be easier to take. It just shouldn’t be this bad. Someone mentioned it last week but maybe we would be better with a lower profile QB.

That “disaster” is 8-2, ranked tenth in the B.C.S. standings, and has the lead on the road in a rivalry game.

I don’t believe the season is a disaster by any means, but we need to quit looking for the mental breakdowns to stop at this point in the season. If it hasn’t changed by now, it won’t. This is the makeup of the team and we need to look for the best out of them understanding there are going to be some head-shaking penalties along the way.

This is a weird game

just like the first half of the Florida game
We are doing fine, we are in the game, we got them where we want them. I am postive, but it’s the Team’s mindset I am concerned about.
Thats the problem
At the UF game, the halftime mindset was “Oh crap, here we go again.” They just convinced themselves that we were screwed. I was thinking the same way, but was in the stands and I’m allowed to think like that. They need to realize that they should be dominating this game, come back out, and do something about it.
Precisely
Well said. Georgia has outplayed Auburn. The offense just needs to execute, the defense needs to keep doing what it’s doing but clean up the foolish penalties, and the special teams need to not make a complete hash of matters.

Don't underestimate . . .
. . . the power of (a) home field advantage, (b) playing for bowl eligibility, or © facing one of your biggest rivals after back-to-back losses to that rival.
Go 'Dawgs!
I think it's all of the above. And you're right, those are very important
factors but they don’t force personal fouls and 3rd and short redzone fades. There seems to be so many factors week to week that it will take an entire offseason to address them effectively. I just hope that the same people that were around when this started will be able to change the mindset because we know it will still be the same coaches next year. At the very least, the coaching staff is part of the problem but they won’t be CMR’s solution so what will it be? What do you do to change this?
The biggest thing to me...
…is the lack of senior leaders. The players have made that painfully clear in the last few weeks that no one has really stepped up. Next year the team will be a little older and hopefully someone on the defensive side of the ball will step into that Kelin Johnson role.

Our talent has won us a lot of games, but it was the missing “team” aspect that cost us the others. If we just out-talent our opponents in these next two and a half games and go to the house 11-2, I’ll be happy.

Stafford made a bad read on the play. Its not always the coordinators fault. Unless its our defense. Then I will always blame the coordinator.
Auburn has 6 points - and our D has had like 5 PFs
I don’t think we have to point at the Defensive Coach.
What's the point in watching this mess??
All they do is move the ball down the field and fall flat on their faces!!!
Let's not...
…get all fair-weathered. Got to take the good with the bad, man. No matter how disproportionate that is this year.

WOW Rennie Curran is worth watching the rest of this game!
Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win.

Prince Miller
Actually wrapped up and made a tackle! That was a good job reading the screen.

Why didn't they review that,
Or why didn’t Richt challenge the call in such a close game?

It was a forward progress call
That whistle blows the play dead there. It’s not reviewable, same as being tackled.

oh man
well that sucks! would have been a big boost!

My theory
I think a lot of coaches are loathe to challenge a play, since every play is allegedly reviewed in the booth. Their line of thinking is probably “If they got it wrong, the booth will review it and I don’t have to risk a timeout.” I, however, really doubt that each call gets reviewed.
In that case, though, the play ends with a whistle. You can’t reveiw a quick whistle.
Now can you see why CMR defends Willie?
Is it crazy Stafford and Special teams, et all, or just Willie?
Keep in mind...
Where playing against an Auburn offense that has been anemic all season, and I’m being kind with that description.

fair point
but 1st and bombs, PFs, and STs are KILLING US. How can you ever figure out that Willie’s schemes are the #1 problem with all that?
Cause they have been for years
It’s not a new development that teams with a functional passing game can pick us apart.
The Daves just refuse to get these anything right
Apparently Logan Gray is still a true freshman. Don’t most TV teams have someone that researches for the color guys?

Yes

The Dave on the sideline thinks we challenged it. These are the most inept announcers of all time.

Sorry
Let me try and help-baseball season is over and that scourge is out of our lives for months.
Or you could, you know, drink heavily. That helps with the buzziness.
If we expand beyond just football...
…I’d have to nominate Tim McCarver and Joe Buck’s baseball coverage. Greatest example: Few years ago during Yankees/ Bo Sox game, the Yankees pinch hit for Giambi. McCarver says “this is clearly a defensive move by the Yankees for the later innings of the game.” Buck follows up with “the Yanks are pinch hitting for the DH, Giambi”. Just classic.

Tim McCarver and Joe Buck
I knew I had that name wrong. I guess I have combined them into one massive thing of annoyance and stupidity.
The Daves are wrong?
That never happens.

To the historians: Has a team ever been so good at moving
the ball, yet so bad in the redzone? There can’t be anyone on the planet that expects them to score once they get down there.
2001 UGA
I’m talking about late in the season when Greene starting to understand the offense and Verron Haynes had moved to HB. I think they had about 9 redzone possessions and settled for 6 Billy Bennett FGs.

So twice inside the 10 yard line...
… and only three points to show for it. I’m with you VDawg, this might be one of the worst red zone teams in college football history.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
except the stats dont reflect that
it’s the timing of our Red Zone – mixed with bad Special Teams, Ints, PFs
That was the most blatant block in the back...
…I’ve ever seen. I’m glad they finally called it.

Wow
Baker just tried to describe the timeout/review thing and still couldnt get it right. Its getting hard to believe at this point.
What a play by Prince Miller
Burns made a good throw, and Miller wrapped him up as soon as he caught it.

Yeah, that's a problem with GamePlan
My roommates and I got GamePlan and all the games are in regular definition on Comcast. What a waste of $$$.

Did any of you guys see the Ohio State/Northwestern game last week?
If I were Pat Fitzgerald, head coach of Northwestern, I would have punched Tressel in the face during the post-game handshake. OSU went for a fake punt while up significantly in the 4th Quarter and then punched in a TD in the final seconds to win big.
http://hobnailboot.blogspot.com/
Tressel's a $%$^
But he has a NC to show for it. I think there’s a pattern to this.

And that is why I could never be a football coach. I would have given him a straight shot right to the babymaker.
My goodness...
….Dave Baker is still talking about how banged up Auburn is with no mention of UGA’s injury woes. Thank you Daves for leaving the air next year. You won’t be missed.
