Georgia Bulldogs v. Florida Gators Game Day Open Comment Thread

Florida Gators at Georgia Bulldogs, Nov 1, 2008 3:30 PM EDT

You know the drill (as in "finish the . . ."): this is your game day open comment thread and your reactions, reflections, outbursts, and observations are welcome and invited below. I have family in town for the afternoon, so I won’t be participating, but I trust the usual suspects will be on hand to keep the conversation lively.

This is also the time at which we announce the Dawg Sports honorary game day captain. Let’s not complicate this unnecessarily:

That’s one No. 24 leading Georgia to the victory over Florida that propelled the Bulldogs to conference and national championships. Here’s hoping another No. 24 delivers a repeat performance in Jacksonville later this afternoon.

Go ’Dawgs!

Prior to the game...

I’d like to point out that MaconDawg’s “Rum! Knowshon! Rum!’s” are absolutely delicious. Good god the man can select a fine cocktail.

Game predictions:
1) Florida celebrates after the first score by pulling off tear-away football pants to reveal designer jorts.

2) Georgia wins 31-27 on a field goal toward the end of the 4th quarter.

3) Tim Tebow curls up on the fifty yard line and cries after the game. He comforts himself by clutching a miniature Albert the Gator stuffed with Filipino foreskins.

I hate...

Raycom and living in Mississippi. Thank god I can actually get this game online until the local affiliate decides to switch over once they show about 15 minutes of commercials. Don’t even ask how many times I’ve left drunken profanity laced voicemails at that station on Saturdays around 2:30 local time.

Not perfect, but it beats getting my dad to hoold the telephone up to his tv that is smart enough to switch over to the good game anyone cares about.

LETS STOP GETTING CUTE!!!!!!!!!

Why are we trying to play cute with all these special plays, lets just do what we do best and hit them in the mouth. Now we miss the kick and ruin a great drive. I hope Bobo is learning from this drive. Simplely hand the ball to Moreno and use the play-action pass work for you to make big plays. That’s SEC football. Cute playcalling is doine by teams that aren’t that good and can’t out-play the other team. But i think we can outplay this team.

I'm not sure if it was a designed run play

but there was a lot of misdirection stuff and it let linemann in the backfield get to him. It seemed to be a sort of rolling out for a pass to draw defenders towards him or something, i’m not sure, either way it was a broken play.

Again - we need to score and get 14-10. We make great second half adjustments.

We can’t stop Florida 3rd and short, so we need to ensure they are 3rd and 4+. The PFs need to end for the rest of the game. Stafford needs a little more protection and we need to turn him lose with the pass game. The TE/FB pass is there when needed. Toss sweep to Moreno needs to be revisted. Need Moreno losend up a little to get the play action going.

Let's spin this around to the postive:

We got them exactly where we want them. Let’s get in their head now and out play them. Anyone think we would be up by 20 at the half? NO, of course not. We missed two FGs, we had a PF that costs us an INT, and we had the onside kick failure. Florida right now is thinking “man, we are lucky”. We need to come out and play.

I see we got a wider range of weapons and athletes, we just got to believe

and not make silly mistakes. CMR showed this in his interview “we are statisically even”. We stop them, get a TD, it’s 14-10 halway through the third. That is a game we can win. CMR makes the best second half adjustments of any Coach/team I routinely watch. Right now he isn’t worried about this play or that play, he is trying to settle his team and build trust and espirit de corps.

Alabama was a bad analogy...

We just look like we are coaching and playing scared….we stopped them once in the first half and put our D in an untenable situation with that stupid onsides kick.

Yea, Walsh is just a hair from that place where he won't make practive FGs with no line

It is hard as heck to put that behind you – think of it like golf. Two bad drives and you are like “crap, i cant do anything right.” I hope he can put it behind him.

by tankertoad on Nov 1, 2008 5:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Re: Alabama

I honestly thought we could come back and win from a 31-0 deficit to Alabama. We didn’t.

I’m less sanguine about our chances down 14-3 to Florida. I can only pray my gut is as wrong as it was last time.

Otherwise…this is in no way anything like the Bama game. We got steamrolled that time. Yeah, PF’s hurt us. But we’d still be down by at least 21 at the half.

Now? We’re down 11 at the half, with a handful of miscues seperating us from a single-score game or even a lead.

So I find myself in the odd circumstance that my head is more confident about our chances than my heart is.

Looking at the cocktail glass as half-full at this point; I mean, at least the SEC still has defense, right? I was having visions of a triple digit total score at this point….

by wwcmrd? on Nov 1, 2008 5:17 PM EDT reply actions

There are 3 reasons we are losing:

1) REFS
2) BAD BREAKS
3) Coaching

In that order. UF should never have scored that first TD. It should have been a punt if not for Ms. Meyer (Penn Wagers).

Agreed

They flat-out spotted them the 1st TD. I was yelling so much during that drive that I’m lucky the neighbors didn’t call the law on me (especially considering that one of them is a Gator fan).

I think we can turn it around, though…

by papadawg on Nov 1, 2008 5:20 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree to a point...

1) Penn Wagers is the worst ref in the SEC bar none, but the shoot yourself in the foot penalties that kept their drives alive were legit. It was poor execution by our D.
2) This is the truth….we can’t buy a break today.
3) Yep, nuff said on that one.

by RocketDawg on Nov 1, 2008 5:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah...they do

As bad breaks.

My point is our guys aren’t playing poorly and our coaches aren’t coaching that badly. We have had things not go our way so far. It isn’t like we’re being outclassed on the field like we were at Alabama.

I sincerely hope the coaches and players are more upbeat

than these boards are today. This isnt Ray Goff vs Steve Spurrier. UGA has one of the finest head coaches in college football, and I am convinced we have a wider range of weapons than Florida.

This is a two possession game. We make great adjustments. This is about poise, leadership and execution.

Lucky T-Shirt

Alright, folks. I’m breaking out my lucky T-shirt for the 2nd half. It currently holds a 25-7 record in games when I’m wearing it. It actually started out 0-3 in the 90’s, but is 25-4 since Richt took over. If you’re wondering why I wouldn’t be wearing it to start the game… it’s a Ga/Fla T-shirt and doesn’t have a history of success against them. But, today, I feel like it is needed. If you’re asking yourself, is this guy crazy?, then yes. I am.
I’m also dead serious.
The T-shirt will make a difference.

What else we got, a ticky-tacky call on the Prince Miller interception. That call CAN be made, but most good refs are gonna let that go, it didn’t affect the play at all and it was a game changing play nullified by a stupid call.

But at this point I think we as fans are not satisfied with top ten finishes only. This team could have been incredible. Instead they are happy to play themselves out of any type of elite consideration. Stafford pick. I could not be more disappointed in the play of our guys, the quality of coaching we’ve exhibited, etc. This team is destined for a Capital One berth and it might be thirty more years before this team can win a MNC. Why can’t we take charge when we are in the driver’s seat. And why do we have to lose in such an embarassing fashion. I don’t care if we go 11-2 this year, each loss we’ve had seems like 3. by The ArchDawg on Nov 1, 2008 8:38 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't understand.....

what is wrong with our coaches and players.

Do we really NEED a stupid TD celebration and black shirts to play our best football? Why is it that we can’t seem to get motivated for big games by the sheer fact that it is a BIG GAME?

Last year at Tennessee is a prime example….in ‘06 they HOUSED us, yet we didn’t even get off the bus at Neyland last year. Wouldn’t someone whipping your tail in your own house motivate you to go out and play your very best against them next time?

I really thought that the MOJO of this series had changed after last year, but apparently it hasn’t. I was accused earlier of being to negative, but I tell you kids this had the look and the smell of a Goff v Spurrier @ss whipping from yesteryear.

What do you think the problem is with our guys? Is Coach Richt TOO laid back? I have already heard the “Fire Willie Martinez” chant, but honestly I didn’t think our defensive gameplan was that bad. Bobo had some absolutely MORONIC play calls, especially in the Red Zone. Our kids basically didn’t execute, we came in and played tight just like we used to when we expected to lose this game.

I for one have had enough, there needs to be a mandate to our staff and team that we will play and beat Florida on a regular basis.

Thoughts?

by RocketDawg on Nov 1, 2008 8:24 PM EDT reply actions

With Richt’s numbers, and continuing, I won’t blame him. He’s easily on track to break most coaching records at UGA (see T. Kyle’s win watch…which painfully won’t be updated this week.) Not only that, but I’d rather have a coach with CMR’s values than what a “win and gone” champ brings and leaves behind like others in college ball. If there is any sideline blame to CMR, perhaps it’s his supervising of the coordinators. I’ve never been a fan of Bobo, but at the same time, I was pleading for Richt to drop playcalling job and hand it off to a full O-coordinator. I get what I ask for, huh.

At the same time, Bobo could become a sought-after coordinator like Muschamp, Fisher, or Pelini….with time and practice. Or, he could be the next sought after coach that Tuberville is looking for….how’s that worked out?

As far as Matinez, I’m not as nearly down on him as most others. He may not come out to hit, but he seems to keep the offense in the game about 90% of the time, which is the most I think you can ask for in such a powerful conference. Does that put the blame back on the O? Beat’s the hell out of me. If I knew all th answers, I’d be a coach and not some lawyer deep deep deep in the hole on student loans.

by Pascagoula St. on Nov 1, 2008 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think motivation was an issue

We just ran into a buzzsaw that is the Florida Gators. They didn’t make a mistake today and we did. It’s one of those things where everything that goes wrong for one side went right for the other and we were on the wrong side of it.

by AuditDawg on Nov 1, 2008 8:51 PM EDT up reply actions

You make some good points.

There is something wrong with the way we prepare for games. I’m not privy to all of the information—maybe Richt is too calm, whatever—but it is incumbent upon those who are—the coaches—to rectify the situation. I’m not calling for any firings or anything drastic like that. But when one sits back and evaluates what is before them in regards to our team, esp. in losses, several things jump out, as has been discussed on this thread throughout: our flat-footed play, questionable offense play-calling, and I hate to say this, but a lack of ‘fire’.

I do believe (right now) that the defensive gameplan was pretty sound. Offensively: different story. What gets to me the most, though, is how we are losing. The difference between this, Alabama, or Tennessee last year compared to, say, Auburn in ‘05 is that I feel we played our butts off and just came short. I can accept that. And maybe we really are 39 points worse than Florida, and 3 touchdowns worse than ’Bama—but when the above-mentioned symptoms continue to show up in these losses (and I see the ability of which we are able to perform throughout the season) I cannot feel that, you know? I’m not saying we give up—certainly didn’t in the ‘Bama game, now—but there’s a certain fire, an instinct, that I sense missing in these losses that I’m not so comfortable with.

Well, our goals have certainly changed, but we can still make something of this season and prepare for the future.

by The ArchDawg on Nov 1, 2008 8:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Goals change

and I hope I’m still within driving distance of last year’s Sugar Bowl. I have enough fam in Dallas now….I think could take a Cotton Bowl drive! And I will love it! Go Dawgs!

by Pascagoula St. on Nov 1, 2008 9:04 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm with you there

I graduated from UGA in 2007 with my Masters in Accounting so I was in Athens from 2002-2007. The biggest change I noticed was the way we lost games. In 2002-2004 we lost games that were close and tough fought games. But from 2005-present, we’ve had our asses handed to us more than a handful of times. I will not make excuses. I do think this is directly related to Willie Martinez. I will agree that he’s not had the luxury of first day draft picks at DL, but it’s not like Georgia is lacking in the talent department. I think in the end, someone’s got to be accountable, and I feel that Willie may be the unfortunate one that is to blame. I don’t really think he’s a bad coach, but he’s been in charge for most of these embarassing losses and that’s got to count for something.

Maybe motivation is the wrong word....

but there is something that is certainly wrong with our BIG GAME preparation. Granted we are a young team and young teams tend to make mistakes at the most inopportune times, but it seems like everytime the chips are down we crap the bed. Don’t get me wrong I am a huge Coach Richt fan and there isn’t another coach in the country (much less the SEC) that I would rather have. That all being said, I just get tired of not being able to “win the big one”.

For example:

2002-Lose to UF with a MUCH more talented team
2003-Lose to LSU (where our money kicker missed 3 FG’s), lose to UF AGAIN with a much more talented team, get HOUSED by LSU in the SECCG.
2004-Choke and lose to a UT team with a true freshman QB AT HOME, get the crap beat out of us at Auburn (although I think that they were the better team that year)
2005-the two regular season losses were 1) because DJ was hurt for UF (otherwise we win that one) and Auburn (one of the best games I have ever been to personally), WVU housing in the Sugar Bowl (I blame that on the coaches not having us prepared)
2006-UT at home (the defense should have at least kept it close)
2007-UT away (no excuse for this loss, UT sucked last year)
2008- Alabama (do I need to rehash this?) and today against UF.

For whatever reason we seem utterly incapable of playing a big game close, much less win one.

The key word...

… there is preparation. We come out flat for these big games and get so far behind that we’re scrambling to catch up. I’ve already burned the shirts I wore for Bama and Florida today so I’m making sure that my karma is not part of the problem.

What scares me so much about your comment (and others)

is that UA and UF aren’t exactly loaded with seniors, either. Or AU, LSU, or TN. Awwww….now I’m just depressing myself.

Sadly

I agree with Urban Meyer when he says Tebow is a once in a generation player. That’s very true. Once Tebow’s gone I can see Florida slipping, but maybe’s that’s wishful thinking on my part.

I think that is wishful thinking....

Tebow is a special player, but look at Pat White, Alex Smith, etc. You only have to be a fast and good QB to make that offense go, especially with all that speed around you.

by RocketDawg on Nov 1, 2008 9:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, Tebow's got help this year.

There are some good players on that offense. But the key for them this year is their defense, which has been causing turnovers at a high clip. This is much like their 2006 team, except that their offense converts touchdowns instead of field goals.

The funny thing is....

Unless we get dropped to the mid teens we could win out and still make the BCS as an at large (although I think that might be stretching it a bit)

by RocketDawg on Nov 1, 2008 9:05 PM EDT reply actions

Well,

considering that every league besides the Big XII is down this year, and assuming that ’Bama and UF are in the SEC championship game (and we win out), then yeah we can get an at-large b/c the SEC and the Big XII are the only leagues that deserve at-large bids

Yeah

I wonder how long it’s going to take Terrence Moore to put up a post about why Georgia lost because of the celebration last year.

I can't believe...

that guy hasn’t been run out of town on a rail by now. I can’t stand him , and what’s more is he can’t write worth a damn.

But..

he can appear on Jim Rome and make so much money…

Talk about your douchebags.......

1) Jim Rome
2) Terrence Moore
3) Urban Meyer

Great....pour in the salt...

UF/AU vs. USC starting to brew. Thank you Big 12. Take me back to last year…can’t someone just win to make the pain stop???

by Pascagoula St. on Nov 1, 2008 10:05 PM EDT reply actions

Yup

Currently, Texas is getting beat by Texas Tech 22-6, so there could be a huge BCS issue this weekend.

Please...

Just keep PAC 1+9, ACC, and Big East out. I can deal with Penn St. Who hates Joe Pa?
