The time has arrived for the most pleasant posting of the week; namely, the updating of the Mark Richt Victory Watch, in which we count down each successive win en route to Coach Richt’s eventual overtaking of Vince Dooley atop the all-time school victories list.
The Mark Richt Victory Watch now stands at 78. Coach Richt needs only 123 more wins to tie Coach Dooley for first place in the standings.
Coach Richt’s overall record improved to 78-20 with this afternoon’s hard-fought homecoming win over a ranked conference opponent, giving him the best mark ever for a Georgia coach after 98 games. Harry Mehre (58-34-6), Wally Butts (70-25-3), and Vince Dooley (66-28-4) all trailed Mark Richt after the same number of games.
Next Saturday, Coach Richt will lead the Bulldogs into battle for the 99th time, which will tie him with Coach Mehre for the third-most career games coached by a Red and Black head honcho. When Coach Richt puts his 100th game as Georgia’s head coach under his belt two weeks hence, he will join a rare company occupied only by the two winningest coaches in Bulldog history.
