The Mark Richt Victory Watch

Stay connected for news and updates

It is time once again for the Mark Richt Victory Watch, in which I count down each successive victory on Coach Richt's steady march to surpassing Vince Dooley as the winningest coach in Georgia football history.

Following this evening's 18-0 victory over the Gamecocks in Columbia, Coach Richt's victory tally now stands at 54. He needs 147 more wins to tie Coach Dooley.

At 54-13, Coach Richt has the best record of any Bulldog head coach through his first 67 games at the helm. At the same point in their respective careers, W.A. Cunningham (43-17-7), Harry Mehre (41-23-3), Wally Butts (46-19-2), Vince Dooley (44-19-4), and Ray Goff (39-28) all trailed Mark Richt.

To what extent does Georgia's 2-0 start this season bode well for Coach Richt's chances for advancing higher on the school career victories list in 2006?

This was the 11th occasion on which the 'Dawgs held the 'Cocks scoreless. In the previous 10 such seasons (1894, 1900, 1911, 1919, 1920, 1924, 1966, 1967, 1971, and 1981), Georgia won three conference championships and finished with two or fewer losses seven times.

Go 'Dawgs!
